  • I can certainly hear how that lick could bring some chills up your spine. If I had to define Duane for a certain style or phrase it would have to be his great slide playing and his killer studio version of the 2nd solo of in memory of elizabeth reed.

  • trishandwill is corrct guys...sorry

  • This is boring, apart from the end. There are way better examples of his playing, e.g., the intro to Statesboro Blues on Live at the Fillmore East!

  • This is good, but right at 7:45 into Boz Scagg's tune, 'loan me a dime' you'll hear one of the most original guitar solos ever played. Duane is on guitar. Of all my favorites that died early, I wonder most about what Duane would have gone on to do. If that doesn't get you then listen to 'loan me a dime' at 9:47 and point me towards any other guitarist improvising like this during his time. He's one of the most original voices I've ever heard on the guitar. Unreal!

  • Love the hammond chords in the background as well. They sound as if they're stroking your ears!

  • 143 people don't like peaches

  • I'll go with "Dreams", thanks.

  • That's the end of his solo on "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and it's about the best finish ever. You might have put the whole solo up so people could take it in context, but it's all good. And people, if you don't agree, suggest an alternative, as some of you have. Save the negativity for politicians or someone who deserves it.

  • I hate licks like this, they're extremely boring and hard to listen to.

  • My personal favorites are the times Duane and Dickey trade fours on "One Way Out" and when Duane does the same with Eric Clapton on "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?".

  • you're joking right? Duane would laugh.

  • Yep. 'nuff said

  • the slide solo from dreams ranks right up there with me.. the man had a soul as wide as the ocean and twice as deep...

  • Really? You'd choose THAT lick? Wow.

  • Maybe he just hasn't heard "Road of Love" or "Somebody Loan me a Dime" or "Shake for Me," yet.

  • i dont agree, he's got shit that would bury this

  • hate to be the one to say this... but this is dickey betts playing his solo on Les Breres in A minor.

  • @bews522a no this is Duanes solo on In Memory of Elizabeth Reed without a doubt. You can easily pick out Dickey's tone and Duane's.

  • @bews522a NO

  • @bews522a As the others have said, this isn't Les Brers, it's definitely In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. But my personal favorite is the guitar work in Mountain Jam. To me that was the Allman Brothers at their best, free-form improvising, from mellow melodic to hard edged. Letting the song tell them what to play. Great stuff.

  • this is shit for Duane. listen to liz reed, blue sky,the entire filmore album

  • That is part of Duane's solo from a performance of Dickey's song In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.

  • What is name this song?

  • when does the great lick come in?? i heard garbage

  • @63drawoh Do you practice being a total dick or does it just come naturally?

  • @MidianGTX i was excited because i just came all over your mom - that was natural yum

  • what show is this from? Can be streamed?

  • THere are way better examples of Duane Allman's playing.

  • @trishandwill

    ditto!!

  • Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident While in the western part of Macon on October 29, 1971 during a band break from touring and recording, Allman was riding his motorcycle toward an oncoming truck that was turning well in front of him. Allman lost control of his Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle while trying to swing left,, crushing his internal organs. , he died several hours later, just weeks before his 25th birthday.

  • well let me just vote you all as missing the mention of the slide solo from Don't Keep Me Wondering from the old Duane Allman Anthology or the Elmore James- Done Somebody Wrong, not to mention Statesboro Blues...and oh yea Duane is the man but let's give it up for Dickey Betts rock solid guitar solo's always...

  • It's is hard to say there isa best lick. But If I had to I would pick the solos on Hot Lanta, or You don't love me or mybe Why does love have to be so sad, or Whipping Post live to name a few. I'm not counting the great slide solos

  • hey, TBird5790, I totally agree with you as far as talking about the music, but why the name-calling? Here's a guy, skydogsys, who derives a great deal of joy from Duane Allman and wants to share that joy with the world, and has distilled it down to that one guitar lick. Now, this ain't the laws of physics; this is one fellow human expressing his heart-felt subjective opinion, so why call him a moron or puny-minded? No need for this; is your goal to convince or offend?

  • This was a poor idea, and certainly not "the best" Duane Allman lick ever. Why do Moron's continually try to label something as "The Best Ever" because in their puny little mind they think their opinion about a little tiny piece of someone's career is soooooooo important for everyone to know. It trivializes the impact someone has in their field who is arguably one of the pioneers in Rock, and especially slide guitar style.

Just a poor example of Duane's greatness. Stop it. You ain't got it!

  • @TBird5790 just like eric's woman tone? eddie's brown sound? satch's scream?

  • It is impressive, but not as jaw dropping as you think. As someone that has played for over 45 years, this is less jaw dropping than you would think. For one, He's playing way up on the neck. On a guitar, the higher up you play, the thinner the frets are. There's less of a reach. Second, What he's actually doing is taking his 3rd or fourth finger, and plucking & releasing the first string, then striking 2nd string with right hand & repeat.PnkFlyd did same on CraZ Dmd but<. Mountain Jam better.

  • One thing that Duane would do that was cool is break into "Joy to the World" at the end of some songs-

  • Road of love duane all man

  • im glad i heard this snippet~

  • Why would we take 30 arbitray seconds of a solo and post them? It would be like opening one of the great classics of literature and reading a few pages in the middle of the book. Elizabeth Reed is like a "symphony" and, while the guitar work here is impressive, the whole is certainly more than the sum of its parts.

  • 4ristotle, I couldn't agree more well stated. In the scheme of things if this was all I heard of Duane I would have been less than impressed!

  • It's the end of the Stairway to Heaven solo

  • i dis agree, if dewayne were defined by only one lick, dewayne was defined by his SLIDE PLAYING.wich would have to be the little ditty played after ( woke up this mornin had dem statesboro blues, didididididdidididiiuudidudiiiii !!!!! from the second verse( looked over in tha corner and grammaw had dem too)

  • This is hardly Duane Allman's definitive lick. I can play this, though not near as good. But this is not even close to the best representation of DA's ability.

  • BTW, this video deserves context as stated by many....the 25 minute build up that this probably received would have been epic :D

  • Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Tony Iommi used this lick too =D

  • It would be a terrible mistake to think this was Duane's best lick. I have way too much respect for him to even consider that that's the best he had... and I've been a avid/rabid fan since before Live At The Filmore debuted. He was one of the all time greats and that riff was just a passing thought in his musical vocabulary... and VERY easy to do.

  • @skydog7725 Your name says it all man! Peace!

  • @thyultimate - Thanks man - and peace to you as well. Today is Easter Sunday 2011. Eat a Peach for Peace! I love Duane and hope he is rockin out with the greatest players that have crossed over.

If you're interested, paste skydog7725 Statesboro Blues in the Youtube seach panel to view a recording I made... I play Statesboro Blues against a backing track.

    Peace!

  • I can't believe this hard on still has this posted ! has the nob jockey told anyone else how he" played this in "69" ?lol lord jeeziz what a fucking burnout!

  • Its good but i can do that as can many others so whats the big deal?

  • @RollockBoy you didnt do it first

  • @powerkor whats your point? im not slating him, im just saying it isnt amazing, he's come up with better riffs

Playing 3 notes fast over and over isnt rocket science, guitarists before him could probably do it

  • @RollockBoy having a computer on your desk that can produce multi-track recordings and manufacture cds is no big deal either, unless you consider historical context. fire is no big deal either, but it was to the first person that figured out how to make it and use it.

  • the impressive part is the endurance. mentally and phyisically. I'd get either bored or a tired wrist!

  • His names not Duane!!!! It's God!!! Get it right!!!

  • Excruciating to listen to. That wasn't one of Duane's better moments.

  • Agree with 4ristotle. Lick on its own is out of context. Just a triplet - a great and well done triplet with unmatched intensity - but it is like taking a few words out of a classic poem.

  • Not necessarily his best lick, but the opening lick to "Layla" is written/played by Duane. Being the gentleman he was, he never took any of the light off Clapton, but much of the arrangement and layering of that song (hell, the whole album really) is all Duane Allman.

R.I.P. Skydog. The best there ever was.

  • duane was somethion else

  • I just bought a Wine red Custom Les Paul,,,its beautiful. I figured my Cherry s/burst LP was lonely...that was my excuse to the wife. I would love to own a 57 Goldtop like Allmans.

  • @shawnycats ok..ok..im sorry. I made a dumb comment in a moment of boredom. I respect Allman and his playing very much. He is placed deservedly in the RS pole as one of the best guitarists. I apologize.

  • I disagree this is his best lick. Listen to I'm gonna move to the outskirts of town off of the dreams box set. The opening solo is about 2 minutes long and it completely sums up duane's playing. Spacey, melodic, bluesy. Also Liz Reed off of the same album is Duane's best soloing on the song. Wish I was good at youtube or id post it haha

  • @shawnycats duane allman lend me a dime solo

  • @Limesquibbo The dumbest thing said on youtube...I take pride in that. Something to tell the grand kids. Hang on..maybe I can top it. The Rolling Stones are shit.

  • If this is the 'only one lick (...) associated with Duane Allman' then he goes down as he goes down as a pretty lame guitarist. I've been playing for 30 years and it is a simple and quite boring waste of 30 seconds. Its a 3 note riff played at speed...I learned that at 13. Slash on the other hand....creates amazing versatile blues/country/rock solos with soul, passion and ease that you never forget. I will admit his playing has suffered since leaving GN'R.

  • @tuymans how can you not know duane allman and play for 30 years..

  • @tuymans That is probably the dumbest thing ever said on youtube. Ive only played guitar for 3 years and yet it seems i know more than you. Duane allman compared to slash now cmon slash is no where near duanes skill level. Slash plays with NO soul and emotion. Now i agree this definateley isnt duanes best lick but before you start talkin shit about rolling stones 2nd best guitar player of all time you better learn your facts

  • @Limesquibbo I agree totally. Slash is nowhere near the guitarist that Duane Allman was. Stormy Monday on Fillmore East evokes more emotion than anything Slash ever did.The guy @tuymans claims to have been playing for 30 years and I have never heard of him but I sure as hell have heard of Duane! My cousin who co wrote a song with Chet Atkins said almost the same thing about Slash's licks. He asked me when I heard him play licks like Slash and I said when he was was 16.

  • @Limesquibbo totally agree! the problem is pandering to a bunch of inexperienced dim witted kids! they want slash so the magazines put him on the cover period!

  • @tuymans you see, it's the musicians who can say in 3 notes what can't be said in 200 that set them apart from the rest of the B musicians. if you listen to this whole solo man, the tension and the build up to this climax is beyond any guitar players ability, which is why Duane is ranked #2 on RS top 100 list. He can say more with less than any other guitar player who lived other than hendrix.....and Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes of course : ) and please don't eveeeeeer compare slash to duane

  • @shawnycats Amen brother

  • from wat cd i gotta get this

  • boring

  • I personally think the Soul Serenade part he did at WPLJ 8 26 71 in the middle of You Don't Love Me was arguably one of, if not his finest moments

  • OH MY GOD!!!

  • Dear god, please give us back Duane and take Justin bieber...amen.

  • @paygi110709 Please Forgive Us God. We know not what we do.

  • @paygi110709

You think this is his best lick because you never heard him on Clarence Carter's "Road of Love" where he switches his amp mid-blast without missing a lick. It is Les Paul supreme.

  • @paygi110709 +several hundred...well if not giving back allman, at least take away that grotesquely pathetic excuse of a musician back man!

  • @paygi110709

should feel bad for that offering

  • omg

  • anyone know wat song this is from

  • @trucksfan

    in memory of elizabeth reed

  • @trucksfan Hot Lanta

  • @trucksfan woop0s I meant "In memory of Elizabeth Reed"

  • lol. Skill timing and a little soul?? lol

  • maxin out is ace when youre doin it

  • This lick isn't all that interesting on its own... it's its context that makes it good. In the Fillmore East version of Elizabeth Reed, Duane spends at least a minute (and arguably his whole solo up to that point) bringing his solo to a point where ten (or thirty) seconds of 3 notes played over and over at a blistering pace is exactly what is needed.

Cutting this bit of his solo is quoting out of context - it doesn't give a representative picture of Duane's playing at all.

  • @4ristotle Perfectly stated.

  • @4ristotle

Well said. When I saw the title, I expected something phenomenal but was sadly disappointed. I expected to hear his brilliance but instead heard something Duane could probably play the 2nd day he began playing guitar.

  • don't stop don't stop. Don't stop playing those 3 notes. I like :)

  • man i wonder if Jimmy Page knows of Duane. I mean. Duane could make Page seem like a newbie. Duane and Page and Rhoads are my favorite guitarts

  • @viris17y you wonder if jimmy page knows of duane allman? are you trying to make yourself sound like an idiot?

  • oHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH my face just melted

  • I honestly appreciate all the work of jimi Page but he is a joke compared to Duane

  • @ximib12 How could you say something so stupid? Delete that comment. Please!

  • @guitargirl761 Give us a break please you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • @guitargirl761

duane was a better guitarist than jimmy page. dont get me wrong, jimmy page was incredible but duane just had more feel and expression.

  • @Glassandcandy in terms of feel, rhythm and technical skill, yes, i think i agree. but jimmy page was a master innovator of sound and tone, and that counts for a lot. at a certain point certain cases of extraordinary talent cease to be better or worse than any other case, simply different. i could listen to either one of those dudes all goddamn fuckin day any day.

  • @Glassandcandy hey fucker! im ganna fuck you up tha ass, duane allman was the love of my life

  • @Glassandcandy More expression than Jimmy Page? Creativity? Imagination?

Duane Allman compared to Jimmy Page?

More feel than Jimmy Page? Dear God have mercy.

  • @1spati Yes all of those things. Page actually snatches this riff and used it at the end of Stairway to heaven.

  • Not bad

Almost - I say again almost as good as Jimmy Page

  • what is the name of the song?? please... thanks!

  • I was a big Duane Allman fan. But I feel kind of bad for anyone who honestly thinks that's the best of his playing or that that annoying box run rep is somehow sublime.

Are we being Rick rolled here?

  • Comment removed

  • This sounds like a 10 year old is trying to play the end part of Stairway to heaven solo.... Badly. Duane Allman seriously shouldnt have been #2 on rolling stone greatist guitarists list. Awfully simple guitar parts, even out of tune on some records... Creative? More like he didnt know what a mode was.

  • @Potential91 Put him up with your pick any day

  • @BlkIvy16 comment not the one listed. That was mine , Like who you choose. But I'll take my list Duane, Jimi, Dickey, Toy, Gaines etc. they are all Great ! Just enjoy the music .......

  • What ever the technical (de)merits of this, it sounds great :)

  • Not to take anything away from Duane, but this isn't even close to being his best lick. it's actually a very simple phrase that most guitarist can do without much effort. He's got MUCH better stuff in his repertoire - especially slide playing.

  • What song is this? Did it appear on any album? Thanks in advance

  • I think Duane Allman is the greatest guitar player ever, but this is not his best lick. He's got so many better ones. This one is a tad repetetive.

Still good, just far from his best.

  • Far from Duanes best...give your head a shake..

  • Honestly... while it's fast there really isn't a whole lot going on here.. in fact this is a "rest" for Duane as he thinks about where he wants to take the solo. Johnny Winter does this a lot too. Truthfully there are a lot more interesting Duane solos out there.

  • @Wharfomatic I don't really think Duane "thought" too much about where he wanted leads to go.....which, you shouldn't really think much about where you wanna go...you'll get in big trouble!..hehe....Duane just picked up the guitar and played from the heart....much like SRV after him....I think EVERY lead Duane and SRV played was purely intentional, uninhibited....not overthinking....just JAMMIN'! \m/

  • @SheaBearden Agreed.. maybe "Thought" was the wrong word but as a guitar player myself I know there are moments during a jam were you rest for a moment or two to get your bearings and hear where everyone else is. That's more to the point I was trying to make.

  • @Wharfomatic ahhh i see what you're gettin at! ;-)

  • boring...

  • Loved the Allman Bros. since I was 12 years old. Duane was one of the greatest, but this is absolutely NOT his or anyone else's greatest lick ever. This is just simple pull off's for fill.

  • favorite Allman Brothers song

  • What song is this?

  • make a cool ring tone

  • this is just duane pulling from 15 off to 12 on the high e string. ALthough I agree its sounds incredible hes capable of waaaayyyy more.

  • @JD101PRO Yeah. Its kind of an insult to Duane to say this is his best.

  • Duane's my favorite guitar player and that's a mean riff. Hendrix plays a similar repeating triplet pattern in his solo on "Red House." I'd be interest to know what blue artist first coined that pattern on the electric guitar. If I had to choose a riff that really hollers out at me from Sky Dog's archives of achievement I'd probably go with his slide work on Statesboro Blues live at the Fillmore east. RIP Duane Allman

  • Who cares? Just enjoy it!

  • in memory of elizabeth reed

  • even though duane would most probably be associated with the slide considering he was the most influential slide guitarist of all time

  • plain and simple, you just posted the greatest insult to Duane Allman that I have yet to see on youtube... congratz on slowly killing a king...

  • that has to be one DB's cheapest lead lick...just a tweeda lead...booring.....Duane wouldnt be that repetitive if you had put a gun to his head....

  • @cheezervvvvv It IS Duane. I have the CD. Yes, that particular lick is repetitive, but the solo itself is still vintage Duane.

  • Anyone saying this is Dickey is way off. Anyone who knows anything about "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" could tell you that Dickey plays the opening lead and first guitar solo, while Duane plays the second guitar solo. This happens in the middle/end of the second guitar solo. It's a classic Duane lick that he performs on Wilson Pickett's "Hey Jude" and on "Hot 'Lanta". The build up to this lick's release is what makes it fantastic. "You Don't Love Me" has my favorite quick Duane lick at 13:50.

  • @adamken47 if you ever listen to duane he has a way more rich/fat sound with much less treble so you may want to research that statement

  • @bionicbutthole Thanks for trying to keep me honest :) This sound byte is from a performance of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. It is from the second guitar solo, originally performed by Duane on both the studio recording and the live at Fillmore East recording. He had been known to do this repetitive lick on the tracks I have mentioned already. Consider it researched. His tone was generally achieved by cranking the gain, so in many of his songs it tended to have a screaming quality. That's a fact.

  • @adamken47 i listened to it and you are right, my mistake but i still feel like duane would be more recognized for his slide work which influenced other music and musicians like derek trucks and free bird

  • @bionicbutthole You're completely right. His slide skills were second to none and this lick (though one of his signature moves) doesn't even scratch the surface as to what made him great. The man was a musical genius, whose true strength was the amount of emotion he could create with his guitar, slide or not. He was never repetitive and always on point. A true original.

  • @bionicbutthole I agree Duanes tone was more treble rolled off middles and bass rolled on for that smooth mellow tone it's his playing is what made it burn.

  • Yeah, that's Dickey. Duanes work was generally a lot funkier and soulful than Dickey, who could really be repititous at times.

  • @Jubal24 No, it is not Dickey. I have the CD. This is part of Duane's solo from "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" from the SUNY-Stonybrook 9/16/71 live album. I listen to it just about every week.

  • wtf not his best lick at all its just three notes over and over and over again, it was great because it fit the song and he was feeling it but this is in no way shape or form duane at his best.

  • Definately Dickey Betts bro, you need to study up on the allman brothers. hot lick though, i love it. its the climax to in memory of elizabeth reed

  • E-20-17

    B-----17 > infinity

  • Holy ¡! where can i found that ?

  • it's basically all about duane and jeff beck!!!!!!!!!!!

  • not the greatest lick.

  • have u ever heard Alvin Lee in Ten Years After?

Undeed Album. second song... its better than this...

but Duane is a better guitar player...

  • i want this to be my ringtone can someone please help?

  • @IvanThe2Terrible phonezoo

  • sorry mate but there's a more insane and better duane allman lick near the end of his solo in the live version of whippin post

  • I have to say, the playing he does leading up to this little hammer-in-place fest is much much better, shows far more style, finesse and tonal quality as well as being melodious, but I'm not gonna flame you for your taste. This 'lick' is more like a rest stop as he was running out of steam. Slide was his true gift anyway.

  • I've been playing this lick for years whenever there's some nice chick in the front row. No cheaper gimmick available really for any mediocre guitar player (which I'm not of course)

  • sounds like four notes in a loop. I saw him live, front row, and I'm here to tell you he had a lot of better licks than this.

  • Not even close to his best. I've heard riffs that were way better than this and much cleaner too. Learn your music.

  • lol good one. you got me there

  • This is so sloppy it got to be Jimmy Page playing

  • Duane's best lick ever? ...were you dropped on your head when you were a baby???

  • man, that makes my hand tired just to listen to it! fry that sucker, Duane! or Dicky?

  • @originaltbyrd Duane ;)

  • that lick is not tough or memorable what-so-ever

  • gsergyuko c'mon pud knocker give us some more of your infinite wisdom, you fucking crap sack !

  • Hey boys this isn't Duane or dickie, it's old gsergyuko thats who is playing this in 1969 too !!! wow what an asshole !

  • So you are admitting you have no ideas on the guitar, maybe if you took your self away from buff guys wrestling you fruit ,then you could get an idea or better yet a clue you cock head!

  • Vaveon you're wrong. If you really knew guitar technique then it wouldnt take
