oh this video brings back memories, i learned how to make pine needle and rafia baskets back in 1956 in fairhope alabama. what a thrill to see that people are still doing this. thanks
Nancy I like to make my baskets while watching your videos. I am always behind in my commissions and it helps to watch other basket makes, in order to keep focused on my own work. Thanks for the videos Nancy. You're a great teacher...
Not to be overly critical, but you should treat the camera as a "student". Show me the bottom of the baskets... the type of stitch, where to place the stitches, etc. That would make the video actually instructional instead of me just watching you and your friends have a lovely afternoon yentering on and on about much of nothing. Thanks!
@richievaughn123 I wasn't teaching you! LOL I was teaching at Mera. You were just along for the fun of it. When I'm teaching you, I'll do what you suggested.
Nancy another way to 'get rid of the ends', is to use a 'wire' stripper. You can find them at any hard ware store. Trust me it will save your finger nails in the future!
@bellylaughing I just use a needle big enough for the dental floss to go through the hole in the needle. I think you can use whatever kind of needle you feel comfortable with! Lucky you with the ponderosa pines!
Did you soak the needles before starting? It didn't seem like it but wouldn't they snap on the first fold? And I couldn't see most of the first steps so I'm a little confused.
I can't wait to buy some rafia and get started! Every time I walk my dogs, the pine needles lure me to want to try a basket! Thank you Nancy! (and yes, you are very patient!)
I think I'll make pineneedle baskets when I'm in georgia again next month.

@RichardOhKaNoi I wish I'd known how to do it in the 60's when I grew up in Georgia, surrounded by a million needles!

There are some cool pine trees here....but they are much shorter, about half the length...will that work?
MrsDixon1234 1 year ago
@MrsDixon1234 They will, but will be much more difficult to use. The basket won't be as good and sturdy, unless it's very small.

@littledebrarae Wow, I had no idea! I'm so glad to hear that. It gives me more incentive to make them. I need an excuse to sit and coil or weave!

The center of the basket was not shown to the camera, but that's ok. What size of sewing needle to you use?
Living in Idaho there are plenty of Ponderosa Pine around waiting ...

What's rafia?
brothersboy777 2 years ago
@brothersboy777 raffia is straw. It was 'formally' dried up leaves from the palm trees.

@littledebrarae oh, thanx

You need to soak them, then they will bend any which way.

You're welcome. Do you have pine needles near you?
NancyToday 3 years ago
I might. Maybe next time I visit the Sequoias. :)

You did a great job teaching! I don't think I would have the patience to teach a bunch of people something like that!
