Nunchaku were common farm tools. Because the then opressive government of Japan outlawing swords, the common people had to develop other ways to defend themselves. Sotomayor apparently doesn't know that to be completely protected, one's government would have to ban everyday items like kitchen knives, firepokers, baseball bats, etc. Is she advocating an even harsher ban on "weapons" than even ancient Japan? Ancient japan? The modern japan has perhaps the strictest laws with regards to weapons. Guns are totally banned, and you have to have all kinds of permits to use martial arts weapons like Katanas, etc.

Guess what though, Japan is one of the safest nations on Earth with a higher standard of living than the U.S.

@jsh78mang You're misinformed, it's perfectly legal to tape Japanese cops, like it is in the U.S. matter fact, I've had my camera out around Japanese cops before. It's American cops which will right away tell you to shut the camera off if they see you with one, even though they know it's your 1st amendment right to film them.

I just looked up the so called Japanese police brutality videos, and I gotta say, if that's "brutality" then what the cops here do must be known as "police lethality."

I guess the difference between us is that I don't trust people as much as you do. There's plenty of situations where even ordinarily responsible trustworthy folks don't use the best of judgment - especially when things like factors like relationships and alcohol are in this mix.

@elsamuraiguapo I have gone through training far beyond what your average police officer gose through. Military and Tactical. Considering most only have to go to the range once a year to pass a non-moving target test. I am able to use my firearm's above most of my LEO friends. I answer force for force, Walk away from the fights I can, and never carry when drinking. I always, as a rule of thumb, think things over. Unless the situation demands immediate action. Then I rely on my training.

Some people just get into martial arts or MMA to reinforce there already aggresive nature. Alot of the problem is misunderstanding. People have a tendancy to fear things they don't understand. It's easier then trying to understand something you fear or dislike.

The way you speak one could immagine you think EVERY gun owner will go out and commit a crime. When guns are actually used far more times to STOP a crime than commit one. I was never stopped or harassed by Japanese authorities. In fact I would often go to the neighborhood police boxes and they were always helpful in giving me directions.
