  • This is class... especially compared to the group of so-called entertainers we're stuck with these days....

  • @flyjets AMEN! You said it. Today's crop of (ahem) "entertainers" call being crass, vulgar, and condescending comedy.

  • I think Sid is still with us.

  • are they all dead?

  • Great! Bob was 95 at the time.

  • you bast............... better stand because you will not see the likes of these ever again.

  • R.I.P guys we will miss you.

  • @DWar1968 sid ceasar is still with us

  • This was a very eerie "final bow" segment as if they were going to be put to sleep after the curtain closed. The newer comedians in the audience were so sad... that's NOT how comedians want an audience to react, they want the audience to laugh. Putting three legendary comedians on stage who were known for their quick wit and not letting them get a laugh had to be very frustrating. Did no one who produced this show see THE SUNSHINE BOYS? Being honored is nice, being relevant is nicer.

  • The standing ovation from today's legends says it all.

  • Hollywood is a cruel industry, indeed. These survivors of the studio system should have at least had a chance at the mic, each. Nope. They bring them on like morbid curiosities for us to gape at. Berle, ever the megalomaniac, patted Hope's head like he was prized Scottie at a dog fair. Sid Caesar, a sweet gentleman off camera, is genuinely happy to be with Hope. Bob & Sid have appeared on the Chabad telethons, as well. A montage of their best should have been showed. Where's the respect? Peace

  • Berle seemed very happy to see Bob... This is great...Thanks for this post.. Sid is still going strong today as far as I know.. amazing.

  • Yeah, three of the greatest and most talented comedians all times and compare them to the little gutter mouthed no talent fools of today and all they would do for them was a few minutes.

  • TtHIS WAS BRODCAST SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 13,1998. BOB WAS 95 HERE.

  • On In Living Color they have a charity called "Keep Hope Alive", which has been partially successful.

  • Bob Hope was amazing

  • I had no idea that Bob Hope was a full time womanizer.

And he stole jokes from Irving Brecher!

  • this makes me so sad....actually more than sad

  • Sad and melancolic!

  • ''thank you for the memory'' thats the song the played right?

  • yeah, it's 'Thanks For The Memories', Bob Hope's signature song.

  • Near you is the first song (Uncle Milty's theme song).

  • What year was this?

  • I'm not sure...sorry.

    tom

  • @tomasred The Emmys started in 1949, and this was the 50th year, so it was 1999. Berle: 91, Hope: 96, Ceasar: 77. Three giants in the entertainment industry......

  • This was in 1998 at, I believe, the 50th Anniversary of the Emmy Awards.

Sadly, Milton Berle died in 2002 at age 93, and Bob Hope died the following year at 100.

Sid Caesar is still with us and will turn 87 next week, Sept. 8th.

  • @Gregg30 if it was the 50th Emmy's, then I think 1999.

  • @Gregg30 this was in 1998

  • @Gregg30 This was broadcast live on September 13, 1998. Milton Berle would live another three and a half years, dying at the age of 93. Bob Hope would live another almost five years, dying at the age of 100. Sid Caesar is still living, aged 89. It's remarkable that many of the old time stars lived long lives, dying in their 90s or later. This despite the fact average lifespan in their day was 68, and that they had performance stress, still ate fatty meats, got very little exercise, etc...

  • @Gregg30 1998. Hope was about 95 at the time, Berle about 90, and Caesar about 76. Mr. Caesar is still alive.

  • Leno: Ladies and "Genleman" -- the putz can't even speak. Sad.

  • I was backstage and helped set this up. i worked with milton at the time and helped don mishner, the shows producer get him and sid caesar. it was an amazing time to sit in the green room with the three of them as they shared stories.

  • Thanks for sharing. Three legends!

  • how was Mr. Hope at the time and who got him on stage? I miss Uncle Miltie and mr. Hope dearly

  • The irony is that Milton Berle helped the chair-bound Bob Hope on the stage that night, but Hope outlived Berle by over a year!

  • This was in 1998, Mr. Hope was still in fairly good shape but a hard time walking unassisted. Probably why he was in a chair easier/safer for him. But then again he turned 95 that year what can we expect lol.

  • The three oldest funny men alive but dead know i wish lucy and ricky could have been there and the i love lucy cast

  • Milton and Bob are no longer with us but Sid Caesar is still around.

  • i personally prefer jay leno ;D

  • I hated that segment, just hated it. Wasn't this (around our house, we call them the Enemas)award show on NBC? After all the money Berle, Hope & Caesar made for 'em, NBC couldn't dig up up a few minutes of tape or kinoscope to present the work of these masters for the younger audiences.

  • Unfortunately I have to agree. It's sad that they couldn't have found a better way to honor three legends - who will still be making people laugh long after Leno is dead and gone - than to trot them out to stand mute while a house full of hacks (ok, ok... and a VERY few real talents as well) clap as if they are applauding a trio of prize winning vegetables.

  • @slicerprime You're only seeing half of the video. Just before Leno introduces them, they play a 5 minute piece on all the great comedy/variety moments from the 50s. And it's not just Bob, Sid & Uncle Miltie, they touch on Jack Benny, Red Skelton and others. I used to have part of the '98 emmys on tape, but then I foolishly recorded over it with some stupid mini-series.

  • sorry, but this was some of the worst directing I've ever seen! Let's see them instead of the long shots and Tom Hanks clapping! Fire that director and hire Alan Smithee

  • Hope lived to be 100, Berle 93, and Caesar is currently 85.

Berle died in 2002, and Hope in 2003.

  • Very cool!!

  • i meant to say the ones who died died at such old age

  • This is proof positive that laughter is the best medicine, they all died at such old age

  • Sid Caesar is still alive.

  • Sid Caesar is still alive.

  • no, mortydand, syd was thrown on the funeral pyre (still alive) when hope and berle kicked off. they made a pact that the last one living must jump into the fire with the 2unlucky stiffs.

  • WOW....WOW....I wish I could have been there!

  • Their gift of making others laugh has something to do with their longevity.

    And they enjoyed it!

  • I can't believe they just stood there. Bob hope was over 95 and died at age 100. Berl died a few years ago around 2005 and was in his 90's. They were the best!!

  • What year was this?

  • Great Moment. So long ovation.

  • That's a long ovation. Sid looks good, but why does Berle keep patting Hope on the back of the head?

  • Berle was probably teasing him. Obviously Bob was in declining health at this point.

  • Sid Ceaser is still alive, I belive

  • He is very much so alive. Its going on 2008.

  • They really were the best, right along with Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks and so many others of their generation. I'm glad I grew up during those years.

  • They WERE the best, God bless 'em.

  • Nice!!
