so theres nothing special that needs to be done when the string is put through the hole in the winding post? like no knot or other way to secure it there?
@guillotinedeath Are you sure the neck is setup right? and it has nothing to do with what bridge it is aslong as the saddles are correct. It could be either the saddles or the neck.
@fredsassy5 If you change all the strings at one time you can bend the neck because of all the new force that will be weighing on it from newly tight wound strings. So if you plan on changing all your strings I would recommend changing one a day for six days. It is tedious but trust me, I change all the strings on my acoustic guitar at the same time once and sure enough I had a slightly bent neck. Throws the guitar tuning for a loop and it never sounds the same again.
what a effin joke. again, another mistitled youtube video. it should say "how to string a guitar if you've already done this before". he didn't even get in detail about how to wrap it around the top, as i've seen so many other videos stress the importance of.
if i have different strings on every string but my E(6th) string and the E(6th) string is a different brand will it sound different than the other strings? probably right? well, I know all the strings sound different obviously. XP but like more buzzier? or a different sound? cuz i stretched them out and everything.
@thebigw1004 Sometimes when you change string brands the tension might be a bit different, meaning your guitar will need a setup (bridge/neck adjustment)
I got a windermajigger in my Xmas stocking about 5 years ago lol and I never knew what it was for. I knew I could use part of it to pop the pegs out of my acoustic guitar but that was about it... now I know! Thanks hahahaa I suck.
Those post windings do not respond to changes in tension during bending, tremelo use or even tuning quickly enough and the delayed slippage is the main reason you tune your guitar so often. There is very good reason behind the method suggested by Fender and D'Addario themselves. Half a turn is all thats actually needed to tune up and that'll keep your guitar in tune providing the nut isn't gripping the string. See - youtube.com/watch?v=1rhdxCECcl4 (I don't work for them BTW.)
Thanks for the instructions!! This'll really help!! It will help me brother, too. He's been playing guitar for many years now and just got a winder-ma-jigger yesterday, and never knew how to use one! Thanks again!
@Emceetem Not only that but if a string breaks it can also scratch you. I have a friend who was changing his strings and had a string pop back and stab him in the hand. Not comfortable.
Thanks for the easy video. All the other ones weren't clear. I'm a drummer who found a 29 year old guitar in the trash. Now its all fixed up and works beautifully .
Shouldn't you stretch the strings a little? Strings do stretch over time... I guess it's just to keep the strings in tune a little better but still, shouldn't you do it anyway?
hey im having a problem. i put on my E string (fat one) and it makes a fuzz sound every time i play it. i have a Jackson, and they are Ernie Ball strings (new) im prety sure the string is not very tight or very loose. i think its my guitar idk plz help
If your getting a "fuzz" sound, try releasing some of the tension out of the neck. The problem (usually) is that your neck of your guitar is to tight and because of this tension the strings are a little to close.
can anyone else hear music playing? every time I pause the video to find out where the music is coming from, the music stops. This is freaking me out.
This REALLY helped a lot. I wished I had've watched this video before breaking my brand new strings trying to figure out the process. Well, thanks! :D
having trouble stringing the 2nd string(strat knock-off model) i cant get it to stay under the metal thing on the head and when i wind it, it doesnt tighten around the string go-around-thingy and it drops down and goes over the screw that holds it....its frustrating me because i cant get it to wind around it.....
Hey i always use slinkys and have never had problems but my son started playing guitar recently and his strings rust within a few days....he wipes them down after every practise but they still rust...is there any additive to use some say WD40 or spray lube but i thought it could get pretty messy. any advise would be greatfully received, Thanks.
@vainparasite how in the hell do you get your strings to rust within a few days? my guess is hes probably not washing his hands before playing, or doing something that is exposing the strings to water in some way, but other than that I dont know what to tell ya, I use slinkys and they have never came even remotely close to rusting no matter how much abuse they took (not that I dont take good care of them)
I think its a combination clammy hands and playing it for around 2 to 3 hours a day....he does wash his hands before playing and wipes his guitar down after he's finished....must be his age with the clammyness ;0)
@ZombieLad1 there ae adjustments on the tuners. by adjusting those you can tune your guitar much easier. it's a phillips head screw on the end of the tuner, loosen that just a bit and check the tightness, if it's still not working for you, continue to adjust the tuner until you find that spot that works for you. keep in mind not to loosen it too much, as this will cause your guitar to not stay in tune as all desire one to do. good luck :)
u either hav to raise ur action or adjust ur truss rod. but its not a simple fix. u could totally screw up ur guitars sound by adjusting the action wrong and u could actually ruin the guitar if u mess up the truss rod adjustment. u should have an experienced guitar tech check it out. he/she will know exactly wut to do
that can be due to two things... either your guitar needs to be calibrated which is probably it or the neck is warping. Still you should probably get it to a music store or somethin to check and get it fixed. Good Luck!
cheers that was great, you have the same guitar as me i think, i've been playing acoustic for years and have just moved onto electric so didn't know. thanks.
you should have been clearer about the direction of how to tighten it, mine snapped, i did it the wrong way, you should have said , hold the guitar flat and twist outwards!
What about the actual lock? When you run the string thru the key, pull it back the opposite way you intend to wind, run excess underneath the existing then bend it up tight, hold it, and wind. That actually helps to keep the guitar in tune. I also tend to stretch the string out as I wind up and tune up. If I am doing anything incorrectly I would like to know why, if you could help.
though i know how to string a guitar i had a look at ur vid and it is a great vid in teaching people how to string a guitar i give a 5 star rating. everyone subscribe to this dude!!

I dont think so,if you ask in a music shop for acoustic of classic guitar strings, they should give you acoustic or classic ones. There is a difference between eletric and acoustic strings.
i just have one question; @ around 1:37 in the video, where you pull the string out from the bottom, what happens if the little thing attached to the bottom of the string gets stuck in the hole, not allowing you to continue to pull it out or i guess poke it out?
Haha i just went to guitar center and bought the exact same strings. this is my third time restringing after about a year (stoped playing guitar for a while) and because i dont know that much about strings i asked what he recomened. And it just happened to be elixer stings! Also i didnt know about giving the string rom . Thanks for the tip
ahaha i was like most guys and didnt give the string room before i tightened it, will it ruin the string? or should i unwind the string adn rewind? or get a new set of strings and rewind....just lost 12 bucks in that case :(
My only criticism would be to please let us know if you are tightening the string clockwise or counter-clockwise, instead of saying "away from you or towards you." Also I would lower the music bed, or increase your voice...great instructional video though! Thank you!
this might be a dumb question but is it a good idea to destring my guitar just to take off my pickups and faceplate? cause ive always been curious to just mess around with my pickups. but im not sure if its a good idea. also if you destring it can you put back the same strings? can anyone help?
no string lock? most people i know leave the .."tuning peg" i guess - the whole toward the ground, slide the string in and wrap the string around to lock the string in place.. or atleast thats how i learned.. good vid..learning how to string your guitar early really helps save money and frustration of tuning over and over again ;o
Thanks for this vid, but I have one odd problem. My guitar is an Ibanez sa-120 with a floating bridge. I have 4 springs in the back from when I was using a 56 gauge (low E). When I put the new strings in do I have to take a spring out because I'm not sure what to do with that kind of bridge.
wow, thanks for the slack-trick. i've been trying to figure out a way to determine how much slack to use for the LONGEST time, and it's always fucked me up. now i'll never screw up. thanks!
Interesting way to deterine the slack. But also the first person I have seen that does not wrap or pull the string under itself and roll the string over itself (locking the string in place).
can anyone tell me where i can find a link on how to stirng a guitar were the tuning pegs have a slit in them not a hole to thread the string through it would be much appriciated

my strings are alittle far from my fretboard. is that bad? they dont lay flat. i am using a les paul epiphone.
TQXPreturns 1 year ago
It's preference
The height between your fret board and strings is called the "action".
If you have "high action", then it's up to you weather you want it there or not, it's a preference of sound and comfort.
Although, if the strings are REALLY high up, as in you can hardly press down on them to get a sound out, then that may be a problem.
Check the hieght of your bridge, saddle and nut
With electric guitars, it's usually a problem with the bridge IMO. Try to adjust the hieght

ahaha i was like most guys and didnt give the string room before i tightened it, will it ruin the string? or should i unwind the string adn rewind? or get a new set of strings and rewind....just lost 12 bucks in that case :(

My only criticism would be to please let us know if you are tightening the string clockwise or counter-clockwise, instead of saying "away from you or towards you." Also I would lower the music bed, or increase your voice...great instructional video though! Thank you!

this might be a dumb question but is it a good idea to destring my guitar just to take off my pickups and faceplate? cause ive always been curious to just mess around with my pickups. but im not sure if its a good idea. also if you destring it can you put back the same strings? can anyone help?
guineapirate132 2 years ago
You can restring a guitar with the same strings if your careful and you dont break your strings
TJS678 2 years ago
Ahhh, don't mess around with the pick ups unless you're replacing them... and , you can re-use strings, but they sound retarded.
raikou6 2 years ago
well.. you cant put on the same strings.. but ive never messed with my pickuos so idk.

no string lock? most people i know leave the .."tuning peg" i guess - the whole toward the ground, slide the string in and wrap the string around to lock the string in place.. or atleast thats how i learned.. good vid..learning how to string your guitar early really helps save money and frustration of tuning over and over again ;o

Thanks for this vid, but I have one odd problem. My guitar is an Ibanez sa-120 with a floating bridge. I have 4 springs in the back from when I was using a 56 gauge (low E). When I put the new strings in do I have to take a spring out because I'm not sure what to do with that kind of bridge.

wow, thanks for the slack-trick. i've been trying to figure out a way to determine how much slack to use for the LONGEST time, and it's always fucked me up. now i'll never screw up. thanks!
Stellar420 2 years ago
Interesting way to deterine the slack. But also the first person I have seen that does not wrap or pull the string under itself and roll the string over itself (locking the string in place).
