I remember the R40 slants as a kid on The F line. We would see them when we headed out to Lincoln HS to run around the track. I always thought they were so cool, and didn't understand why the Brighton Beach Line (than served by the Q(express) and D(local)) didn't have them. Thanks to the founder of nycsubway, I learned that the slant design was intended to help make the train look modern (eh, futuristic?) but that went out the door with the addition of gates and chains for safety.
I like the RED BIRDS, but I like it when it ran on the C line. The trains were greatly improved from earlier. Acceleration, but stopping speed was squeaky.
My number 1 subway car of all time is the R38's. I liked the acceleration of these trains and the stopping distance. They are know to stop on a dime. My second choice is the R40 slants. They have incredible downgrade speeds (even greater than the R'38s). R46 is the most improve train of all time. They also give a more smoother ride. R68B that is used by the "Q" train come up as #4. 32's and 42's and box 40's are all on the same playing field to me. The 32's are airy sounding.
@legobrickbreaker101 the 6 ran redbirds and r62a's 1985-2002 it was half and half by the way starting fall of 2011 the 6 is getting the r62a back due to the mta taking the 6s r142a for the 7s r188 order its gonna be r142a's
and 1 car in the end as a c car and the 4 is getting 80 sets of r62a cause it has 80 r142a with cbtc kits already
so the r62a once again dont start arriving until fall of 2011 to the 6 hope this helps
I agree with R44/46, R68 & R32. But R40/R40M? These were the worst cars ever used. Uncomfortable seats and less of them. R160s are no improvement. Even less seats (40), annoying auto announcements, station announcements by people who can't pronounce the station names correctly (Sheeps Head [two words!] Bay, DeK"ah"lb Ave,). Greatest cars were the IND R1-R9s. Easily seen destination signs, cross-seating instead of longitudenal, comfortable seats instead of hard ones, and the most seats: 56!
The R44 trains suck, no one uses the seats fully, because you are trapped to the inside seat and have to ask someone to move in order to get out. The staggered layout of the poles is also a flaw, it makes you have to walk in a zig zag line in order to get past.
yeah, the seats are so uncomfortable, how did they even pass the testing? thats true though, the r160 killed the E,N,Q,J,M,Z,W,F,and L lines. Anyway, do u know when the r40 is gonna be in the transit museum?
My real top 5 are #5 R40, #4R32, #3 R68, #2 R142/A and #1 R62/A. I think thats my top 5. Answer.

Sorry--I go back to the days of the HI-V cars on the IRT and the R-1 cars on the IND. The new cars simply do not compare.

I like the R44/R46/R68 design the best. For New York cars I prefer the big
letter in the front window [vs over the end door]. For other cities including
here in Chicago I prefer destination signs over the end door.

My #1 train is and will always be the R32. I loved to play with the rollsigns for entertainment when on the E going into Manhattan.
My least fav is the R40. Slants=dangerous.

THE R46, R44, R68, R143, and R160 are all obese trains that grew too wide which is way their the ugliest trains of the NYC subway

R143, sucks its one of the trains that are killing the goodness of the NYC subway
Redbirdfan33 2 years ago
actually thats the r160 thats killing the nyc subway, not the r143
ks10308 2 years ago
true the R143 only killed the L line, while the R160 killed the E,N,Q,J,M,Z,W,F,and L lines
Redbirdfan33 2 years ago

ks10308 2 years ago
i meant to say, do u know how long the r40 is going to stay at the transit museum?
ks10308 2 years ago
not sure. im pretty sure they put r40 in there to replace the R1/R9s they used for the nostalgia train
Redbirdfan33 2 years ago
they wouldn't pass testing on the IRT lines since there obese design prevents them from traveling on those lines
Redbirdfan33 2 years ago
alright thanks, i was thinking about going to the museum this week since i have off this week. i am so taking a mugshot with the r40
ks10308 2 years ago
no its not... the bad cars are the R40-44 killing the A line
koolmazin 2 years ago
R U kidding me? The r40-44 are the best subway cars for me, but thats ur opinion.
