  • Guys...and Girls...Please listen to Bart and Joe closely. They both talk about a man they RESPECTED and ADMIRED. John Unitas was a great Football player AND (as Mr. Namath adds "a great guy") Thank you for posting this. I too am a Big fan of all three of these guys. Its about life, not football. Thanks again. RIP Mr. Unitas

  • Those of you who dis Starr need to do your research - he led the NFL in passer rating five times. Johnny Unitas & Joe Montana led the league in passer rating just twice. Only Steve Young's six surpassed Starr. He was the best postseason passer in NFL history; a record 104.8 playoff passer rating and 1.41 percent interception rate-also a playoff record. Starr played when 80 was a decent passer rating. Yet he still performed more efficiently in the playoffs than anybody, ever.

  • THESE 2 HOF QBs, KNOW THE MAN IS & WAS, STARR STUDIED HIM, NAMATH, TALKED ABOUT THE RULES, HE WAS THE BEST EVER, 911 OVER-SHADOWED HIS DEATH, I WAS AT YANKEE STADIUM WHEN THEY HONERED HIM, THEY PUT ME ON THE BIG SCREEN, I WAS WEARING HIS WHITE JERSEY, AND HAD BOTH OF HIS JERSEYS' TAPED ON THE RAILING IN FRONT OF ME, IT WAS AWSOME, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, JOHN, YOU THROW TO THE ANGLES NOW, R.I.P. BOBBYRAY19

  • Listen to "broadway Joe" at 5:58-6:48 what great respect and tribute he had for the toughness of even an aged and injured Johnny Unitas during that Super Bowl III which he and the Jets won.

  • Vinny Testeverde is the best quarterback (by far) in both college and pro football history.

  • Interesting to read the crawl on Iraq at the start of this clip.

  • starr and joe willie what can you say?

as diff as 2 guys can be and yet side by side

    they seem to go perfectly

to hear them speak so highly of unitas is all

the eulogy that man could ever need

t/y for the vid really impressive

  • ..... Namath is not even 1/10 of a quarterback starr is ...

  • Now as far as stats go, I'm a Patriots fan and the 50 TD's to me means nothing more than the Patriots in 2007 had a great offense with a great leader. Troy Aikman had terrible stats and won a few Super Bowls- THAT'S where stats come into arguments (to separate the bad from good) because Aikman is the most overrated QB of all-time.

  • fyi jIKK -NFL champs 58,59,68,71. In 1968 in spite of the loss in Superbowl 3 they (Baltimore Colts)were NFL champs because the leagues(NFL-AFL) were not united yet. Unitas also played in the 1964 NFL Championship game and lost . So if you just go by championship games alone he played in 6 and won 4. Only Ottto Graham came close to that and then Bradshaw,Starr, etc.

  • The point I'm trying to make is Great TEAMS win championships and because you don't have one it shouldn't blemish your career

  • ironic that bart starr mentions the longevity of brett favre playing and the interview is 2002..........

  • @morgankitty1 that's not ironic at all.. learn the meaning of the word irony

  • First time I seen this interview! Thanks Greta for spending all that time talking about Johnny U. and thank you Joe Namath for being so honest in your rememberance. You yourself played in the times when QB's were not that well protected by the officials, and you were awesome also! Wayne Arthur

  • LEGENDS

  • i hate when ppl say that you cant be a good player unless you win a championship. barry sanders gale sayers oj simpson ladanien tomlinson and have 0 combined rings. roger craig has 3. would you take roger craig over those players?

  • @mylest100 i'd like to replace two of those words in your comment.. you can't be a GREAT QUARTERBACK unless you win a championship. absolutely no exceptions. i dare someone to bring up marino..

  • @btuc401 Fine I won't bring up Marino Here is a list of Great QB's with no rings: Jim Kelly, Warren Moon, Steve McNair, Rich Gannon, Dan Fouts, YA Tittle, Donavan McNabb, Fran Tarkenton,

  • @btuc401 Now here are "great quarterbacks" because they have rings: Earl Morrall, Jim Plunkett, Jim McMahon, Doug Williams, Jeff Hostetler, Mark Rypien, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson,

  • @btuc401 Wins elevate your status, but they don't change your stats. Montana, Bradshaw, Brady and Manning all have great stats and wins, as such they'll be seen as higher than Marino, but it doesn't mean Marino isn't great. That said, Marino's stats certainly elevate him among many SB one-timers like McMahon and Dilfer (who is an awful QB). It's not Marino's fault the Dolphins gave him little to work with (although Brady doesn't seem to let that stop him much).

  • @TheFortressMaximus The last part of your comment in parenthesis is my argument. Brady won 2 Super Bowls without much talent. Back then you'd say Brady calmly walk up to a receiver who just dropped a pass and just nudge his helmet. I've seen footage of Marino exploding because of a dropped pass that wasn't even on the money, and because of that I'll go out on a limb and say he's not a great quarterback because he does not have great leadership skills, which is why he never won anything.

  • I do love that Brett Favre is the only active quarterback namedropped during a interview about Johnny Unitas.

  • Between her mushmouth and her gaudy factoids to Bart Starr, this broadcaster is fucking terrible.

  • Great thanks for putting this clip on YouTube.

I had not known of this interview until I stumbled on it here today.

  • Blanda, Unitas, Namath, Montana, Marino, Kelly. All Western Pa.

  • i agree tarkenton was the best...but i love johnny unitas

  • George Blanda was a good Quaterback too

  • Len Dawson, Bart Starr, Johnny Unitas, Sammy Baugh, Otto Graham... those 5 guys were h-a-n-d-s d-o-w-n the best QBs ever, much more so than ANY the moden day rule-change addled frauds of the last 30 some years.

  • I put Fran Tarkenton at the top.

  • You are underestimating Joe Montana. I think Unitas was the best ever but Joe Montana did one thing...he won.

  • Unitas, Namath, Marino all from western PA

  • Don't forget Kelly lol.

  • AND OF COURSE MONTANA! from western PA

  • Absolutely. Many great quarterbacks from that region.

  • Unitas set the standard.

  • Joe is the most glamorous football player ever. Remember his Hugh Hefner-style TV show?

  • Stats prove that you are a great individual. Rings only prove how good your teams are. Montana, Young, and Marino are a lot better individually than Starr and Namath.

  • Bart Starr won five (5) NFL Championships...1961, 62, 65, 66, 67. Humble to this day. No quarterback ever won more championships than Bart Starr. Nothing more needs to be said.

  • Actually, they are better. Bart Starr has more championships than all of them combined, Namath won an AFL and a Super Bowl, and Unitas won 2 NFL Championships and a Super Bowl.

Montana was actually good, but mostly thanks to Walsh. Young barely won one SB thanks to the Cowboys collapse, and Marino has nadda.

Stats mean nothing unless you win it all.

  • @Jikk

bart starr wasn't as good as you believe. he was surrounded by all-star running backs, an offensive line featuring one of the best ever in forrest gregg and a legendary coach. he didn't have to do as much as QBs of his era since the defense had to account for so many other players.

  • @Jikk I would say Montana is better. You can't look me in the eye and say Walsh made Montana and not say Lombardi didn't make Bart. The Green Bay Packers were a run first offense, so Bart didn't have to do much. Don't get me wrong, the guy is great, but Montana is the greatest.

  • joe namath and Bart Starr = Bama legends

  • YEAH! GO JOHNNY! He's my favorite player of all time!
