In 1986 there was an underground production-house in Seattle called SUB-POP (it was named after a fnazine named SUBTERRAENEAN POP created by the same guy, Bruce Pavitt) and they released a compilation of the BEST Seattle bands. It includes themes from lots of underground bands (it actually includes the first Sonic Youth EP, Kill Yr Idols), but the music is amazing.
