Decent performance... perhaps mic placement is to blame, but woodwinds drown out trumpets in the fugue section. Sorry for being so critical but this is my favorite Claude T. Smith piece. If I have to hear Emperata Overture again I will slit my wrist. LOL
@ ericgsant92 there's a reason why there's a BAND: so you can hide among the rest of the band. But, when you have a solo, they are testing to see if they can weed out the good but weak.
This year the Central Methodist Band, which debuted this piece in 1977, will be performing this again at the Missouri Music Educators Conferance with the director being a saxaphonist in the debut band
I have scaring memories of playing the bassoon solo at Arkansas All-State back in the seventies. I remember the first reading, and the conductor, Gene Witherspoon, looked at me and said, "Well, that was pretty pathetic." Nevertheless, I love the piece.
@watki005 I'm the principal bassoon player in Texas A&M's concert band and I nearly shat my pants upon the first read of that solo. A million sharps + odd rythms = OMGWTF!
30 years ago, I was a snare drum play with China Youth Symphonic Wind Orchestra located in Taiwan, this piece, Joyance, was one of our flavorist piece. We perform this song very often. Now this let me remember those old, beautiful days. Thank you for posting this song.
Back in the day in PA, I did the whole All-State, etc., DCA, etc. I know I'm very happy that the torch is being carried on in low brass with young people like yourself as it was given to me. It's something wonderful you can always walk with for your entire life regardless of which career you take. 8)
Glad to. 8) I'm a Euphonium player who dabbles in tuba- solid work, fine band. I played this in 1979, I think it's a work by Claude that doesn't get the attention it richly deserves. I had the opportunity to play under Claude in 1980. A beautiful, kind, gentle man. His music is very like him. When I found out he died unexpectedly in 1987-88, I was in the teacher's room- had to fight back the tears. Nice run from the Euphonium at the end, it's not easy. 8)
I hear my part yay GO TUBA!!!! lol nice job, articulation, tone and the speed is amazing!

Very nice rendition of my favorite Claude T. Smith piece. I forgive the timing issue at the very end between chimes and xylophone.
