If the TSA were concerned with safety they would use mans best friend as their tool. They can be trained to sniff out anything and are more accurate than any x-ray. I flew international out of Logan {Boston} 2 weeks before 9-11. I was pulled aside to the explosive screening table where a middle eastern man checked my luggage for explosives. Interesting observation -- during my most recent flight, I requested a Customer Comment Card from the TSA guy that was searching my luggage at the gate... he looked at me as if I had just arrived from Jupiter. Not only that, but I routinely pack one or two extra pairs of shoes in my carry-on bag and have NEVER been asked to remove the shoes from the suitcase to run through the X-ray separately. Why wouldn't a terrorist conceal "contraband" in shoes packed in luggage to avoid giving you the opportunity to get the clear view you say your want?
