I guess it's fun to play online against someone else, but I play something like this game on my PC and on my PSP that looks better than this graphically, but has more to offer like bounties and challenges. You still have to buy your cards in the game I play but you don't have to spend real money, you earn money and points that you use to obtain new cards from the shop and unlock more cards. The game is free and very addicting, plus you get to build your own deck.
i started when the game first came out and quit when tempest came out. they started pushing sets every couple months, no way a 12 year old could afford that. i remember when legends came out and it was huge. collection is still worth a fortune though, glad i never sold when my lotuses were worth $400
Here's the reason. The virtual cards last until the game goes down forever, which will probably have a real card for each virtual card. The real cards depreciate and can get lost or destroyed. You can only play with local people on certain times in real life. On this you play anytime. Literally.
@vaju79 ugg, that would be horrible. $12 a month? after a while you may as well just buy the cards. The best option, I think, would be to have a quest or story mode to play through that allows you to earn cards through playing duels, with the option to buy cards. This keeps money coming in from the people willing to shell out cash, and allows you to play without breaking your bank.
And yeah, I'm in the real cards are more fun, so vitual ones should be much cheaper camp ^_^
I still prefer OCTGN2.0 over MWS or Apprentice any day. Don't say anything about MTGO, I like more of real cards. MWS just plays terrible, looks terrible and many people just have so many problems getting it to work. The only real downside is that OCTGN2.0 doesn't have drafting yet, but now when the Sealed is out, draft will soon come out too.
I have a confession to make :S I paid money for this game and played it and it's actually not as bad as I thought, though I still think it is a waste of money.
@teodortenchev I Pay for paper cards but I enjoy playingo nline too because you get to play against wider varity of people and play times where you may not be able make it down to a shop.
Only play this if there isnt any one around where you live that play magic, real magic is so much better. But if you have no other option, this is the game for you
ya I hate MTGO with a passion, the idea of paying for virtual cards seems insane to me. Now if they actually mailed you the cards you fuckin paid for then maybe this thing would be badass
Millions of people pay real $ to play online games like World of Warcraft... A game that costs $15 a month and once you dont play it-- you no longer can access anything youve been paying for untill you start paying again..
Magic on the other hand, only costs you the initial $10, and after that-- you can play all you want, even if you never spend another dime on the game.
Not to mention that its cheaper than real magic, by far.
Hmm, I guess its a gain if you go at it from the start instead of using physical cards, that way you can always play whenever you want without the loss of the cards you already own.
ya what a rippoff only 10 bucks and you can play all day with people around the world no lets play with paper cards and play the same ten people if you have friends
10 bucks? You obviously just started this game. I can't play with the same 60 cards over and over. I much prefer having my whole collection of 10 000 cards and playing the same people over and over than having one deck and playing thousands of different people.
@teodortenchev that would be the most downloaded game in the history
also it would ruin wizards of the coast...
so I wonder: why won't they make(or let some1 else make) a game thaat would give one of the most expensive games-they own- for free?Who wants money, right?
tobad the xbox 360 version just broke my xbox Booooooo i have no one to play with so online is the only option, you get over 300 cards for 10 bucks and you can play for your life time. it would be a mayjor rippoff if it was a monthly subscription and if you buy a set they send you the real cards
@Valllick yeah 10 bucks to buy the game. well now you have to buy cards too. lets start that math over again once youve built a few decks. digital booster packs.
people real magic is way better and more fun dont spend all of ur time in front of ur computer playing real magic also makes u go outdoors and meet real ppl instead of ppl in internet
That's part of the problem. I am too busy with my 9 month old son to spend 6+ hours on a local tournament. Not to mention that they are all at night and usually last till 2 in the morning. Online is the best option for those who either 1 cannot find a game store locally or 2 just don't have the time, or more appropriately, the exact time to spend at a store.
the worst part about MTGO is you pay for the cards but magic still owns the rights. Meaning if you violate any rules they can ban you and you loose all the cards you bought.
the thing is MTGO is just another product that they offer to the public so don't complain man theirs ways to set it up to get like 20 dollars in gift cards man. Even so the game it's self is free, you pay just as much for real cards as you would the virtual ones because it's another way for them to make more money they don't care if you don't like it seeing as how thousands of other people play it, I just started playing MTGO because the fan base where i live is very low.
It's all true but it's the quality I'm most concerned about. They could have done so much better. They make a lot of money, why can't they invest more in the game client? Why does it look like something developed 5 years ago?
I have to agree with yattadei. There are a lot of times where I wish I could draft without having to drive miles down to my local shop and probably get the disappointment of nobody showing up in the first place. Eventually, I'll start playing MTGO, because you can draft any time. I'm just looking for the practice. MWS just doesn't do that for me. Either I draft when I want for 10 dollars on nothing, or I drive to my shop pay 10 dollars for gas and 10 more on draft... or gas and no draft.
As some ppl point on the comments, MO has auto-rule enforcement, ilike, but as you know, as far as casual play goes MWS is more real, as players can do anything, it means starting from any position they want, for challenges, teaching and that kind of stuff. i play on both MWS and MTGO and i have my reasons. i mainly draft on MTGO because honestly it sucks on mws. people drop out, netdraft times out, and most of hte time you'll play one game with a deck you spent an hour drafting. lame. cost is not a huge factor for me, it's not like i'm drafting 10 hours a day.
I wanted to play it for free but it charges you 10 $ in order to create your account, besides your right, I dont wanna spend money on virtual property.
I tried Magic Work Station... It's pretty stupid if you ask me... Too many people that build the best random decks that they find online and just win... There is no strategy and some kids don't even know the rules half the time...
Someone thought tokens had a converted mana cost! Urgh! They sound like the dumb kids at school that give you a questioning look when you mention triggered abilities and the stack.
dude I play bolth magic and yu gi oh so syfm you ass hole and don't judge other card games as each one has it's own coolness to them idiots should keep their insulting opinions to themselves if you ask me
I have been playing MWS for a long time now with a friend of my in California (I live in Kansas). But I recently started getting into the league play with MTGO and I enjoy it very much. Being able to play in an online league is why I have been enjoying MTGO so much. I do think it is worth it.
I am not saying that it's not useful. All I'm saying that it fails to meet my expectations. Why can't they at least fix the quality of cards? Why can a program such as Magic Workstation render the card images better than a commercial online game such as MTGO? Why are the graphics so lame? Why pay money for that low quality game? The new version of MTGO isn't much better either. I'm disappointed.
Rip Off =/= Disappointed. Parts of v2 are hardcoded and can't be changed. That's what v3 is supposed to fix. If you're really interested we have tons of threads exploring these topics. Also MTGO isn't meant to replace MTG. The target demographic are older and/or lapsed players without playgroups or excess time.
Magic Online is a great way to play magic. You can play people 24-7 and you will always find someone to play with compared to traveling to a spot and hoping to find people to play.
When you purchase virtual cards, they still hold there value online. You can always sell your vitural cards and get your money back or make a profit through various ways. You can even set up your own automated stores that can sell cards for you. I'd say it a worth option if you can't find people to play.
You fail to mention several of the reasons why MTGO is much more popular than MWS/Appr.
1) Automatic Rules Enforcement: You don't have scrubs playing some random stuff that violates the Comprehensive Rules, and then tell you it's legal according to the 4th Edition rulebook or some such thing. You also demonstrated this in your video when you attempted to put multiple lands into play on one turn.
3) Redemption Policy: At a cost of $10 per set, you can redeem your complete MTGO sets (foil and non-foil) in a mint condition factory sealed set. This, combined with the cheaper costs of buying singles, also gives you a way to play Standard for free with physical Magic cards (usually by acquiring 12 sets of any given set, redeeming all 12 for $120 total, and then selling 8 of the 12 to recoupe your costs and keeping 4 for pure profit).
1) Lack of Rules Enforcement: Everything is done manually...which means you can have scrubs trying to drop 4 lands a turn and draw 7 cards a turn if they wish.
2) No tournament/prize structure: Since all the cards are free and everyone is playing their 'dream deck' and netdecked 'whatever placed first in the last big tournament'. Also winning means nothing since there is no rating associated with playing and no prizes either for winning.
3) You have to download the client, card base, images, and themes all seperately. The images are also a ~10GB download for the High Quality images. So for people with a dial-up connection...you're looking at 1 week or more to download all the required files for MWS.
I think the thing about the online version is that you are able to find people online to compete against, so you can play everyone around the world. But yes, buying virtual cards for the same price of real ones is pretty retarded. Card games in general just cost way too much.
You pay real money for virtual cards and it costs exactly as much as the real thing. That's almost like buying virtual land for the same price irl... What I couldn't express with the video, I wrote in the description. Expand it to read my summarized opinion on the problem. (posted again to fix a typo)
You have the exact right idea, and I'm glad you made this video, but it looks like you didn't spend a very very long time on it, as you sort of slapped a soundtrack to your screen images and didn't give it enough of a direction. I hope though, that more people begin to understand this.
I thought of purchasing it but didn't get the purpose of it since you can purchase the real cards at the same price... =S and Can you get the cards ack in real life?
I guess it's fun to play online against someone else, but I play something like this game on my PC and on my PSP that looks better than this graphically, but has more to offer like bounties and challenges. You still have to buy your cards in the game I play but you don't have to spend real money, you earn money and points that you use to obtain new cards from the shop and unlock more cards. Why do I play MTGO instead of paper?/Is MTGO worth it? (Taken from the MTGO community FAQ)
24x7 playing & Maeketplace
Games, Bots, drafters, player run auction
4 of a card is all you need
Cards are safer:
Assuming you take care with your password
MTGO handles the "icky" stuff:
Shuffling, counters, life totals...
Redeemable (except OOP sets):
When you get 1x of a complete set you can redeem them for physical cards, by just paying for shipping.

Bad Things about MWS:

I had read it, and I completely agree with you. I hope more people start to realize it.

You have the exact right idea, and I'm glad you made this video, but it looks like you didn't spend a very very long time on it, as you sort of slapped a soundtrack to your screen images and didn't give it enough of a direction. I hope though, that more people begin to understand this.

I'm sorry but I'm not good at making those. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but it just doesn't look good. The idea is there anyway :)
