I'm thinking of getting a 32gb SSD for a boot drive. Corsair Extreme Series. Somebody gave me a 40$ eBay card an I can get a refurb one for that so I probably will. Anybody think this will not work? All I want to do is put windows and startup on it, everything else goes onto my 640gb caviar black.

@ilovetrains12 The 32gb SSD is going to get full pretty fast because even if you only will put the OS and the drivers on it the other programs you will install on the 640gb drive will save some things on your SSD even if you don't want them to and all the temporal files will be on the SSD. You should buy a bigger SSD or if you have a Z68 motherboard you could use the 40 GB SSD as a cache to your hard drive.

@ilovetrains12 Yeah, manar is right. For some strange reason, even if you only install your OS on it, a lot of files will be put on it. I don't know why Microsoft did this. Also, just a pro tip: Unplug the drive that isn't going to have the OS on it when your doing installation. Windows will put files it needs on the second drive for some reason.

@aSmallSandal Well you can take advantage of way more space with SSD type speeds with the technology. Sounds pretty good to me. But I do have a 40gb boot SSD on my X58... but not sure if I will use the caching or for boot when I bring it to my Z68 rig. I will probably give caching a try.

Using SSD caching, you DO NOT NEED A LARGE SSD. It changes the data on the ssd constantly and everything you use will load at ssd speeds.

I have a mushkin callisto deluxe 60gb ssd and my windows 7 x64 + norton + office + usual programs + 3d mark stuff is less than 20GB (about 18).

If I disable hibernate file, move the virtual memory to the hard drive, disable system restore, all that stuff will be less than 14GB.

So I don't know why a 40GB intel 320 series ssd won't do it.

Also, won't using the ssd as a cache and having lots of writes on it make it wear faster?

linus why do you always use reference vga cards? theyre much louder than cards with a replaced dual fan cooler which btw also run cooler. andd tgey cost maybe $5-$10 more than a reference one

Actually the GTX 560 Ti reference cooler is probably the most quiet cooler of all GTX 560 Ti's (trust me, I have it with MSI Twin Frozr II and the reference cooler is significantly more silent).

And when using other cards (such as 570 and 580) the reference cooler pushes the hot air out of the case while the other fans exhaust it inside the case.

So, my vote goes to reference desing. Well, atleast when talking about Nvidia.
