  • The player loses the game when cows stray behind his horse without being roped. The skull causes the horse to buck so it delays you from roping for a second. The black cow is worth 100 points if you rope it. Your horse bucks if you touch it and it strays behind you. You "stray count" is lowered by one each time a cow gets behind your horse. When the count reaches zero the game is over. You earn an extra stray for each 1000 points.

  • @dyancey Thanks a lot!

  • @dyancey I've remade this game into Doom:

Thanks for answer how the cowboy loses the game :)

  • How do the player lost the game? Maybe if that skull or the black cow touch him?

I want to recriate this game, and other atari games, but I dont know some details of it.

  • Did you take a photograph of your TV screen showing the required score and then send it to Activision headquarters to get a merit patch?

  • @bluemountain555 Yes, back in the 1980's I did and I earned the Stampede Trail Drive patch.

  • I must also add I was never as good as this guy!

  • Oh, this brings back memories! One of my favourites from a wasted youth...

  • i see how to do alot better at this game now. thing is,its gonna get boring now. : (

  • I had this game.Forgot the title name till today :) The memories.

  • I'm coming for your record... You are second in the world now, I just started last week and have obtained 12909. Friendly competition, more people should get into this game, its a blast! I listen to Ghost Riders in the sky on loop and ride the devils herd often!

  • You can probably beat me, it's not terribly difficult now that you know the pattern. I wish the game didn't end at the 8th herd because I could play forever. Or at least tie Todd Rogers' record. Apparently, he has a different binary that doesn't contain this game ending bug. He has proven to my satisfaction that he did obtain the score of 99,999, but I cannot do it on my version of the game.

  • Thats insane, I haven't made it to the 8th herd yet. 99,999 is ridiulous though. I was just trying to spark a friendly competition, as of now you are superior. I use a slightly different pattern but it is pretty close to the same thing. It took me a few rides to figure out the order that they throw the cows out in because I was riding randomly, now its not so bad. Good luck to you sir.

  • I just played this game for the first time the other night (I got an Atari 2600 for Christmas of 1981, and had many cartridges, including several Activision titles, but had simply never played this game), and it is surprisingly good! One of the most playable of all Atari 2600 games, in contemporary times, I'd say.

  • This is funny.

  • I played this game a little bit... :)

  • This was a great game for the 2600.

  • a mi me gustaba mas asustarlo q agarrarlos...

  • man activision made the best atari games,,,i still play this

  • Would be better with sound.

  • Amazing job, you prioritize very well! And yeah, what does happen when you get to the 8th herd?

  • On my cartridge, the game becomes literally impossible to play past that point. I can no longer herd the cattle forward. I rope a few as they run past, but essentially the game is over in seconds.

I'm looking for a version of the game where that does not happen. If I can find this version, I can make an attempt at the max score.
