@MikiFerrandino i agree i went to work in one of the bases for the entire summer

and i garantee you when you step off the base you will be shocked (and embarassed) as to how much space the americans take compared to japanese!! there are entire open fields where nothing lies compared to japanese where everything is so crammed together maybe it is a cultural thing to not take up so much space but seeing as the americans are the guest you would thing they would follow the cultural norm...

Wow! Thanks for this. I lived in Okinawa from the late 70s to the early 80s, 4 yrs total, and have been dying to go back for ages now. Some of my best childhood memories are of Okinawa, the people, friends, and my first experience in martial arts - Shorin Ryuu Karate. Can't wait to see it all again and how it's changed.

I´m going to Japan next week. Do you now how much it cost to fly from Tokyo to Okinawa? I have a friend that lives there. i saw on a site that it cost like 900 dollar to fly to Okinawa and back to Tokyo. I can only be there for at most 4 days so it´s not worth it if it cost that much.

I have been to Kyushu but never been to Okinawa. I hear it is a beautiful place. I would love to visit there one day. Okinawa has a rich culture and history. It's also the origin of Japanese Karate.

Have you been to Nijima? It's one of the islands off Tokyo and a cute little island. It's popular among surfers.

I am a dolphin trainer in Orlando Florida and we have a type of whale common to Japan called a "false killer whale" . I lived in Japan for 6 months but missed Okinawa :( Thanks for sharing! I also learned recently that Kenichi Matsuyama ("L" of death note) played a dolphin trainer in a movie called "Dolphin Blue" based on a true story about a dolphin named Fuji at Okinawa aquarium who lost his tail fluke and had a prosthetic one made. Do you know about Fuji?
