Everyone: please be sure to check out the legendary recording by the great violinist and Heifetz protege, Erick Friedman, with the London Symphony Orchestra of Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen on my Youtube channel under 'Erick Friedman performs Sarasate' in two parts.
While Milstein was/is my favorite, Rosand is greatly underrated, and his 1960's record of Sarasate pieces is my favorite of all time. For Sarasate, no one's better! Great artistry and great playing!
This performance in its entirety can be heard elsewhere on U-Tube.
His tone is amazing and his skill fantastic. He uses every bit of the bow and knows the right pressure to apply to the bow to create the perfect sound.
Most of the time the horse hair of the bow of the violin is suppose to float over the string. Its already heavy enough with out pressing to make a great tone. The rest is all speed, steering and ballancing. A little swerving in the right places is nice.
He gets such a rich powerful sound from frog to tip with so little bow pressure not a lot of crunchity crunch crunch attacks or pressed sound. Gorgeous vibrato too!
WOW!

Check out his Sarasate Navarra recording. It is amazing. He plays BOTH solo parts and it is just off the freaking charts great.

@Nijiyume I learned about him through Gil Shaham. He said that Rosand was the violinist he looked up to as a child.
