I've done a lot of reading on the baiji, just wrote a paper on the Yangtze, and journal articles are filled with Chinese researchers who want to save the Yangtze ecosystem and all of its inhabitants. Yes, China as a whole has ecological problems, but it's the same in many countries, sadly. At least China has some sort of limit on its reproductive growth, something I admire. U.S. people just want to say "I'MMA HAVE MY BABIES, TAKE YOUR COMMIE SHIT ELSEWHERE." Sophisticated...sure.

When I was a kid in the '90s I had this book called "Creatures in Crisis" that taught kids all about the beauty of various animals (this one among them) that were, at the time, endangered. I am heartbroken to see now that they're gone; I feel like I lost a friend.
Let this be a lesson to man: Both people AND animals are precious to the Creator that made them, and in the eyes of the divine, we are all the same. May humans' arrogance be humbled before it's too late.
All these comments attributing this tragedy to the nation it occured in are missing the point. It really isn't about race; it's simply that mankind feels it is more important than any other creature, and therefore turning this poor dolphin's habitat into a toxic waste facility was considered too important to 'development' to reverse. What's with all the racism? The dolphins only lived in a single river, in the middle of one of the most thickly-populated human areas on Earth. @lumaix "Functionally extinct" is wishful thinking.There have been none seen in since 2007, and as an animal thats always hanging about at the water surface, thats pretty much a sign its gone. Its very very likely, that last one seen in 2007 has now passed on.

I think it's funny when westerners complain about China creating extinction for these animals. Westerners have caused more animals to be extinct then anyone else! It's the problem with industrialization. Westerners NOW have a foothold on the economy and can NOW afford to accommodate animals. But that wasn't so in the old days. But no one was crying about then were they? China contains about 5% of the extinct animals in the world. The rest? Well you figure it out. It's not hard.

From the very start, it was very hard for China to save it. At the highest population when nothing had been done to it, there aere around 6000, that would've been considered threatened or endangered already for other animals.
If the Baiji went extinct due to the shifting of land masses, an opening to saltwater areas, or overeating its own food supplies then its plight would have been more understandable. But dying from manmade industrial pollution isn't something I consider a tenet of natural selection. It pretty much died a meaningless unnecessary death.
And nobody rant about natural selection, jeez, it's called pollution and overhunting and (yes, again) human stupidity. So what we invented the tv? We do this to all our species of animals, were dead no matter what.

Baiji are extinct now, but their time is done. Its called natural selection and those animals that can't adapt quick enought to survive are bound to die. I'm pretty sure Chinese Biologists and others already foresaw this and put little or no effort to save the dolphins- which is acceptable if you calculate costs and the problems the Chinese would face to conserve 1 species on river dolphin.

Chinese can't do anything.. We have sooo little information on the Chinese River Dolphin. They can't just go in and rescue the Baiji. They need the boats to travel through the river- its called economy. The river dolphin just are curious towards noise and more toward boats. If you don't know, Baiji evolved about 25 million years ago by dolphins and they developed small eyes, but an excellent sense of hearing and echolocation. Their eyes are small (Like chinese :D) so they can't see boats.

While we may see dolphins or tigers as beautiful creatures, many Asians may see them as food or as a source of folk medicine. I've seen documentaries showing Cambodian resturants serving bear paw soup. They had several live animals caged or chained outside the kitchen. When someone ordered the soup, they would cut off the paw of a LIVE sun bear (an endangered species), cauterize the wound, and leave the animal agonizing in pain until someone ordered more soup. Of course, not all Asians condone this, but their society is very different from ours.

A recent fad in Thailand is drinking venemous snake blood greatly reducing the number of snakes and increasing the number of rats.
This species was dying out due mainly to the pollution within the Yangtze river. Most of the waste from nearby cities is or was dumped into this river. The result was a decrease in fecundity for this species.

@lumaix "Functionally extinct" is wishful thinking.There have been none seen in since 2007, and as an animal thats always hanging about at the water surface, thats pretty much a sign its gone. Its very very likely, that last one seen in 2007 has now passed on.

I think it's funny when westerners complain about China creating extinction for these animals. Westerners have caused more animals to be extinct then anyone else! It's the problem with industrialization. Westerners NOW have a foothold on the economy and can NOW afford to accommodate animals. But that wasn't so in the old days. But no one was crying about then were they? China contains about 5% of the extinct animals in the world. The rest? Well you figure it out. It's not hard.

From the very start, it was very hard for China to save it. At the highest population when nothing had been done to it, there aere around 6000, that would've been considered threatened or endangered already for other animals.

If the Baiji went extinct due to the shifting of land masses, an opening to saltwater areas, or overeating its own food supplies then its plight would have been more understandable. But dying from manmade industrial pollution isn't something I consider a tenet of natural selection. It pretty much died a meaningless unnecessary death.

Baiji are extinct now, but their time is done. Its called natural selection and those animals that can't adapt quick enought to survive are bound to die. I'm pretty sure Chinese Biologists and others already foresaw this and put little or no effort to save the dolphins- which is acceptable if you calculate costs and the problems the Chinese would face to conserve 1 species on river dolphin.

Chinese can't do anything.. We have sooo little information on the Chinese River Dolphin. They can't just go in and rescue the Baiji. They need the boats to travel through the river- its called economy. The river dolphin just are curious towards noise and more toward boats. If you don't know, Baiji evolved about 25 million years ago by dolphins and they developed small eyes, but an excellent sense of hearing and echolocation. Their eyes are small (Like chinese :D) so they can't see boats.

I live in China, and I do agree that the Chinese way of thinking is quite different from the Western way of thinking. They also don't have the same standard of care for animals. Heck, my dogs live better than most Chinese people here in Shanghai.

The sad truth is that many Asian civilizations don't have the same respect or fondness for animals that Westerners have. While we may see dolphins or tigers as beautiful creatures, many Asians may see them as food or as a source of folk medicine. It's a cultural difference that we may not understand, but it is a tragic reality.

I've seen documentaries showing Cambodian resturants serving bear paw soup. They had several live animals caged or chained outside the kitchen. When someone ordered the soup, they would cut off the paw of a LIVE sun bear (an endangered species), cauterize the wound, and leave the animal agonizing in pain until someone ordered more soup. Of course, not all Asians condone this, but their society is very different from ours.

I only used Cambodia as an example. I could have gone on and on through much of Southeast Asia as well as parts of China. Things like this are occuring throughout the world but many Asian countries have high concentrations of illegal trade in animal parts mostly going to folk medicines. A recent fad in Thailand is drinking venemous snake blood greatly reducing the number of snakes and increasing the number of rats.

This species of dolphin lives in the Yangtze River in China.
I do hope that it is not indeed extinct.Even if they do find some the gene pool would most likely be too shallow to carry on the species.
It is a shame that we are losing such beautiful creatures due to greed.

This species was dying out due mainly to the pollution within the Yangtze river. Most of the waste from nearby cities is or was dumped into this river. The result was a decrease in fecundity for this species.

Despite the cute looks, the rapid declining of baiji is not noticed by the world. There is little or no money spent to save them.
