@davepedalsteel the 1st time I heard this was via the Hellecasters and Jorgenson kicking up a storm...obviously a classic tune and many renditions. I love the way you can use a swell pedal as well as all the others to sneak sounds up on the ears...Sneeky Pete and all that...I can nearly get a pedal steel sound using gate and compression and a lot of string-bending.When I get it just so, I'll send you a look-see (hear say?).Very Al Perkins sounding what you do...big man hugs

The train noise is simple, but clever. He puts the steel across the strings at a bit of an angle, around 17-19 fret, with volume pedal off. He drags the thumbpick across all the lower strings together, then immediately fades up the audio, and plays with the pitch by taking the bar down gently. Worked a treat on my Carter first time I saw it! I'd never have worked it out without the video though! :-) The guy's a genius.
