@tcman10 Historically, the University of Illinois Concert Choir rarely ever performed without music. It was part of the tradition of the group. Some prefer to have their music memorized and to perform without it...however, when you have a concert such as this that had 15+ songs programmed...it was nice to have the ability to have the music in front of you.
Each to his own, but with the exception of the middle section, this piece is about visceral and rhythmic energy, and the acc. should reinforce that. At no point is the score marked legato or cantabile for the piano. The piano part needs to be articulated crisply to cut through the thick choral writing. There is really nothing subtle about it.
@pianist1972 Agreed, sir. This piano play did a fantastic job. (wink, wink) His use of dynamics inpired the singers and if you actually watch him, he is playing with much passion. It's all about interpretation. And I the "robotic" was a crisp marcatto interpretation.
my choir (high school) is learning this song right now for a concert in October, and i'm super-excited!!!!! it's such an awesome song, and this is my third time listening to it today. c:
We did it in my high school choir. we didn't use any music when we preformed. It looks much better when everyone is looking at the conductor... Nobody is smiling either...
My choir did it, and with our small numbers.. we sang it just as good, if not better than this. Problem was, we took practically the entire year to learn it.
I must admit when I was learning this song, I HATED IT! Then when I performed it with a choir and heard how amazing it sounds, I loved it! Another favorite piece of music!
Really? When we were learning the song, I could just feel the intensity of every moment of the song. I was always so excited to sing it. Performing it was simply incredible.
I sang this at Regional Chorus when I was a senior in high school and when I was learning the song, it was just me singing so I couldn't hear the intensity of all the parts. So when I finally heard everything together, it totally blew me away and I fell in love with the song.
My high-school choir is singing this song tomorrow in ISMA large group competition and.... Wow. You guys did amazing. As good as our chior is, you guys did it exactly as it SHOULD sound. I wish we sounded like that. We're close we just can't get soft enoug on the "listen, listen, listen, LISTEN!" part and we never get loud enough on the fourth "listen" in that section. You guys do it perfectly at 6:00-6:05.
Bravo to the conductor. Obviously an auditioned group with just the right balance and blend. Precise and well executed. Kids are kids everywhere....it takes the mastery of the conductor for this level. BRAVO!
I was the pianist here and did this with my hs choir as well, and while our performance could have been better in some ways, it would be a one in a million hs choir that would sound like this. As for all the good singers that come out of U of I...hmmm, those are fewer than they used to be.

Jesus H. Shut up and enjoy the music; stop comparing it to other choirs. I, for one, love this performance.
We're doing this for our MPA! Wish us luck!

did this a few years ago in our highschool choir. it sucked to memorize such a long song, but it still sounded awesome :) great video!

Check out UCLA's performance of it! It's far more energetic and brilliant!

Good for you guys. This is a very very difficult piece. I performed it when I was in college, only I was the accompanist. Very hard song. Nice job.

My high school choir learned this song in about 3 weeks - we were terrible compared to this! How beautiful! You are all wonderful!

We are singing this too. But the difference is we sing it as a children choir.

too slow. During a "it darts like lightning" there is one bad alto standing out. Also it should be sohng. not Saong. It's very wide. too legato.

we did this in Illinois Honors All state Choir, a little faster too

Sang this when I was in 10th grade. Only took a quarter to learn it. We sounded just as good. Also sang it for a competition in New Jersey.
This is really good, but I feel it's a tiny bit slow in some parts of the song. Other than that, great.
I wish my college choir could sing like this.

With all the good singers that come out of U of I... why are they not in this chorus? Sounds like a good high school choir.

you don't need good singers for a great choir...just average ones that sing in tune and a wonderful conductor.
