@deadreck024 . lol congratulations you are a moron. Have you even seen any of his work? the amount of research and care he's taken to bring people facts? It's a rhetorical question. Moronic answers are invalid.
People need both postive and negative liberty - i advocate the resource based economy, which provides more negative liberty than ever before. At the same time has very postive greater than ones self goals of creating abundance to satisfy all wants and needs. To make wealth as common as air and to do it sustainably through clean energy the most advanced technologys and productive and distribution processes that are known, but suppressed as abundance is unprofitable. see zeitgeist moving forward
Adam Curtis must really dig Brian Eno; here's he's using "On Some Faraway Beach," from his first LP, and on the "Power of nightmares" he used a song from Another Green World.
You have only to listen carefully to the politicians to realise they think we are all TWATS, and by using certain trigger words they can manipulate our responses to the ones they require.
Sadly, thats spot on with most of our un-thinking fellow citizens. - Thats why it :works! . Soon you may not dare to express an unfashionable opinion. Sooner than you may think. :-(
@PrometheanRunGood His use of music, visual technique and language is clearly exploitative. Also considering that the majority of his conclusions are not backed up by facts, but by long winded rhetoric and I just refuse to believe any of it.
Again, he makes some good (poetic) points on freedom, but it really is drivel pandering to a libertarian mindset.
@miyamoopen Where do you get "mad" out of it? I agree, it just sounds like you disagree with his politics. Explain to me how you cite sources in a documentary. Footnotes? He makes a helluva lot more effective an argument than your sneering.
@terminalpictures evidence in a historically based documentary is in the use of thorough contextualising.
my point is that he does not provide any substantial context, and instead jumps from scenario to scenario using emotive rhetoric. yes he makes good arguments, but that's all they come down to. they're convincing because they are presented in such a way (through my pre-mentioned editing techniques) NOT because of any substantial evidence.
@miyamoopen i think one shouldnt take such a format entirely serious, but it might be a good starting point for a more thourough thought process. in the end it's just television, but let's face it: very good television.

this leftist's idea of "positive freedom" is just another word for communism. it suggests that those who work overtime to get ahead will willingly do the same if most of the fruit of their effort goes to others. there are some people in the world who do this, notably missionaries and lower level clergy, but most people would not. that's why pol pot ended up slaughtering most of the educated, capable people of cambodia.

Not sure about the "zionist" bit but I agree 100% with you about how the political monolithic military/pharmaceutical machine, that now runs the US, Britain and most of the "civilised world", has us by the balls.
I'm all for getting as far away from their idea of freedom as possible.
No one can give you freedom, it has to be a personal act of self discovery and courage to regain your liberty by following your own responsibility and truth.
Judging from the intro...and his past work...I don't think Adam Curtis goes to the heart of the matter. "they" don't want freedom....the two class system is no accident....Carrol Quiqley said it plainly....."they" desire a return to a feudal caste system. The talk of freedom is a cover.
I'm not so sure. History is full of societies being led up the garden path by people who did honestly believe that they were doing the right thing.....
You know the world has come full circle since the french revolution when the word freedom is used to promote and establish the most insidious and barbaric form of slavery in history.
We live in a dystopic nightmare where you cannot trust anyone and everyone is the enemy of everyone else. Every form of human interaction has been abolished and replaced by commerce. We don't even know what it is to be free or human anymore.
It remains to be seen if we will ever escape this trap.
What the hell is wrong with freedom? That's what it's all about.
Oh, yeah, that's right. That's what's it's all about, all right. But talkin' about it and bein' it, that's two different things. I mean, it's real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace. Of course, don't ever tell anybody that they're not free, 'cause then they're gonna get real busy killin' and maimin' to prove to you that they are.
Ok. Who didn't at least chuckle when Bing Crosby comes out and "F*ck You, Buddy." comes on the screen. That said. Check out "Century of the Self" BBC doc also by Adam Curtis (that's how I found "The Trap") Go to google video, watch 'Century' in 4 one hour epsiodes. All I can say is, we are all on a game show and don't even know it. Hoopla, pandering, false senses of loss and gain. From 1930's onward.
we are "liberated" as long as we dont disagree with the power structure. I served in Vietnam 1968-69; 60,000 of us died for THAT outright lie; I am praying GOD comes down to earth in 2012 and punishes the SCUM running the world today; it cant get much worse...I dont vote...WHY bother?
"I place economy among the first and most important virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers. To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt."
- Thomas Jefferson
The neocons have FAILED our country by racking up a 10 trillion dollar national debt, a 400 billion dollar trade deficit and undermined our economy by allowing massive numbers of jobs to be shipped overseas.
Could it be any more clear that Obama is the RIGHT choice?
The neocons fraudulent economic policies have brought us: - perpetual war with other nations - 10 trillion dollar national debt - 400 billion dollar trade deficit - Massive monopoly building (ignoring the Sherman Anti-monopoly Act) - Absurdly high CEO compensation and rewards - even for failure! - financial deregulation causing the mortgage crisis - 5.7% jobless rate and countless jobs shipped overseas - media campaign of fear to suppress the masses Vote for Change! Vote Obama 08!
Under McCain's version of Piñata Politics, the senator and his team swing wildly in every direction, hoping to hit Barack Obama. There's no real consistency to the attacks -- and there's even less honesty and integrity backing up the attack. But McCain appears to be blindfolded, allowing Karl Rove's operation to spin him in circles. It's clear that McCain is just parroting to what he is told to say, and is not in control of his OWN campaign! The neocons have him under control!
What is your favorite Obama policy? It's amazing how many Obama supporters when asked this question have no idea and will just reiterate the change rhetoric. Maybe they have no idea because Obama has no idea. I don't like McCain much either, but that doesn't mean Obama is correct by default. If you want meaningful changes, take a look at the Liberatarian party or Constitution party.
One important change that MUST occur and that Obama proposes is to raise taxes on the those making over $250K back up to at least the Regan first term level while giving the poorest Americans some tax relief. We must start dealing with the massive national debt which was largely caused by reduction of taxes on the wealthy. Capital gains being only 15% right now has also contributed imensely to the debt. Capital gains also needs to be put back up to 28% as during Regan.
Now, most people think that rasing taxes (even though only 5% of Americans would actually have their taxes rasies is a bad thing. But, you cannot FIX what is wrong with our government, and what it spends money on by not FUNDING the programms that have been approved, but instead borrow that money from our childrens futures. The debt is so big now due to the fraudulent economic policies of the neocons over the past 28 years that we have a SUPER mess now.
And, by the way, I used to be a Libertarian for several years and am very much in agreement with many of the Libertarian views. I switched to democrat to be able to vote in the primaries in my state for the obvious reason that, at least this time in history, no third party candidate has anywhere NEAR the numbers to defeat McCain which is paramount in my opinion. I will still advocate for the DEM's to adopt Libertarian points of view were ever possible.
Obama is more right wing than Bush - he's just another representative of the same elitists who precide over a totalitarian system posing as a democracy - What was left of the US Constitution was killed off with Patriot Acts 1&2 - Until there is honest money and real democratic representation there will be serfdom, subservience and wars for the benefit of the few - People need to wake up.
I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying, but I really wish you would stop using the tired left/right metaphor for politics. American politics has become so illogical with regard to conservative and liberal policies and their practice that using this metaphor only further serves to obscure any sentiment of truth.
WestPhillyCat i.m.o the scam is still as simple as that. Politics is a side show to occupy the masses and lend weight to the illusion of democracy - Until you have a sound monetary system there will be no democracy. Wilson 'unwittingly' sold out America to the bankers - the masses are too befuddled to see the scam of fiat money for what it is - The Fed is privately owned - who controls the monetary supply controls key resources, the media, educational system & politicians - game over.
zyby, it seems to me that part of the problem is that they've created systems (Federal Reserve, Electoral College) that not only insulate power from the masses and true democracy but is also so systemically complex that it cannot be understood by most people. I like that you're making the effort to understand our nation and how it actually works rather than how our postcard civics books tell us how it works.
My fav is the taxing of the super rich. I also like his retirement plan, which isn't profound but sill good. His view on abortion is good as in being prochoice but making attempts to discourage it while encouraging thorough sex ed and birth control. Hes in complete support for net neutrality which, If I am not mistaken, McCain is not for. OBAMA 08!!
- financial deregulation causing the mortgage crisis - 4-year high 5.7% jobless rate and countless jobs shipped overseas - media campaign of fear to suppress the masses Vote for Change! Vote Obama 08!
Leftists have lost any interest in "liberation" for the downtrodden and are ONLY interested in POWER these days. The fact that leftist stooges support Islamism is an indication of how power-insane they are! They don't actually LIKE it, but as long as it can be used as tool to wrestle power from the capitalists, then the left will EMBRACE it! Listen to the left..."my presccccious....give me my PRESCIOOOUSSSEEEE!" Stalin meets Golem...SICK!

The Trap deserve 2 receive extensive public attention. Whether one agrees with parts of it or not, the issues it explores are real. Not just commercially sponsored fluff designed 2 distract and 2 misinform. Of course it relies upon rhetorical and anecdotal material. The complexities of the subject make it impossible 2 simply take an EZ 2 understand, literal "snapshot" of the phenomena 2 which it refers.
Feel free to view additional, edgy observations at the my website URL.
Ok fine, we might not all agree on the substance of the examples he gives, or on the motives of such substances.
It might seem lightweight for some (including me) and doesn't move into specific theories of calculated motives and agendas to reach specific results. (see other doco's by him and also others).
Its most definitely better than nothing, and is very likely to be quite alarming or invoke denial is most.
Its biggest flaw is that Curtis tries to tell a narrative story, which warps the timescale of the whole thing.
Most notably he portrays the collapse of Pinochet as a minor incident. In fact the collapse of Pinochet led to a strong left wing government in Chile. Whilst the media focusses on Chavez, they ignore the other left wing governments that have arisen from the ashes of American capitalist intervention
batista, the shah, marcos and pinochet needed to go, the problem was that no one made sure that their replacements would bring pluralistic democracy. the people were betrayed because they ended up with single party states again.
it has been a long painful process, but the people of the world have been gaining their freedom over the last century by fits and starts, two steps forward one back, and the US has been more of a positive contributer to that change than any other nation.
No paranoia is the mechanism leading to desire and catalyst for entry into safe psychological and physical regions that will be provided. Entertainment is one such example. From the isolated regions of your physical being, you can be entertained and safe. It makes for a very malleable individual.
Individuals become donkeys and freedom is the carrot.
that opening montage(i know it's all montage, but) allied to the music, and strangely retro sounding voice-over,as if that could be "found audio",from "World in Action" or something, stitched in...the zoom to the apartment, the spookily evocative movement of a marionette, juxtaposed to the "mock-authoratative" swagger of Dubya, then to the solace of the hospital bed pillow, cool and reassuring... the pillow part reminds me of the opening of "Mulholland Drive"...thanks for the link 1916dc...
Youtube has taken down the majority of THE TRAP that had taken so much time to put up. The best thing to do is to watch it on google video, search term 'sitruc'
Who knows? There's another person who has all episodes posted and they haven't touched his stuff. Maybe it's because I didn't shell out the money to have Director status.
my main page here on youtube has a link to a site that contains all three episodes from google video. or just go to google video and type in the keyword 'sitruc'
Superb. Adam Curtis's urgent documentaries blow the lid off spin with insight and panache. Check out PANDORA'S BOX if you can. If not, check THE POWER OF NIGHTMARES. Stunning.
Amazing stuff. I only caught the last ten minutes of this on tv the other night because my bloody tv channels disappeared at the last minute (thank you NTL for once again ruining my evening). Can someone upload the whole episode? I want to see it before next week's installment!
typing 'the trap' into any torrent search engine found via google will give a result - I'm not sure of the BBC's stand on downloading torrents of its shows so you'd have to check that out first obviously

Thatcher made ego all; freedom as a con, for human progression needs the civilised self to draw lines at instinct.
Laissez-faire has less to do with self-respect, more with destructive forces to achieve narrow life-goals.
Ending the Cold War made the idea of an ego-driven sort of freedom "good" and all else "evil" - an either/or load o' bollocks.
Reagan/Thatcher gave us only this: folk as materialistic engines chugging away in service to Bernays' elite machine. He scorned democratic ideals.

This film states the obvious and it also begs the question, What period in history would Curtis rather be living in?
The world has always been fucked, it's just getting a little bit less fucked as time passes.

It remains to be seen if we will ever escape this trap.
truefakeness 2 years ago 2
Agree,
None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe are free.
golcynski 2 years ago
What the hell is wrong with freedom? That's what it's all about.
Oh, yeah, that's right. That's what's it's all about, all right. But talkin' about it and bein' it, that's two different things. I mean, it's real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace. Of course, don't ever tell anybody that they're not free, 'cause then they're gonna get real busy killin' and maimin' to prove to you that they are.
walkingbear56 2 years ago
Oh, yeah, they're gonna talk to you, and talk to you, and talk to you about individual freedom. But they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em.
Well, it don't make 'em runnin' scared.
No, it makes 'em dangerous. Buh, neh! Neh! Neh! Neh! Swamp!

DominationCorp -
One important change that MUST occur and that Obama proposes is to raise taxes on the those making over $250K back up to at least the Regan first term level while giving the poorest Americans some tax relief. We must start dealing with the massive national debt which was largely caused by reduction of taxes on the wealthy. Capital gains being only 15% right now has also contributed imensely to the debt. Capital gains also needs to be put back up to 28% as during Regan.
brentj30 3 years ago
DominationCorp -
Now, most people think that rasing taxes (even though only 5% of Americans would actually have their taxes rasies is a bad thing.

Obama is more right wing than Bush - he's just another representative of the same elitists who precide over a totalitarian system posing as a democracy - What was left of the US Constitution was killed off with Patriot Acts 1&2 - Until there is honest money and real democratic representation there will be serfdom, subservience and wars for the benefit of the few - People need to wake up.
zyby 3 years ago 2
I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying, but I really wish you would stop using the tired left/right metaphor for politics. American politics has become so illogical with regard to conservative and liberal policies and their practice that using this metaphor only further serves to obscure any sentiment of truth.
WestPhillyCat 3 years ago
WestPhillyCat i.m.o the scam is still as simple as that. Politics is a side show to occupy the masses and lend weight to the illusion of democracy - Until you have a sound monetary system there will be no democracy. Wilson 'unwittingly' sold out America to the bankers - the masses are too befuddled to see the scam of fiat money for what it is - The Fed is privately owned - who controls the monetary supply controls key resources, the media, educational system & politicians - game over.
zyby 3 years ago 3
zyby, it seems to me that part of the problem is that they've created systems (Federal Reserve, Electoral College) that not only insulate power from the masses and true democracy but is also so systemically complex that it cannot be understood by most people.

OBAMA 08!!

Adam Curtis is doing great work.
Thanks for posting the video.

An excellent documentary... but
Its biggest flaw is that Curtis tries to tell a narrative story, which warps the timescale of the whole thing.
Most notably he portrays the collapse of Pinochet as a minor incident. In fact the collapse of Pinochet led to a strong left wing government in Chile. Whilst the media focusses on Chavez, they ignore the other left wing governments that have arisen from the ashes of American capitalist intervention
Aristocles2 4 years ago
batista, the shah, marcos and pinochet needed to go, the problem was that no one made sure that their replacements would bring pluralistic democracy. the people were betrayed because they ended up with single party states again.
it has been a long painful process, but the people of the world have been gaining their freedom over the last century by fits and starts, two steps forward one back, and the US has been more of a positive contributer to that change than any other nation.

Yes...
Papachair 4 years ago
Just a response to DGI1983,
No paranoia is the mechanism leading to desire and catalyst for entry into safe psychological and physical regions that will be provided. Entertainment is one such example. From the isolated regions of your physical being, you can be entertained and safe. It makes for a very malleable individual.
Individuals become donkeys and freedom is the carrot.
Constrained, but free?!
Hope I was clear.

that opening montage(i know it's all montage, but) allied to the music, and strangely retro sounding voice-over,as if that could be "found audio",from "World in Action" or something, stitched in...the zoom to the apartment, the spookily evocative movement of a marionette, juxtaposed to the "mock-authoratative" swagger of Dubya, then to the solace of the hospital bed pillow, cool and reassuring... the pillow part reminds me of the opening of "Mulholland Drive"...thanks for the link 1916dc...
