    Sincerely, David Hartley

  • @davepedalsteel the 1st time I heard this was via the Hellecasters and Jorgenson kicking up a storm...obviously a classic tune and many renditions. I love the way you can use a swell pedal as well as all the others to sneak sounds up on the ears...Sneeky Pete and all that...I can nearly get a pedal steel sound using gate and compression and a lot of string-bending.When I get it just so, I'll send you a look-see (hear say?).Very Al Perkins sounding what you do...big man hugs

  • Man you should b playing somewhere on a professional level!!! Sounds good!!!

  • You play this so well i hope you got paid by Coke.

  • THIS HAS MADE MY DAY! I went to the international pedal steel guitar convention in St Louis in 1978. There were 3 solid days of players which I recorded but no one was more appealing than this incredible clean exhibition. Effortless!

  • thank you!

  • Dave, i have been playing lead guitar for 60 years and am still working a couple jobs every week, and i have never heard a steel guitar player that has your feel for country music and is able to put that feeling into your playing as well as you do. Absolutely great.

  • Incidentally I wasn't disparaging anything about Elton John except his music...Never cared for it.

  • Hey Dave , very nice. Great sound nice transitions. Love that flying saucer and the chorus is super. You've got it brother. From a fellow musician. More! FF

  • Have you ever considered a concert at Albert Hall, Dave? If the likes of Elton John can perform there you'd be a breath of fresh air.

  • Unbelievable! So fantastic - my favorite of yours so far.

  • Dave is ' The Bomb" the best around!!!!

  • You have inspired me. I play a lot of rock guitar and it doesn't move me like that sounds that you can make with the steel.

  • DUDE!!! You are freaking nuts!! I'm going to throw my Steel in the trash now. How long have you been playing? You are beyond great!!

  • That's funny..........I came to this video interested in being inspired to take a chance on learning to play the steel, and this guy's so good, you make the humorous comment about giving up! Keep practicing!!! You'll get it!

  • you are the master!

  • It's a good thing I'm not Daves next door neighbor...he'd have to run me off with a shotgun.

  • I'm amazed. I am just starting out on steel playing. I have been playing guitar for 35 years. And i bought a decent steel guitar. But upon opening it and setting it up? I felt like someone handed me a trumpet..*&^*& I had no idea until i tried it . Its a tuff instrumant ..But i will work on it.!

  • Why have I never heard of Dave Hartley until I found him on YouTube?? This guy should be famous anywhere country music is played, danced to or heard. I've heard a LOT of very good, some famous steel players and he's the best I've ever heard...bar none.

  • Man some hot stuff, love the way you do the whistle of the train...especially the distant one

  • this is truly one of my favorite videos.

  • you outta move to nashville and be a studio musician. this level of pedal steel is highly coveted.

  • Mr. Hartley, you are simply amazing. Your are absolutely (hands down) the best on the pedal steel, especially so with the Orange Blossom Special

  • Wonder if I could play that on electric guitar? Probably not. Just too cool!!

  • You are absolutely wonderful to say the least. I was planning on learning to play the lead guitar but now after watching you play I may choose to learn how to play the steel guitar instead. I love the sound. Great job!! Dan

  • As a Dutch guy, living in Thailand, I enyoy the music you made on your steelgitar, and as far I can see you have a lot equipment to make this posseble. Thanks!!

  • Excellent! I'd also love to hear your version of "The Steel Guitar Rag" someday.

    Jim

  • Hi Dave I like it

this version is even better than your first one.

    keep on playing !

    gerry

  • I'm with "ConVivo".....unbelievable is right! And you make it look so easy. Flawless technique doesn't even begin to express the beauty of your playing. This is one helluva video, one of the best steel guitar vids on You Tube.

    No way to "rate" this!

  • Awesome and my favorite song too

  • Absolutely fabulous Dave. You stuck with the melody throughout the entire tune instead of trying speed picking with tunings that have nothing to do with the melody. Once again, 10 out 10

  • Awesome picking! That's the way a steel ought to sound when played by someone who makes the instrument come alive. Love your videos.

    Jaxon

  • I just love that sound!

  • straight up good stuff!! sounds a little like Dukes background music...

  • wow man, amazing

  • This is a truly amazing version of this tune, on what must be a difficult instrument to master as well as this. This is one that is now in my favourite list. Well done Dave.

    WE

  • I have heard some of the finest players around.. I have got to say that you are unFRIGGIN" believable. Thanks for the entertainment. You are superior partner!!!

  • Amazing Dave. You are a treat to listen to.

  • WOW!!!!! HE IS GOOD never heard Orange Blosson Special played that way.

  • The first one was good, especially technically. This one is even better; it's got a little more Bakersfield "soul" in it. Thank you, Dave, for sharing your wonderful talent with all of us!

  • Thanks Dave,A rare treat of excellence on the most difficult instriment in the world to master.I know because i play one.........well done/

    JDB N. Carolina USA

  • wow David you are great. you shud play inn full time. you are the best.

    Bjørn.

    Norway

  • I don't understand why this chap isn't a household name here in the USA. He could be a very highly paid session musician on the Country circuit. He's the best I've ever heard. Put a Stetson on him and some snakeskin boots, and there you have it.

  • WOW!

  • Amazing stuff!!! Awesome!!

  • Awesome. I love a great steel guitar, and this is truely great. and thats an understatement

  • Dave, "Are you kidding me" The best steel version of Orange blossom special I have ever heard. I thought I had heard the best but now I say you are the best. Incredible.

  • I think also.

  • Wow that is incredible, so smooth!!!!! Love the wild train whistle Terrific!!!

  • I love your tech neat your broking is great if you make cd's please let no I will buy them. St Petersburg Fl

  • Ya can't get that good, without knowing you're that good! :c) Have you ever thought about selling CD's, I.e., instrumentals? I'd sure buy one, or two, ...!

  • you are awesome :|

  • Dave, this is excellent, very professionnal. Congratulations.

  • The train noise is simple, but clever. He puts the steel across the strings at a bit of an angle, around 17-19 fret, with volume pedal off. He drags the thumbpick across all the lower strings together, then immediately fades up the audio, and plays with the pitch by taking the bar down gently. Worked a treat on my Carter first time I saw it! I'd never have worked it out without the video though! :-) The guy's a genius.

  • Dave, I just purchased a Sho bud double neck pedal steel yesterday, 1-12-08. Never played one before but with the grace of God, maybe I'll get lucky and learn it. After seeing this video of you and the orange blossom special I HAD TO HAVE ONE! Question...that train sound you make on lower E-string, is that generated somehow through a box or are you just doing it with the strings and pedal? Thanks.

  • There`s nothing like an expert on

a pedal steel and man, you are one.

  • man, you are awesome...im in the us army and going to the middle east. im takin this to remind me of what good music actually sounds like..thanks for the steel guitar rag...I saw Leon Mcauliffe play it in Pawnee,Oklahoma when I was 5. One of the best songs ever recorded...you are an incredible player boss!...thanks and keep it up please...hopefully one day you will have a cd for sale...Again thanks from a us army cowboy!

  • Very good.

  • He makes it look EZ. But' it ain't. GGGGGGGGreat!!

  • Super sound of your Rains Dave, send up more

hot stuff we love it, and take a trip over

    to Norway.

    Happy New Year.
