@maxschang1 Yes, i recall reading that Barney liked his string action very high, which is so rare for jazzers.
George Benson has his strings right on the frets! (ha ha!) Barney was one of the few jazz guitarists who bent his strings, obviously a habit from his rock'n'roll session days with Elvis.
He had a wry sense of humour. I do miss his playing alot.
i saw barney in the llangollen jazz festival in the 80s when i was just a kid. what a guy. he let my dad take a picture of me and my brother with him. . and what a musician. so much groove
Barney...So much drive..energy..groove..He is still my greatsest inspiration..I was lucky enough to meet him and Herb Ellis..one time many years ago...at the Sydney Town Hall after one of their concerts...I`m still STARSTRUCK..!!
Absolutely right!! Remember that Eddie Lang's and Joe Venuti's recordings were very influential in Reinhardt and Grappelli, respectively. And every jazz guitarrist after Django plays Nuages and Seven Come Eleven, and I'm sure the great George Van Eps too!!

I suppose using the pick on the guitar is a bit like playing the piano with two fingers, or a vibraphone with a single mallet? It can be done wonderfully by the experts, but what a lot of wasted effort and fluffed notes along the way...
Any gypsy jazz Oklahomans here want to jam sometime?Just a note,I live a few blocks away from where Barney did,and he is underappreciated here. Not appreciated or remembered at all actually.its a shame
They're all great, but this is the best I've ever seen Barney play. He's quite young here, but I enjoyed his single note playing as opposed to his later years when he did more chordal stuff. He was a Charlie Christian disciple in the truest sense, & that's where his roots lay.
Great solo, great player. Notice how high he was bending those strings at around 57 seconds!

his tone is wicked sick. such a groovy tune.

Anyone complaining about the tone should understand that many did not have a clue about how to record guitar in those days.

I've seen and played that guitar. Strings were impossibly high and heavy. He liked it like that . Really hard to play. He was great. Bless him !!!

I think maybe taken a little toooo fast...Barney's best at swingin' mid-tempo tunes where he doesn't trip over his fingers trying to play like Tal

That first vamp sounds pretty much like Finnish black metal meets the stones.

But some of his licks sound a little bit like rockabilly. Well, everything comes from Django and Charlie Christian...

@OscarPetersonFan Eddie Lang too dude, Eddie Lang...
George Van Eps is also a favorite, but a different style, not as influential as Django and Christian (and previously Lang), I agree.
