  • "Perfectly formed little gifts".. spot on

  • Charlie has one thing that makes hima great critic, he's honest. Thanks Charlie for making this may all your troubles be little ones.

  • I hope Charlie is remembered as well as this.

  • Such a wonderful tribute, to the great Oliver Postgate, man I've only got Bagpuss & the clangers series 1 on DVD :( but I got them in a boxset out of my local Co-op for £5.99 :), still looking for Ivor the engine on DVD tho :/

  • To this day, I can still perform the Professor Yaffle impression I have been working on for the last 38 years.

This is truly a beautiful tribute to a wonderful storyteller.

  • wow, can you imagine any kids tv nowadays opening with words as well written and intelligent as the clip from the clangers in this vid? Kids tv nowadays treats kids like theyre all hyper ADHD lunatics. This still was so mellow and lovely. Like it stimulates a kids intelligence rather than just numbing them with explosions and pocket monsters or whatever

  • @an1m4l I was with you until you started bashing Pokemon.

    Pokemon was amazing!

  • @Sindre1 if it makes you feel better, i actually loved pokemon too. Sadly, i was like 20 when pokemon came out tho. Sad...

  • @an1m4l Its ok.

I am 21 now, and I still love it.

But long time since I watched it now.

  • :')

  • A unique personality and presence all of its own......And that's what's missing from almost everything on TV nowadays - And they wonder why it's dying.

  • And now I'm tearing up over Bagpuss. Damn it all.

  • Ben 10 is the Beiber Equivalent to s*** cartoons which throws a bad influence on our kids (just one of many), and it's bad to even use as a comparison.

  • I saw this as it went out and still remember being stunned that Charlie Brooker, who I enjoyed as an acerbic and cynical denigrator of much of TVs output should turn round and devote half his programme to a warm and eloquent tribute. t

Thanks to Charlie for such a selfless act to celebrate the creations of the gentle and brilliant Oliver Postgate.

And thanks to Dangale for posting it here

  • Great point about the sounds - I teach kindergarten kids in Japan and find myself doing 'pshhh-ti-cff' whenever I move the kids in a line :)

I'd so love to introduce my 'Thomas'-loving students to Ivor the Engine.

A lovely tribute to a man who made lovely memories for so many.

  • Awww man I almost shed a tear during this. That was lovely.

  • Fond warm memories, thank you so much Oliver Postegate.

  • One of the kindest and most sincere tributes I have ever seen.

Oliver Postgate should have received a knighthood for his services to childrens television. Imagine the millions of tiny people (and adults) he kept happy with all those 5 or 10 minute masterpieces.

  • Postgate - pure class.

  • My favorite part was Charlie'sline, "These are the sound that I hear in my own head when I remember my own childhood and Oliver Postgate put them there"

Just that makes me feel really warm inside.

  • @Smithereen1 Too right.

  • This made me teary-eyed when i watched this ;_;

  • All I can say is what others before me have said. Still brings tears to my eyes even after its original broadcast. Brooker can make you split your sides and share your empathy over something he hates and make you feel engrossed or teary eyed and genuinely moved when he talks about something he loves.

  • Even though it was somewhat before my time, I grew up on VHSs of Noggin the Nog, and even now as an adult they still take me back to a warm fuzzy soothing place. It's all about the voice.

  • Whoever gave this a thumbs down is a dick.

  • if god had a voice, it would be oliver postgates!!!:)

  • Oliver Postgate is my hero

  • I love Charlie's mean and cynical outlook on television because, when he does something like this it means so much more. A very moving tribute to a great man. I think the most moving part in my opinion was Charlie saying "these are the sounds I hear when I think of my childhood. And Oliver Postgate put them there." So true.

  • I'm teary-eyed and I didn't even see these as a kid.

  • never heard charlie so genuine, positive and moving, about another person and their work. Nicely put aswell. Rip postgate

  • i recommend everybody goes onto 'xthemusic' youtube channel and watch charlie brookers newswipe and screenwipe. very good viewing!

  • I recently read Olivers biography, seeing things...an absolute must for any fan of his films and, as you would expect, totally enthralling.

  • Only Camberwick green, Trumpton and Chigley come close to Smallfilms in my book. R.I.P.

  • A fittingly warm tribute for a greatly missed childhood friend.

I wish I could find more than just clips of Poggles Wood, it is their only show not to be released on video or DVD & I have no idea why.

  • Must admit I never saw any of these shows at any point, not sure they were ever screened in Australia, at least not in my day.

But Charlie's obvious respect and passion, coupled with the incredible music, make this tribute very moving regardless.

  • I cried and cried when this was first broadcast, and even now I cry and cry every time I watch it. The Clangers and (particularly) Bagpuss were enormous parts of my childhood, and everything Charlie says is spot on. Mr Postgate, I still miss you...

  • When I was little, I had a video of various children's cartoons (e.g Superted, Postman Pat, Paddington Bear) and Ivor the Engine was amongst my favourites, because it managed to surpass the warmth of all the others. Bagpuss and the like were before my time (I was born in 1987), but even through clips like these I can see exactly what Charlie means. I'm tempted to hunt down the entire series of Bagpuss and buy it on a childish whim.

  • Do it! I've seen The Complete Bagpuss on DVD in the bargain bin at my local UK Blockbuster many times. They over buy and then sell them cheaply. It's in a funny little red case with a handle on it. It's worth 10 times the selling price for memories and nostalgic, fuzzy moments.

  • A brilliant tribute, thank you Charlie. And thank you Oliver for making my childhood more magical.

  • Best tribute ever. You can tell that Charlie's not a mean, rancourous man at all; he's just absolutely right and honest when he vents spleen on the cynical mental abuse that masquerades as TV and especially children's TV today. He is a good, decent man, as Postgate was.

  • I was sadly born a bit too late, and now only discovering the magic at 20.

  • Great tribute

  • I love the Mice song at the start and end, really emotional

  • A beautiful tribute, really well done Charlie. God bless Oliver and all the good he did for Kids. You are truly missed, Sir.

  • May your God be with you Oliver. Thank you.

  • Sleep well Oliver

  • Truly, a remarkable tribute. Stunning. It is perfect, and a fitting tribute to such a talented man. Charlie, you have done a true genius justice. As for the final montage,.....and its only now hes gone that we well truly appreciate the perfectly formed little gifts that he left for us......cut to Oliver.... Bag Puss gave a big yawn and settled down to sleep.......cut to a picture of Oliver. Moving in the extreme. Wow!

  • Thankyou Charlie Brooker and the Screenwipe team, for this moving and heartfelt tribute. I salute you.

  • Just great, perfect pitch.

also nice to see Charlie not corruscating about something not wire related !

  • lumpy throat, perfect tribute, thanks dangale, Charlie & Mr. Postgate!

  • God bless you, Oliver Postgate, for all the warmth and joy you brought to mine and countless other childrens days of innocence. I hope my friend knows what that present means to me!

  • My best mate really blew me awy last Christmas, when he presented me with the complete Noggin the Nog sagas on video, signed by Oliver! I absolutely loved Noggin the Nog as a child and watching them all these years later made me yearn for my childhood and hark back to those days when I'd leg it home to catch the five minute feast of magical wonderment. There were more stories that weren't animated, which is a shame, but those we have are real gems.

  • A more moving tribute to the late Oliver Postgate I've yet to see.

If there's anyone watching this who is not at least thinking about crying by the time the end credits role then you, simply, have no heart.

Well done Charlie for summing up how so many fans of his work feel. He will be sorely missed.

  • stunning, thanks so much for letting me know which song it is, it'll be in my radio show this week.

    RIP

  • Utterly beautiful-made me cry too. Thank you Charlie for taking your cynical head off for once and saying something so kind.

  • I loved that moment when Charlie talked about a thing he REALLY loved. The line about Postgate's voice being like a wise uncle is so true, when I was a child I too wished that someone like Oliver Postgate had been that voice to read me bedtime stories and reassure me that all was well. A really beautiful tribute from a man who for this occasion let that warm untainted by rubbish TV part of him show thru. Thank you Oliver for being my childhood soundtrack and thank you Charlie for being so kind.

  • utterly lovely....thank you so much for posting this

  • This is so lovely it actually makes me cry.

  • beautiful

  • Of all the tributes to Postgate I saw this was by far the best. Please leave this where it is.

  • the clangers were my childhood!! please keep this up it needs to be seen. RIP.

  • BBC - Please allow this to stay up here on Youtube. It's a touching tribute to the man and should be seen by as many people as possible. Thank you Charlie Brooker for having this in your programme, it is much appreciated.

  • A beautiful tribute: it would be a shame if it were to be taken off because it really does deserve to be seen.

For anyone wondering, the music is from the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack: it's Clint Mansell's "Ghosts of a Future Lost."

  • Thanks for the name of the backing music. I'll have to have a listen to that - a relly beautiful tribut from Mr. Brooker.

  • Don't mention it -- it always bugs me when I hear something I like and I spend ages trying to work out what it is. Actually, as someone else pointed out to me, it's technically "Ghosts of Things to Come" from the same album; but they're both just variations on the same basic tune. Actually, actually, just to make things more confusing, there's ALSO "Ghosts" and "Ghosts - Falling" again from the same album, which are also variations on that same basic tune.

  • Thanks for the clarification, it's a lovely piece of music (although pretty short!). When I die I want someone to make a film of my life with this as a background track :)

    Best wishes, Pete

  • This is a fantastic tribute to Oliver Postgate - someone who had an incredible impact on my childhood at the time and my memories of it now. It sums up my feelings exactly - nice one Charlie.

  • Great tribute to both a wonderful storyteller and a golden age of UK kid's tv. There is so much 'magic' in these old shows that just isn't there anymore (in most of today's children's telly.) It is all fast-cutting, loud music and vacuous characters. You only have to watch channels like Jetix to see how bad it has become! Lol!
