While this was an amazing and unlikely Stanley Cup run for the Vancouver Canucks and their faithful,it doesn't compare to the Minnesota North Stars run in '91 nor the '04 Calgary Flames run for the simple reason that Vancouver only beat one team who was better than they were!Minnesota & Calgary both had beat the supposed top-notch teams in the NHL in both of their respective runs.
The Canucks had such UGLY sweaters back in '82 :-p LOL.
The Islanders did sweep the Canucks in 4 straight in '82, but the 1st 2 games on Long Island were nailbiters; once they got to Vancouver, the Islanders' defence, Billy Smith in goal, & Mike Bossy up front taking over, the Canucks simply were no match for the Islanders' dynasty....
Remember...this was the early 80's. The style and look was different. What was most impressive about the 1981-82 Canuck team, was the fact that for most of the season, we didn't think they'd even make the playoffs, let alone make the final. For a team that didn't achieve much for so many years, it was a huge surprise. I still prefer Jim Robson to the play by play announcers the Canucks have now.
when i watch this video goalies today would stop most of those shots not problem the stand up postion IMO was a very bad goalie postioning compare to the hybrid and butterfly
Darthplecious, you putting that up on Youtube? I am sure lots of hockey fans would love to see that type of old school hockey. It would give the younger generation a taste of some hockey back in the day also.
On that note, I found out youtube banned DayWaker for copyright infringement on his NHL vids. Sucks, because I never copied any of them and they were AWESOME!
When I finally get all my content converted to DVR/DVD I will post stuff. I don't own copyrights. None are implied. My lawyer tells me the games I recorded myself means that I have a right to make copies for private non commercial home use. If I collect money it has to be donated to me for wear and tear on my equipment in the duplication process. But I don't copy games I purchased from the NHL, CBC etc. I would be in SERIOUS trouble if I did.Besides the NHL can tell a fan from a profiteer.
Does your name mean Campoli? Btw No disrespect intended in my response to you about the 1982 finals. I think both teams had reasons to be ashamed in those first two games. But game three was the SHIT!! Roger Nielson said he didn't think he ever saw a team better in its own end than the Islanders in games 3 and 4 of that series.Plus we had Smitty. You know he sent the Tiger after Bossy in 78 vs. Toronto? He sent anyone after LaFontaine in 1990. Talk about yellow. But I give him credit in '82.
I think that was Bernie Pascall. It sounds like him even though I remember him doing international hockey for CTV, and don't remember him doing NHL. The colour man was Howie Meeker who mentioned the 2 on 1 before Gradin's goal.
Pascall did do NHL hockey. He broadcast Canucks games on BCTV (CTV affiliate) in the late 70s and early 80s. But that doesn't sound like him. I think it might be a Calgary announcer. Ed Whalen?
I checked my 80's library and it's without a doubt Dave Hodge. I Recently acquired Philly 57's complete broadcast of WED12/30/81 Flyers at Oilers.Wayne gets five to get 50 in 39. MAN!He beat Peeters four times already and adds the fifth into the EN.Northlands goes ape!!Broadcaster Gene Hart was just amazed like the crowd. You can hear his voice quivering when Gretzky hits the net for the record setter. The 81-82 season was awesome! Start to finish.I'll chat this up any time.
Yeah, now that I listen to it, it does sound like Hodge. Earlier you mentioned Jim Robson . . . he's calling the games in Vancouver in this vid and is also the narrator.
Do you think he was referring to the bell ringing at the old Stampede? I have some VHS games from the 81 playoffs between PHI-CAL, MIN-CAL; four of the games are there.
Wow. I never get tired of this video. I must have watched Tigers OT goal 50 times in a row at one point!! My wife says she's happy you tube keeps me home more often.
Yeah, like I said, it was a Vancouver fan in the crowd with an air horn. In-arena goal horns were unusual in those days. Chicago and I think Buffalo had them, and a few teams had sirens. In most arenas, the organist played something uplifting when the home team scored.
It was great then wasn't it? But I love this game too much. I like today's arena's too.Fuckin' NHL had to expand so rapidly last time that all the goal scoring vanished. Still, with rule changes- smaller, more skilled crops of amateurs are coming. If we're lucky every team will have a fifty goal scorer or at least 4/5 of the league will in 10 years. It really was like that once. I have a nice library. I go to that world when I get get tired of today's low scoring and EXPENSIVE game.
Well, I think that theory that expansion caused scoring to go down is an old wive's tale that got out of hand. Better defense and goaltending was the result of an improved player pool, not a watered down one. And, of course, better coaching. But that's another discussion.
Heck yeah, there are many factors; I miss the I'd rather see a 6-5 or a 5-4 way more often than we do. Hockey encyclopedias shows that offense comes and goes but good D is the key. I have the games to prove it's no wives tale though. I record games today. I have close to a thousand games total; I'd say 60% is from 80-85.Players were smaller and a step slower. Way more room out there on the ice due to the shorter reaches and how much the D had to compensate for all the skill they faced.
Oh Calgary's D on the Canucks video is no where to be found. Vancouver drove the nails into the coffin alright but man, there IS lots of room out there! Where's Al McNeil's D? Poor Lemelin and Riggin. Vancouver was crashing and jamming the net all through that series!(all three games of it) Continued with it through the finals. later
What kind of hockey do you like to see or emphasize? I played as a kid and an adult in two different stints. I liked the coaches who emphasized speed and pursuit; Putting the pressure on and by maintaining fast positional adjustments; Always taking away as much as possible from the opposition; Play better with out the puck. In the NHL, which is what we're talking about, it's really high end!!! How much does coaching have to do with lower game scores? I totally agree on your point about goalies!
See for yourself! Dull and low scoring. Most if not all coaches in today's NHL know line matching, trap setting, goal prevention, cutting off ice, forcing into lousy ice. These "stratagems" are so typical of the recent post expansion's version of the NHL. I still think the NHL is the best game on earth!! So although I've seen way better eras of the NHL, I still manage to enjoy the most recent 2 decade's version of it. Too few goals and all.
Actually they did ban them in 1987. Teams get fined BIG time and the first player to leave the bench during an altercation gets an automatic 10 game suspension and the coach gets 5.
ANY goalie who played like him that playoff run was waaay overachieving. I've seen goalies make a difference but he WAS the Canucks cup run. Besides that's usually how it goes with Cinderella(no offense). Over achieved? How about Mario Lessard in 82? His team was winning games for him 10-8 and 6-5 and 7-4 all in one series. He was given a huge contract after that!!!!(Gone in a year 1/2.)King Richard however was a solid goalie year in and year out and he now and again looked liked 82. Later
Yeah, statistically 81-82 was not his best season, but the '82 playoff run was the highlight of his career. He had a very respectable career, though, and was a legitimate starting goaltender in the NHL for 7 years. He was selected for the '83 All-Star Game but was injured in the game before and missed it.
Being fair to Mario, Jerry Buss was so impressed with his team's upset over Edmonton he was put under the spell and gave him the big contract. Mario was a great goalie with awesome reflexes; Had a wicked glove. 78-thru-82 and even 83 he was good. Had to face a lot of shots with the Keystone cops for D in front of him. But in 83-84 his reflexes were gone and it was time for him to go. I'm sure he remembers that series with the Oilers though. If you followed hockey back then you won't!!
I wonder if it's the same date this year? Let's see: Easter falls on the first Sunday AFTER the first full moon AFTER the Vernal Equinox? You check the Calendar, that was rough spitting out.
Ron Sadlebar(sp?) said in 1979 when they debuted them:"They're not very pretty but they sure are ugly." I have a game worn Paul Reinhart from 88-89. Road. I also have a Dave WIlliams road V neck from 82 also game worn. I bought them before Gary Bettman(sp?) took over the league so the price was really reasonable. I LOVE MY SWEATERS!!!
I saw that series too.(ISLES FAN HERE)It wasn't an embarrassment.Game one: Jim Nill puts Vancouver up 5-4 late in a real close one.Bossy tied it-sloppy defensive mistake by the Canucks. And Harold Snepsts, god love him, handed Bossy a beautiful pass in OT.Game two- The Isles Power Play too much.Bossy was sniping.A short handed goal too for Carroll. Canucks tied 4-4 in 3rd.Isles won late, again. ARBOUR-ANGRY!They tightened up in 3 and 4.
I was thrilled and I loved it.But it wasn't easy God damn it.
Total thumbs up for this video. The year of upsets.Round I:The Nordiques over Habs, the Black Hawks over North Stars and Kings(then the biggest joke in the NHL)actually took out Edmonton in a goal-filled series.(remember the Miracle on Manchester?) I was in Vancouver in December 1981 for a game vs. Colorado. The crowd cheered for the refs when they came out and booed the Canucks when THEY came out. The mood was really bad. The team was going nowhere. Your great video takes it from there.
