  • Saw Mike Kineally with Umphreys Mcgee a couple years ago in San Diego, worth going to the UMPHREY'S sight and downloading the concert for 10 bucks, (this is not an advertisement)

  • and to cast390 who said, "sounds like shit" ... CLEAN YOUR FREEKING EARS DUMMY. Didn't anyone ever tell you poop in your ears is NOT a good thing? and yes, I'll bet your a bit smelly, too.

  • speechless ~ wow

  • God damn hes good.

  • these kids are mutants!!!

  • Holy shuckin' fit!!! Awesome!!! Thanks for the show.

  • DAMN! Few even know why it's called "The Black Page"

This piece is not something that can be improvised. It's all written out, note for note. That was amazing.

  • What 321Snoot said - most kids this age are doing bad Metallica renditions. Playing this piece is a major achievement for musicians of any age, and to hear a kid pull off the Black Page is simply astonishing. Massive, massive kudos.

  • So, cast390: "Sounds like shit", as in, the "sound" is shitty, or, the musicians aren't playing well? Yeah, the video isn't exactly a "professional" job, but so what? And the musicians? Other than Keneally - who's a certified monster - they're KIDS who happen to be good enough (and GREAT, based on how young they appear to be) to attempt an impossibly hard-to-play song for a musician of any level, and do a more-than-respectable job of it. Any way you meant it, you're a critical asshole.

  • @321snoot Great comment-anyone wanting to tear down the kid's performance is a straight up fool! Anyone who can pull this off is badass in my book, whatever their age. I don't care about who is the youngest or oldest to pull off a feat-to pull this off is great whether you're 1 or 101.

  • Sounds like shit

  • Holy fuck.

  • Motherfucking kids, man!!!!

  • keneally is an elite virtuoso and how many kids if any can play the whole black page like that?

  • buddy rockin the keys looks like he just got a new telefunken u47

  • Fast and Bulbous!!!

  • Zach plays Zappa

  • I'll take Mike over Jack Black any day

  • Fast and Bulbous!

  • This is EXACTLY what great composers can do- a man who performed with the composer playing with the new generation. This is glorious- thank you so much for this post!!

  • Excellent! The little people can play.

  • Hope Frank's watching this from up there. This is the best thing I've seen on You Tube for a long time. I wasn't doing that when I was 12!!! Mike Keneally is a genius. A very big genius, but still a genius!

  • I think too many people here are paying too much attention to the occasional slip by Mike and not even attention to the fact that these kids are fucking awesome !

  • LOL, I hope that girl at 3:20 didn't play right after. One tough act to follow. I'd just give up if that were me!

  • Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mike is loving this ,,, playing with these youths who have taken the time to ace this epic Zappa tune. Mike is the master support mechanism in any band he performs with and this is no exception. These youths show great promise in music and that makes this performance all the better!

  • an sg with a floyd rose very nice lovin it

  • it's a maestro tremolo...

  • Steve and Dweezil just kick everyone else's ass on the ending of this song. Absolutely butchered ending and on Version #2. Good player...needs professional precision.

  • Except for the fact he WAS the guitar player in Zappa's band in 1988. He also performed this in 1991 in Zappas Universe flawlessly.

Right now he is just tossing this off from memory....remember. all musicians are human.

  • It's hard to tell that that is Keneally, he looks bigger than I remember him. Yeah Mike is definitely one of the best guitarists in the industry. You are right, he is a flawless player. The Black Page, as I have come to learn is hard to keep up if you don't play it almost daily.

As much as we are human, we should never lose our technique which keeps us at the best of our game. I don't want to lose mine, and I don't think Mike will ever lose his.

  • no disrespect but mike is human, NOT flawless, i have seen him fuck up on many occasions, but only because he is so good and wanted by so many that he has the opportunity to be on hundreds of vids, im not knocking him, but he isnt flawless, still better than i will probably every be though ; )

  • bollocks everybody fucks up the impossible 11ths on C .. very difficult on guitar

  • I still love watching this piece. I am a huge fan of both Frank's work and Mike's abilities.

This was an awesome job by all involved. Cheers from Australia.

  • Hey very nice playing man:) Cheers from the Yukon

  • This is beautiful in every possible way, but it makes me wonder how many cease & desist letters they received from Gail's lawyers.

If she hated him, she should have torched the vault. If she loved him she should quit suing everyone who mentions his name without having signed a royalty contract.

  • No shit!! Frank Zappa'a catalog has been effectively censored (ironically, a word that Frank himself loathed) from anyone who doesn't PAY....and thus keep the Zappa Family Trust coffers full. They deserve a legacy, but so do we............open up the vaults, you parsimonious bitch!!

  • Pretty great vid, eggsellent playing. Next time try to con Mike into playing "Sharleena".

  • Simply GREAT and awesome!!!!Congrats!

  • How great to get to play with Mike Keneally, the most underrated musician on the planet!

  • wow, this is great! keep on doing the good thing!

  • All you young fucks out dare could learn a lot from this kid. Fuck learning Bodom solos. Learn this song from beginning to end and open dat mind!! Holla!!!

  • i need that official transcription son

  • I agree the kid kicked Mikes ass doing steve Vai's part.

  • Good job, I think I like the kid better than Mike.

  • Where and when and how was this? Please ... I would like to know. This was very very good. Cheeers

  • Let's hear yours.

  • I agree with Twin, let's see your fucking vid dude..

  • of course, lets try to be objective. For their age, the average musician skill and the overall density of this song : IT WAS DAMN GOOD !!! and they were having FUN !

  • holy fuck i want you in my band

  • well, you nailed both the eleven in the time of two and the eleven in the time of four, and those are the hard ones IMO. the drummer in places tried to do too much and the time suffers. kudos, when I was that young I never could've even tried this

  • Great ! you're great, boy.

  • Hell yeah!

  • That's like freaking Rock School on TALENT!!

  • hehehe I found it pretty good.. Even damn good... Great energy on stage !!!

  • Thanks mike ,This is super no matter what perfectionists say,i'd like to see you fools playing like this prodigys, zappa rules!

  • Well done. Other 14 Year olds could take some lessons from you on how to work on developing themselves, actually learning and having a Talent, instead of wasting their lives hanging around in Gangs and sitting at computer games all day long.

Great stuff, I believe FZ would be proud and see plenty of hope in the future of Music.

  • Completely Amazing!! Mind Boggeling!

  • im sorry but u ruined the black page

  • +1 that was pretty poor tbh

  • I totally agree!!!

  • Absolutely stunning, Zach! Keep it up, buddy... and remember, MUSIC IS THE BEST!

  • yeah all teenagers

  • This is a musical Wonder ! ! ! ! !

  • cool! way to go, kid! keep it up! also great performance by everyone else. were you all teenagers playing there? of course mike is out of the question hehe

  • I`m impressed.....roy chubby brown and jodie foster duet.....must remember to put their next tour dates in my diary

  • Good! I'm also a 14 years old Zappa fan, and musician, I think that's cool!

  • Good on ya its cool to see young players excited and playing Franks music thx for putting this up and good luck you seem to be one the right track awesome playing

  • it's because it is school of rock... no joke im in it ;)

  • this looks like fucking Jack Black school of rock, featuring Mike Keneally

  • awesome

  • the kids really good.I'm learning this song now and its really tough

  • This is so the shite! Let's see, when I was 14, I was listening to Deep Purple Made In Japan when it was first released. On vinyl long player disc. That same year I heard Frank Zappa music for the first time on the way to a J.Geils/Humble Pie concert. The car driver put on an 8-track tape of Over-Nite Sensation. "I might be moving to Montana soon..." It would be another 2 or 3 years until Black Page #2 was released.

  • zach page playing black page. cool shit!

  • It´s that a kids band or what? Theyre all kids, except Mike, playing one of the very hard Zappa tunes. Sick!

  • meh, zpz was the real shit with terry bozzio

  • This is the paul green school of rock. I'm on drums in this video and I'm twelve. I turned 13 about a week ago. Zach is thirteen in this video and has really, really improoved since. He's allmost fourteen. The rest of the band is from age 15 to 18. You should not be comparing us to Terry Bozzio, Steve Vi, or Napoleon Murphy Broch

  • When you play the music of professionals, especially complex suff like zappa don't assume that because of your youth you are in a league of your own. Don't get me wrong fr your age you are awesome, but you're playing music that people ae used to hearing Virtuosos play, so get used to being compared to those virtuosos. I play a lot of malmsteen and vai, think of how many times I hear people telling m that I'm not either one.

  • it is a privelage to have been exposed to this music at such a young age.just trying my best

  • Sorry, I didn't in any way mean to put down what you do. You have obviously got good taste in music and from what i hear a good ear for it too. by all means keep it up, because you can only get better at this point. In no way did I intend to discourage you. I do find it incredible that someone of your age has taken an interest in zappa, just remember that when people listen they don't think about nor do they care about a person's age. Let the music speak about your experience and not your age.

  • paul green is the mastermind behind teaching us the music of zappa.if you can play zappa well, you can play anything.

  • The beat for this song is really weird, one moment it's slow, fast, and slow again. The noting is also very odd. You did a great job, nonetheless.

  • Who is that little boy?

  • Hey, are you me, or am I you? Who am us anyway?

  • Sorry, I`m the real deal;) Your spelling is totally wrong

  • Good, the burden of trying to live up to it was killing me! Thanks for taking it on.

  • man, when did keneally get all fat?

  • Well, it's not like Mike was ever a *super-slim* guy, but he has gained some weight in the past few years. He'll be 46 in December, and your metabolism slows down a great deal when you hit your thirties.

  • omg...this is fu**ing sick !!! can`t believe my eyes !!!

    greeaaaat stuff man !!!

  • absolutely amazed! Hope to hear from you very much the coming years

  • holy shit, you played it perfectly. Mike missed one of the runs.

  • can you upload the video with that girl playing please?

  • That's one of the coolest things I could imagine!! Playing a zappa classic with non other than Mike Keneally!! Dude, I hope you realise how lucky you are for having had the chance to do this!!

    Great playing btw!!

  • very cool

  • Crazy! Keneally is great but this young up and comer is cool for even

attempting that song, really tough stuff.

  • Thats way cool, dude, please explain how and when this took place. Incredible playing!

  • wow man you can seriously play

you held your own along side a legend :)

  • WTF? That drummer is TWELVE????

  • holy fuck he probly met him in some guitar shop

  • the sincerest form of flattery is aping, thoust apeth the best for a weenager!! How old are you and where did you learn those licks? Is Mike your Dad?

  • Very cool man! u rock! Mike's not bad either

  • Can we have a story here? You realise you were playing with God I hope!

  • sounds bad
