Basically, he over used his voice and developed a cyst on his vocal cords. Strong intense singing, high notes and frequent singing can result in damage of the vocal cords. It probably didn't have anything to do with him smoking. Getting a cyst like that is not all that uncommon for singers.

I don't think he had laryngitis, because that's when the vocal cords swell up, even to the point of the windpipe swelling shut. And there wasn't an infection, because both laryngitis and cysts are caused by abusing your voice, not bacteria. I'm a student studying this stuff, so I know what I'm talking about (and I don't mean that in a know-it-all way...) I'm so glad he recovered!

what happened?: he had laryngitis but he didnt treat it, and just waited for it to go away. eventually ofcourse it got all messed up or infected but he kept singing. during his tour he started to not be able to sing as much because the cyst (the infection) was getting so bad. if he had kept singing he would have lost ability to sing for the rest of his life. scary huh? and to think it all started with a little case of laryngitis.
