Good stuff. Except I'm pretty sure Bill Gates never said "640K ought to be enough for anyone," and Mohandas Ghandi never said "First they ignore you ..."
@mgiuca I don't know about Ghandi but I am pretty sure Bill Gates said that, proof is over youtube but I don't bother to look it up now though it is pretty easy to find. There is a video of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates together in an interview and they talk about it and laugh at that saying.
@sonay1986 Okay apparently YouTube doesn't allow links, so you will have to Google search. It is well known that he denies ever saying it (they were probably laughing about the misattributed quote). Whether he's lying is harder to say, but I have never seen a citation. Wikiquote and Wired (google: wired bill gates 640k) strongly attest that he never said it. The Ghandi quote similarly never has a citation (see Wikiquote) so is disputed at best.
:P the whole point of Linux imo is choice and software freedom. It's strength is it's diversity, everything that is useful goes upstream. If Debian makes an innovation for instance chance is it will appear soon in RedHat, most likely improved or vice versa. Linux is like lego. You can build what you want from it and even use your friend's lego car that he/she built and make it into a better lego car :P hehe it's a system that evolves thx to gpl and everyone that contributes. It's revolutionary.
Maybe if the community pooled together and worked on one distro, e.g debian or fedora and standardised it shit would happen. At the moment it is literally just software anarchy.
Using Lucid the other day and realise they have fixed somethings and broke a whole lot more.
This is supposed to be the LTS... Hopefully an enterprise version of linux will become more successful and branch out from there, like microsoft/ibm did back in the day.
@ljscott1990 it isn't anarchy, I have no idea where you would get that idea, but it isn't, and any good program is one that can easily be ported to another OS, it isn't really that hard to make portable code, or at least it wouldn't be if windows wasn't such a weird operating system
Getting a program to install and run in Linux is like booking a flight to Hawaii, but having to print the tickets yourself, building the airplane, fueling the airplane, and then flying it to Hawaii yourself.....crashing all the way.
Provided that it even installs even after it does load up.
And both scenarios have happened to me because the OS is so fragile that one false slip, one disagreeable or impartial install has the chance of breaking your installation. That is why is say the scene needs more collaboration, so crap like that doesn't happen...at least not so often.
@reivenlocke What the heck are you trying to use, Gentoo or something? I would recommend using Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, openSUSE, or something simple.
I 100% agree with you though, some flavors of Linux are a massive pain to install (coughGentoocough). Definitely not every distro though.
Look at those "Professionals" or "Authorities" and their arrogance... as they always speak like Rulers ... "because We are the educated people in high society, not like you students or hobbyists, and we know more than you"... "so if you don't like it, no freedom?? Go and F*&^ yourself, we just keep making your money"
It won't until the warring states of Linux come together. In its current state, it's a trainwreck, but can very easily be righted with tighter collaboration.
@reivenlocke lol I think describing things like Ubuntu as a "trainwreck" is a bit excessive, but I do kinda see your point - I think it needs more.. yes collaboration, and also continued refinement of the final product :)
if you both want more refinement, use a distro like debian. they absolutely make sure everything is stable before releasing it. for something designed for linux beginners, ubuntu is kinda a bad choice because its not very stable
@schmidtbag I'm not a beginner :) I've been using Linux for years, it's just I like an OS that's user-friendly and attractive/stylish! And I don't like macs lol
ya, now is when people will agree with it most so they really should re-post at least SOME linux commercial. this one is a little too long, but the ibm ones are good
Most of the modernized world runs on Linux or Unix. Virtualizing your Windows servers via ESX? ESX is a Red Hat system. The internet? Most of it is hosted on Apache.
The desktop market is a large hurdle to jump for OSS, but it's eventually going to happen.
ultimately linux is the future. As more people begin to code for it, there will be no limits on its potential. and its nature of frequent kernel updates insures its security and ability to adapt.
It is weird. Linux is the Kernel, and Gnu is the operating system, but I think the big thing is that Linus is cool, and RMS is a bit of an asshole, and Linux is just a better name. :)
@Keruaran That may be true, that he used GNU, but had there not been such, he would have used something else and it would work all the same. Linux is inevitable. Linux is unstoppable. Microsoft tried to kill the Linux, but they failed, and were thrown to the ground. Apple tried to become the Linux, but they failed, and were thrown to the ground. BSD tried to outwit the Linux, but they failed, and were thrown to the ground. Commercial Unix systems tried to outclass the Linux, but they cost money
I don't know why the people almost always call it linux ? it's GNU/Linux ! Linux is only the kernel ! We GNU/Linux users know that almost all the apps that run under the linux Kernel are GNU licensed i.e GPL . So I think that the GNU project should be given credit and mentioned as the official name of the system is GNU/Linux , do a `uname -o` and you'll see it :-) i.e -o is for operating system.
Nobody cares I wish they would just name the whole thing Linux and then call the kernel "Linux Kernel". Nobody cares about the idea of GNU and that fat ugly man called Richard Stallman. It's gay no wonder Steven Fry did a video on it.
Nearly the entire base system is Gnu. It makes more sense to call it the Gnu OS than Linux OS. Nobody writes software for Linux, most everything is built for Gnu libraries. It is cool how much attention Linux gets, but I don't think there is much of anyone that could explain the difference between a Kernel and a hardware abstraction layer.
Yes, the correct way to call linux is GNU/Linux. But because of the lazy nature of the people, most of us prefer to drop the GNU. Although I strongly agree linux is nothing w/o GNU application. I still call GNU/Linux as linux. Just like most people prefer to call their friends given name instead of their full name. But be honest, if I have a chance to take a tour in MIT, I will tried to pay a visit to RMS. Cause his one of the key personal bring everything together. ;)
GNU and Linux are still different, GNU uses entirely free software, and completely open source software, whereas Linux will use propitiatory software, this is the main difference between them.
I'm saying that the names refer to different ways of making distros these days, yes GNU is the system and Linux is the Kernel however if you get GNU it will use entirely open source software for everything, whereas Linux will use propriatory software out of the box, this is the major distinction between the GNU named OS and the OS's going under the Linux flag.
Gnu is just a little part of the system known as "linux", you could also name it GNU/X11/Apache/TeX/Perl/Python/Linux if you would want to. That is why we just simply call it Linux.
Linux has not won. It wont win until developers get smarter and start making it more (stupid) user friendly. It wont win until business men get out there and sell it. It wont win until there is a large selection of PROFESSIONAL applications for it back by professional companies.
I use Linux and would love to see it "win" but it IS currently for computer nerds (like myself) who know how to use it, and have specific needs.
Evidence says otherwise. Almost every non-nerd friend I have is favorably surprised when shown Ubuntu with its graphical effects and load of apps for everyday use. So much that Dell decided to sell a good chunk of its desktops and laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled.
I do realize that Linux stills lack things in order to "win", but the current level of user friendliness, power and compatibility makes it enough for the average user. And that's a great achievement.
I don't think the commercial is about Linux on the desktop, though IMHO linux is already strong there.
RedHat makes money mostly by selling linux to companies. Linux has a lot greater market share there than in the desktop for many years now. Also many people learn about linux in universities. This is how linux survived when almost nobody knew about it.
As for the desktop, when you see so many cheap netbooks coming with linux preinstalled, everybody will understand it is easier to use than MS.

Uh-huh. Just because you put it with quotes of Gandhi and MLK doesn't mean it is going to happen. Linux is a very good OS for certain markets, but for your everyday average home computer it will never pass Windows and Mac.

right, linux is the biggest enemy of microsoft, their most serious threat. Every day linux is getting better and better, so far is easy to use, even by me. its beautifull also with better performance and is more secure than windows. I think linux will end the microsoft dominance over the desktop, if microsoft doesnt respond with an os like xp. thanks.
p.d. I switch from windows to linux in my bussines and it save me lots of money.
I think that linux is going to take over more and more PC's, everyone finds that vista sucks, if thy don't change the way on making windows 7 people will still find it to suck and XP will be to old to use, that leaves only 2 options linux or mac osX

"HAL" IS being unrecognized here, as M.S.(NT) has HAL in the kernel AND linux uses HAL too.
HAL is basically a direct interaction between hardware and kernel. at its lowest form.
some developers use API (which is a higher level).
HAL is important to save proc. consumption ( esp for embedded) and very lite.
the purpose of "linux" being called linux, well, unix/ linux/ is synominous with FSF (*free software).
gnu came 1st..yes, linux ported it, and together are wonderful.
