Very touching. I'm surprised that Coca-Cola or some other big company don't offer him the $3 Million he is asking for, and open "The Coca-Cola American Record Archive" or something along those lines. $3 Million for $50 Million worth of records that will probably only go up in value, as well as the positive PR, it would make good business sense.
Oh, now I am crying. Heaven could never be as beautiful as those rooms full of records that Paul Mawhinney has wandered through year after year. Just heaven to even look at in this video.
It's amazing what this guy has done. That collection should be made into its own museum. I'm only 15 now, but I'm a huge record collector and if I ever could, I'd buy this collection in a heartbeat.
How could nobody be interested in this!! That collection is the 8th wonder of the world. I want to spend months looking and listening to as many records as i could. Pure Bliss
@SevensNuts I think that you can start by contacting the person who made this documentary. His name is Sean Dunne. If you are serious about investing in this impressive archive, you might consider flying to Pittsburg and seek your contacts locally. I'm a research assistant with near-encyclopedic knowledge of phonograph records, will travel. -Hunter Mann
Wow - the archive is an amazing achievement - it needs saving, in its entirety.. What a great man, and so very sad that his life's work doesn't seem to be appreciated. Moreover, analogue recordings, be they on vinyl, or tape, or whatever, are *more durable* long-term than digital copies of anything - if a digital recording goes bad, chances are you lose the whole thing completely; if a vinyl LP is damaged, it will almost always remain playable. And analogue does sound better, no question.
@tramp2000 Good point. After buying it, there's the costs of packing it all, shipping it and then buying or building an archive to keep it in, insurance, security system, the cost of keeping the archive going & maintained, etc. The easiest thing to do would be to buy the building that the archive is in and either move there, or travel to it often to run the place. Like anything, it can take years to cultivate a buyer for something like this.
@victwi It's usually hard to sell it for what it's worth, and what about the many years he spent collecting & archiving it? What was his time & knowledge worth? I recently attended a big car auction in Arizona and saw many cars selling for less than they cost to store, but that's the market. Big time car collectors don't expect to make a profit on their cars, they just balance their checkbooks by selling & buying cars.
I own a car that cost $120K to build. I'd be lucky to get $40K for it.
Why is there not a museum or national archive that will buy this up? At 50million what is that per record? If it was spread to everywhere and everyone bought one couldn't we make this man very happy?
@ELECTRIKHEADS If there isn't one buyer or corporation that buys it, maybe 60 investors could from an LLC or a non-profit and each invest $50,000 in buying the Archive. Heck, there are coke addicted businessmen who spend that much a year up their nose. The problem with The Archive, is that the people who appreciate it do not have the money. Those that do, are interested in other thing, not records. Maybe NEIL YOUNG or EDDIE VEDDER will see this and save the archive?
This is incredible, to all those saying that none of this matters as we have 'progressed'.. Even if that was true, we still shouldn't ignore the past. New ways of listening to music are being created every day but that doesn't mean that we should completely stop using Vinyl. I can't believe no-one has bought this collection...
@BlueSuedeBabies If you think it's hard explaining the difference between analog vinyl and digital recordings, try explaining to people why film is still better than video, HD, etc. Film director Robert Rodriguez is anti-film, pro-video. He states "The only reason to shoot film these days is for purely nostalgic reasons." That's absurd.
How can anyone refer to this collection as bullshit just because there are new recording formats‽ So much of today’s music is lifted from yesteryear it beggars belief that even one person is too deaf to recognise it. If I won $3mil plus shipping, handling, import duty & somewhere to store them, I'd have the lot. Don't get me wrong Barry Manilow is not my cup of tea but it's important none the less for that.
Thats because we have sacd and flac/cd formats and noone is no longer interesteted in analising any of those oldschool, backward rock and roll bullshit.
Man, this is a awesom. Paul much respect to you. My wife thought I had a huge collection. I only have 10,000 records. If had 3 million, I would give 10 million. Three for you and & seven for your wife, because without her support you would have never achieved your gold. Good Luck my friend.
when he pulled out that elvis christmas album, chills went down my spine. I wanted to see the red vinyl. That record alone is worth thousands (priceless).
Paul Mawhinney is a legend a true human doing the works of collecting music for love not money and source for the future as with everything in life its an arguable debate about what 50 million dollars is to be spent on records or solutions for todays problems? His tears say it all and makes me think what will happen to my collection when i die.
ROFL at rapper millionaires and pop artists who are buying Bentleys and stupid shit when the first thing I would do would be to invest on this collection. For billionaires this is pocket change..
@djharmonix Most of those new-money celebs aren't educated or cultured enough to know the high value of this collection. The value is high in many more ways than just the money, that's for sure! Reality check: Most of the hot musicians these days will see their CDs in the 50 cent bins in a few years(new, cut-out copies). If I had $4 million, I'd spend $3 million on this archive and $500K to build an archive space with listening stations for the public.
