Guantanamera means the gril from Guantanamo (Cuba). The lyrics belong to José Martí (poet and political leader of the Cuban independence from Spain). The take off of this song is 1929 and at the beginning was considered a rural style song. Now is universal and it has many versions adapting to many Cuban cities, changin Guantanamera for Santiaguera, vueltabajera, Camagüeyana, etc...

I am surprised at comments made with little research about the subject.The song Guantanamera was written by a Cuban not a Mexican.His name: Jose Fernandez.

This singer does a creditable job with this song and his spanish (believe it or not)is much clearer than some of the "latino" singers that have performed this song.Some of

them (latino singers) sound like they are

"chewing gum" when they sing it.

Jose Fernandez "supposedly" wrote it around 1929.When it became popular on the radio the Cuban pianist Herminio Garcia claimed the he wrote the music.Not until 1993!the Cuban Supreme Court gave Fernandez the credit.

He was to have been "romantically involved" with a woman from Guantanamo who left him.

Cuban Poet(and Hero)Jose Marti inspired some

of the verses out of "Versos Sencillos".
