They did a perfect job, A PERFECT JOB, in selecting these opening songs.

Season 1 had an immensily oppressive and sinister "no way out of this hell" kind of song. The season has little more than repeating death and suffering.

Season 2 has a song that gives a feel of overall sadness, EVERY character is in some way broken, but there is a way out. A very hard-to-get way, but still. And we are given a primary protagonist and a primary antagonist.

I remember watching the first three episodes of this show and thinking "Well this is cool! A murder mystery? I can totally get into this!" Then I watched episode four and thought "OH MY FUCKING GOD THEY'RE ALL DEAD" Then I watched episode five and thought "What the hell? What's going on? They're all dead! Is this heaven!?" Then I kept watching... and it all made sense! Sort of.

I just finished season 1 and 2 and they dont die at all. Didnt realize that Takano was the main enemy and that the only way rika and her friends could win against fate Hanyuu finally decides to join in and Rika does end up growing up and changing Takano's fate. Currently watching the OVA episodes and so far Rika screws up and gets killed in episode 2.

if you watched the last episode, the great hinamizara disaster still occurs. All the killings never happened. Rika mentions to keiichi that theres a "Dark World" connected to the regular world when the aliens crashed and infected the villagers with a alien parasite when Rena knew about keiichi's dark past.

Yea when I first watched it I was like WTF cause of the different story arcs. I was completely thrown off throughout all of season 1 until season 2 and the OVA is funny.

Those were alternate story lines. All of Season 1 was based on 5 story arcs and the last one is where season 2 picks up from. Im currently watching episode 5 of season 2 and I love Higurashi! Best anime I've seen since FLCL and Elfen Lied.

Unless you mean the beginning of Season 2 where Ooichi meets up with Rena to find out about the Great Hinamizara Disaster, then yes from what it seems all except Rena died.

Ok yesh but who survived then? i saw season 1 and the deaths look Satoko died Rika, Rena, i think Keiichi because he was in the phone booth and i saw blood in it so i thought he died shion died mion and the anime just screwed up badly they come back alive in season 2 and 3 which is good!^^ but season 1 confused me

This is one of the best openings I've seen..Like really good, the lyrics fit very well too...I like how it starts calm and then starts to cry out for help :)
