Dan didn't have to have the surgery either. It was his choice, and he chose it primarily to eliminate the hump on his back and straighten his shoulders. As his parents, we were in favor of the surgery because we kept seeing his curve progress worse and worse with each visit and thought having the surgery at 17 would be easier than having it later on when it was worse. I'm glad you are fine not having the surgery!
Thanks for sharing the photos of before and after surgery. But does this young man feel that he benefited from the surgery? Did he have pain that has now decreased? Did he improve functionally following the surgery?
The surgery photos are very informative--but what was the outcome for this young person?
You should look a two other videos I made: Scoliosis Survival and Scoliosis Survival: 18 months later. Dan totally benefited 100% from the surgery. He has no pain. He is completely active, as you can see from the follow-up video. A full life.
hi! i'm 15 years old i'm a male and i have 54 degrees. i also skateboard and the docters wanna give surgery! since your son had it all ready can he do any physical activities?
He can do anything he wants. He's going backpacking and rock climbing this summer. He snowboards, he skateboards, but he's not too good! He plays lacrosse. He drives a car. The doctor told him not to play football- that's all.
i had a posterior instrumentation six months ago, in november 2007. i had a double curve, my thoracic curve was *60+ and my lumbar curve was around *38.5.
i've never actually been told what my curves are post-op.
My son grew an inch to be six feet tall exactly. He was very disappointed, expecting to be 6'2". But he's the perfect height to me. His thoracic curve was 57 and lumbar curve was 44 or something like that. I'm glad you're doing well.
Oh im so scared coz I have a 30 curve and then i wore a brace and it went down to 14 and now my doctor tells me to take it off. but im afraid that without my brace it'll get worse:( My friend did a surgery like that and it seems so scary.
How old are you? Maybe you're done growing and your curve won't progress. The fact that you got a 30 degree curve down to 14 is wonderful. Good for you! You really made a sacrifice and now you get to see it pay off. If your curve progresses some, you can always put the brace back on until you've grown more. I don't think surgery is in your future. Breathe!
Time will tell. You may not have hit your growth spurt yet. Also, there is an x-ray of the hip and hand that can determine if you are done growing. Dan's surgeon did this several times to make sure he was done growing. By 16 he was. He was 5'11" before the surgery and 6'0 afterwards. Request these xrays the next time you see your doc. I wish you the best!
Different hospitals use different things, but ours used two titanium rods and titanium screws that went through the pedicles. It looks like Dan has 16 screws and two braces that go across the two rods.
yeah i just had my surgery in march and i had a 49 degree curve. a month later im feeling completely normal even though i have a lot of healing to do. my curve is in the 20s now too. it's amazing what doctors can do :)
i had my spin done when i was 11 caz i had 45 degrees double curve had i can do physical activities

I am doing exercises so I don't need that type of surgery, after four months I'd say it's paying off.

The top curve was 40 something. The middle curve was 57 and the lumbar was 40 something. Now they're all in the low 20s.
