  • He was a professional sword fighter too...Definately the best Sherlock Holmes ever..

  • I could listen to this man talk forever. Such a calming voice.

  • Basil Rathbone was a famous dolphin right?

  • A wonderful gentlemen! Basil and his wife were famous for there Sunday afternoon garden parties at there home in Bel Air..Always gracious hosts, they had the most inspiring guests who told stories, acted scenes and performed musical numbers. All in all great afternoons which people loved to be invited too..

  • Brett and Rathbone are good for different reasons; Brett was closest to the Holmes in the books but Rathbone is debonair and dramatic enough to be a good actor for the films.

  • Wonderful man. And one who retained his UK nationality too.

  • i love you basil! thanks you for the wonderful sherlock holmes films.....you and nigel bruce were fantastic! xxxx

  • Wonderful actor, great voice, I am just thankful hes left behind some great films and of course Sherlock Holmes. Fantastic .

  • The interveiwer was Reginald Bosanquet !

  • Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes, no doubt!!!!

  • @texascountryusa Well, I agree you, but Basil is great Sherlock also. And then comes wonderful Livanov.

  • @texascountryusa I think you will find that Jeremy Brett model his portrail of Sherlock from how Basil Rathbone did it. Jeremy is a good Sherlock but no where near as good as Basil.

  • I love him. Best Holmes ever.

  • Basil Rathbone = Class.

  • because of your speach, no kidding. Best voice EVER! I could listen to him talk all day.... thanks for uploading this!

  • Basil once said in a radio interview with Tony Thomas(The film historian, author and radio host/producer)that it was the characters and not the plots of"The Sherlock Holmes"films that were it's main success.

  • Fantastic fencer too, as well as a real gentleman... on the cricket team with Karloff, Niven, Bruce et al! Check his recorded readings of POE!

  • The interviewer is Reginald Bosanquet, an ITN newscaster, whose father was a famous cricketer.

  • he is Sherlock Holmes. The new movie is horrible, Downy jr messes up the role.

  • He' was Totentham Hotsuprs fan, Yes!

  • thanx for uploading this. best sherlock ever.

  • I watched "The Hound of the Baskervilles" yesterday and fell in love with a man that was in his prime 75 years ago! He trully defines Sherlock Holmes....

  • Toffee anyone?

  • I grew up watching the Sherlock Holmes movies on Sunday afternoon on WGN in Chicago. I grew to love Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce and adore them to this day. I love seeing any money they are in on TCM,

  • My sister is married to Basil's great great great nephew. Unfortunently that's my only claim to fame, but's it's always fun to tell people Basil Rathbone is my great great great uncle-in-law.

  • @Ansuzie That is awesome!!! Patricia Morrison, who played the part of Hilda Courtney in Prelude To Murder, is still living in New York. Nigel Bruce (Dr. Watson) is a direct decendant of Robert the Bruce...It would be great if someone could be interviewed that actually knew these fantastic actors and actresses..

  • @Ansuzie

    Wow, That's very cool!!

  • Basil Rathbone interviewed by Reginald Bosanquet - who was from a cricket family himself. And the rare sight of Reggie not sozzled too!

  • Rathbone as Sherlock rules! Way way better than Robert Downey in the current version. Actually, there is no comparison. A true class act.

  • @loufalce You have spoken the words that ring true to the hearts of many. We live in an era where we've forgotten the greatest of actors simply because they didn't do sound or color.

  • @vguyver2 How true and how sad. People refuse to watch silent and/or black and white films (for the love of me, I cannot understand why) and all the great actors and films are then slowly forgotten...

  • @deusgeneral I only recently learned that many people won't watch anything in black and white. As if it's something strange and foreign. So nowadays they spend a lot of money to remake a movie with modern actors but they just don't look right. They look and sound like they grew up on the beach in Southern California and never seem quite convincing in any part that demands real character.

  • Rathbone was far better than Jeremy Brett.
