CLASSIC & I can relate ... w/friends & family that want you to walk on eggshells for acceptance when being yourself should be enough SO, you say GO PLEASE YOURSELF!
Ricky caught flack for changing his style; growing his hair out ...leaning away from the straight laced look of the 50's Ozzie & Harriet, but he got the last laugh with a #1 hit about it.
So True & yet so simple. You will spend a lot of time and a frustration trying to please people, who may not need to be pleased. Please yourself and you will be saved, trying to please others you will be damned forever because you won't & everyone's a critic.
Love Rick Nelson, Love this song. The guy on the Bass guitar looks like a fellow I went to High School with. I believe his name is Steve Love, can anyone help me out with that?
No Rick... no Eagles. He stepped out of the TV box he was born in. First teen-age idol. Once he got his freedom... he set the standards that others would follow in their own way. Hell, even Mike Nesmith had three "progressive country" albums right after the Monkees! And, they were standing alone... playing what they wanted.
They were already rich... then it was about playing the music that wasn't being shoved down their throats. I miss Rick Nelson. A LOT!
@wdchefdave56 I personally will always love that "progressive country" sound. Or, wasn't it called a California country sound or something like that? I think it all came out of Southern California anyway. I was raised on the stuff and my mom adored Rick. I miss him, too
Rick Nelson was a talented man. Good voice. Sold millions. Pretty good actor. Unfortunately like a "type cast' actor, Rick was forced to play his old songs from the 50"s,and never was appreciated in innovating "Country Rock". Died young, way before his time. RIP Eric Hilliard Nelson.
Maybe he should of got a haircut. His appearance suggests that he doesnt care about the expectations that are expected of him. People tell alot about themselfs through the appearance of them. So if somebody appears like a bum they will generally blame the world for the problems.
Nelson ...stand in front of the sink in the bathroom & look straight ahead. You will see your real enemy, fool.
@pbrick6301 You are apparently the fool. What the hell? Millions of fans had no problem with Ricky Nelson's "appearance"! RIP, Rick. You are loved and missed.
@pbrick6301 Man, you are SUCH a dumbarse!! That was the style of the day and his appearance has nothing to do with his talent. Unfortunately for him he was 'typecast' in that 50's style of music and never really managed to break out of it. The success of this song shows that he had the talent to appeal to a wider audience, albeit too late.
@pbrick6301 WTF is wrong with the way he looked here? What year was it? 1972 not 1957! He actually still looks clean cut for that moment in time. Hes worse mistake was worrying about what people like you think and waiting to long to be himself!
he wrote this song after he was booed off at madison square garden because he didn't sing his old songs.... obviously, it hurt him, but he got the last redemption because this song was a huge hit .
@alexaadap He did sing his old songs, and he says so in the lyrics. But he also wanted to incorporate his newer country rock songs into the show and some of the audience didn't appreciate his direction into that kind of music. It's hard to believe now, but the fact that he had longer hair and was not the Ricky Nelson from the 50's many remembered also apparently turned some people off.
I PLUMB 4GOT ABOUT THIS TUNE FROM RICKY. WHOS SEEN THE THE ANNIMATED MOVIE HE DID THE SOUND TRACK 2?. I THINK IT WAS CALLED THE STORY OF OBLIO AND ARROW?.
This is great... but it needs the original soundtrack. As TheStonecanyon mentions the video portion showsThe Stone Canyon Band with Steve Love on bass. The soundtrack is from a much later live recording, probably the 1985 LA show. I always thought Rick had it right the first time, he was in top form musically when this clip was filmed.
I've always liked your brother -- with Rick, then Roger McGuinn and then the New Riders. Please let him know he has a big fan. What's he up to these days?

You have to watch this. It is the reason Ricky died according to his daughter Tracy. He bought the haunted house of Errol Flynn.
Go to HULU AND "Celebrity Ghost Stories". Episode three, Season Two!
