Thanks starcitygal for taking the time to post a comment. I agree, Ellen has a great voice. Thanks drdaveduncan for taking the time to post a comment. You referred to "one and only solo album". However, what about her two other albums Spirit of St. Louis 1981 and Another Breath (1983)?
Ellen Foley was the original Defense attorney on the TV sitcom comedy Night Court before Markey Post took over. She recorded this one and only solo album then did Bat Out Of Hell with Meat Loaf. She's the female vocalist on Paradise By the Dash Board Lights.
This great song helped me to get through my break up with my boyfriend in mid 80s. I used to sing this over and over again, it was perfect at that time - and helped me to process the hurt in my heart. Very good singer indeed, I have one of her albums still (LP). Thank you for putting this in YT!
Thanks @ItsMee1965 for sharing your thoughts with us. It is interesting what one remembers about lost love and songs which were around at the time.
In my late teens (late 1970s) I was going out with a girl who had a Bee Gees cassette tape. I played it continuously in my car during the time I was going out with her. Even today when I hear certain Bee Gees' tracks, they bring back memories. Especially, as the girl in question called off our relationship.
Thanks @jeepgirlxxl for taking the time to post a reply. I am pleased to hear that you love the song. I agree, it is a great song sung by a great artist.
Ellen Foley does a good job with this song......But, the best vocal ever on this song was done by Florence (Flo) Starnes, also recorded in the 70's on the Hit and Run label ..........I'd love to hear that one again but can't find it !
Thanks @FancyGapWolf for your comments. I have not heard of Flo Starnes. I have just searched the net, but can only find minimal infor about this artist.
Thanks Mymonaro2008....... Flo was my next door neighbor for a while in Greensboro NC....She was/is married to Roger Kohrs (aka Tiny Basser). They played together up and down the East coast in the 80's. Tiny played later with the Unknown Hinson and Flo recorded with Randy Clay (Christian music). She had an incredible voice and delivery, but there is just nothing out there that I can find....I'll keep looking !
Ellen Foley did the backing vocals on 'Bat Out Of Hell' album...all of 'Nightout' is great...'We Belong To The Night' is another fav of mine from this LP...cheers thanx for the track...
Its takes alot of nerve to cover a Timi Yuro song, however Ellen Foley does Timi proud on this one. It even has that great Phil Spector Wall of Sound driving force feel to it. I love the male back-up singers in the background asking "Whats the matter baby" Timi was one of the very few performers who Frank Sinatra ever asked to open for him in his concerts. Timi was also one of Elvis's favorite singers. Not bad company huh...
Guys, guys, guys W.T.F you never heard her play on radio? WOW. I remember when i was 13 my sister bought the album and i wore the tape out as well, jim steinmann made a wise choice for paradise by the dashboard light. So many many memories in my head when i hear this simply superb

What I can't figure out is Ellen Foley was born (& perhaps raised) in St. Louis but I never hear any of her songs played on St. Louis's fave son (or daughter) KSHE95, 1 of the oldest (if not the oldest) existing rock stations in America, especially during UMan's "KSHE Klassics" show. In fact I think just about every classic rock station has neglected playing her singles on the radio. That's too bad b/c this song is "classic" imo!!
I have to agree with you about no play on radio stations. It happens here in South Australia, I can not recall hearing a Foley track on our "classic" radio stations.

Thanks TheHeidiGame for taking the time to post your comment. I agree with you, this track sounds great "really loud". Although my singing is not too good! *LOL*
Thanks MarkssexySmurf for taking the time to post your comments. I agree with you, remembering the time when the song was originally released definitely makes me feel OLD! *L* It gets me thinking about all the young girls I use to take out in my car and listening to the song. I have got older, but the girls remain young in my mind! *LOL*
Yes, I have the album as well. I remember the day I purchased it, when it had been originally released . I got to know a guy behind a counter in a record store and each Friday evening I would visit the store and the guy would suggest new records for me to listen to. As a result, I ended up buying some "alternative" lps. Another one that comes to mind was the band Sniff and the Tears.
The video of this great tune had been posted a while ago, but was unfortunately removed. Ellen's acting performance on the video was equally as good as her vocal performance, so you can imagine how good the combination was!
The record companies, e.g. WMG, are putting the heat on videos and music here on You Tube, even old ones, and getting them removed, one by one. Let them know what you think!
This brings back memories from when I was a teenager. This song sounds as good and as fresh as it did 30 years ago. What a great statement of pure pure pop romanticism this song is, and what a voice on that lassie.
Thanks bjursten for your posting. I can not but agree with your comments about Foley's voice. When I play the album (old vinyl) it always brings back memories of 1979...and all the lovely girls I knew and the hot cars I drove! I was one year past my teens!
Thanks for replying, mymonaro2008. I was sitting in my car late yesterday evening driving home from work and just started thinking about this song and thought that I would check if I could find it on youtube. I just remebered the great lyrics in the song and Ellen´s fantastic singing. "what´s a matter baby, is she hurting you": a line that anybody who´s ever had a crush on somebody in their teens can relate to. It gave me such a romantic feeling of longing for times past.
Hello bjursten, a month or so ago I had actually forgotten about the song and album in question. I was surfing around youtube I surfed on in to the the artist Timi Yuro and discovered what a great voice she had ( I had not known of Timi Yuro prior to this).
Looking at Timi Yuro's songs I found What's A Matter Baby. After listening to it several times, it struck me that I had the same song on the Ellen Foley album, packed away in the bottom of my cupboard. I do enjoy both artists' songs.
There are actually many other artists who have recorded this song. Some which are good and some which are not so good! I do have one question about the song......in places on the net it is listed as "What's A Matter Baby", whereas in other places "What's The Matter Baby", where the lyrics use "the" in place of "a". I have wondered why the lyrics and title have been changed?
Yeah, me too. I always thought the song was called "what´s the matter baby." And was surprised to see the "a" in there. I prefer Ellen´s version of the song to any other that I´ve heard. Thanks for posting it here and making it available to the rest of us.
THANK YOU THANK YOU! I was looking for this just about two weeks ago -- and SO dismayed that I couldn't find it. This was the only version I'd ever heard -- so it was cool to discover Yuro's one - but this is just so much BITCHIER and wounded -- I just love it. Can't believe finding it just now!!! This album is still just TERRIFIC -- a gem that needs to be rediscovered. Her and Genya Ravan.
Thanks cocochoca for your comments. I posted the song because I was amazed that it was not already here at youtube. Even though there are some of the other tracks from the 1979 album. I agree with you, Ellen Foley has a fantastic voice and add the instruments and one gets a great song. Saying that, I also like the version of the song by the great Timi Yuro.
I'm so very glad I could find this original v of the ellen foley version !!personally I find in it the perfect intonation, instruments and this wonderfull emotional voice about all that hurts............so very very, very good to hear!more than the triompf the song brings with it.....!I saw the live performance in the video of I guess 2009 but it missed evrything from this origenall even Ellen foley missing everything she was once,a very beautifull slimm woman...my meaning!!
