  • This song so so deserves all those waves, well done you! XXXXX

  • Perhaps one of the best pop-rock musicians of all times...

Tal vez uno de los mejores músicos de pop-rock de todos los tiempos ...

  • I was at the Gerry Rafferty tribute concert on 22nd of Jan 2012, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. One of the most moving parts of that event was when Martha, Gerry's Daughter, and her six cousins sang this song. The way they harmonised together was spell binding. I'll never forget it. Fo4all - this video is perfect for this song. A great tribute in itself.

  • 9 people have no soul

  • From the epic City To City album, a track that is every bit as good as the more well known Baker Street. I just think this song is so wonderful, often play this back to back with The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot.

  • I love Jerry & I love the sea - this song is brilliant and your vid Fol4all is excellent... WOW.

  • Shivers down the spine; just realised tonight that there are at least three of Gerry's that do that.I'm off to listen again - pink floyd you have a rival.

  • Whenever I hear this, I think of the Irish shore, not that Ive ever been there, must be the bagpipes, lol

  • This is one of my favorite song by him...R.I.P. Gerry!

  • You did a wonderful work. Since many months I have listened often to this and watched the waves. Thank you!

  • @Aryleia Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching & listening to Gerry Rafferty's gem! Another suggestion: Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. I've done some videos to their music, which is sublime.

  • if l had done what this fine musician has done in his lifes tenure,, then l would be so content,, but not gerry, the guy was a bloody genius,,and l mean that in every way you care to put it,,,bless you man you made my life in 78 so tolerable city to city,,,,say no more,,,

  • This is a sublime soulful anthem that makes one dig deep into the very meaning of life! Why am I here and where am I headed? With this one Gerry Rafferty outdid himself. May love & peace reign in the world!

  • What a fantastic song! Really appleals to my Scottish roots. I always associate it with sailing with my wonderful late father in law, who became a father to me when mine died at an early age. I love you, Roy. Thanks for being there for me. Thank you for posting this song, as it brings back so many wonderful memories of the joys I have had in my life. Really miss Gerry Rafferty. The lyrics in his song are forever etched in my mind, giving me strength, understanding, and an appreciation of life.

  • My favorite hymn.

  • IT BROKE MY HEART TO LEARN TO GERRY CROSSED OVER THIS YEAR...I LOVED HIS TUNE'S SINCE I 1st HEARD HIM...I HAVE THIS ALBUM & NOW I GUESS I'LL FRAME IT! HE DESERVED MORE THAT HE GOT IN THE MUSIC IND:

GOD BLESS HIS FAMILY & FAN'S...

  • hell of a song ...brilliant, have been a long time fan of Gerry Rafferty..can someone come up with the names of the band on this track (and others) they are fantastic - I realise i should know, but have fogotten. Due to age. I suspect...! Gerry Rafferty could do no wrong

  • @jonb0002 Just click on "Show more" right under the video window; Fol4all names the band for you. And yeah, they're fantastic.

  • Quite simply sublime...like the rest of the album...i read a review of it when it came out..the guy said it had a couple of good songs and the rest was filler...and it was too morbid....obviously a cretin of the highest order

    Jim

  • Not many YT vids have 0 dislikes. A testament to the talent of Gerry Rafferty.

A great song, and a good man to boot.

    RIP Gerry.

  • maaan what a beautiful stuff....

  • Quality!! Another classic from one of the best albums ever made.

With your untimely passing the dark night may come down on us - but your music will always provide a bright, guiding light. Thanks Gerry, rest in peace.

  • I just found out today. His music got me through some tough times. He was a great gift to us all.

  • Gerry lives on in my heart, my mind, and his music. Rest In Peace :,^(

  • Never heard this song before...wonderful. What a voice and talent--what a loss!

  • gerry rafferty from my home toon in paisley rest in peace

  • Gerry accompanied me throughout the past 25 years - every one of his songs-lyrics - his voice like velvet - gave me peace - absolute grand music!

I shall be praying for him and his family - may they all come to peace with the load they have to carry - what a great man -. Any person with a mind like his has some dark corner - soooo sad that he was not able to overcome. But he shall live forever in his ongoing and forever living music - Mahalo from Hawaii -

  • unique voice

  • I am touched by the passing of Gerry. He's a unique voice, and even though I only own City To City, I still feel his passing deeply. I have had three beers so far tonight in homage to Gerry.

Everyone secure your Al "Year Of The Cat" Stewart fix. He's the next to bite it, I fear.

  • My fav Gerry Rafferty song , brings back many memorys for me from when i was a young musician in london

  • It's bewildering to think now much Gerry's music has touched me in so many ways. As hobbyist guitar player I have always considered him a top ten all time great. As my eyes tear may his family members know he will be missed by many. R.I .P Gerry

  • An incredible musician was lost. Thank you for a lifetime of wonderful memories.

  • RIP GERRY! You will live on in our hearts.....

  • RIP GERRY! You will live on in our hearts.....

  • I had forgotten how beautiful this song is. I still have "City to City" on vinyl. From day one, I"ve never let the memory of Gerry Rafferty or his music escape my mind. "Baker Street" is in my top five favs. This man was brilliant. Aloof and sadly disillusioned from the life on the road. . .but his talents and music will last as long as people listen. This song is hauntingly mesmerizing. He knew how to capture the spirit of life with his words and music. Blessed be forever.

  • I was born in '78 and have loved Gerry's music for 17 years now. I actually was introduced to his music by a friend who was recommended this album by a channelled dead guy who said this music described his death experience. I am sorry for our loss, but am also reminded of our non-duality.

  • R.I.P...Gerry....Your now bringing your talents to that wonderful Rock And Roll Heaven Band...Undeniable Talent...Heaven will greet you with open arms....

  • It's a great lost now Gerry can't make no more great songs, as he did the last 40 years. I was a fan from Gerry Rafferty since the beginning of his career and his voice and songs accompanied me throughout the last 4 decades, they only brought good things for me and my family. I and many with me hope that mr. Gerry Rafferty will never be forgotten, I for sure will miss him and his music very much and that makes me so sad. May he rest in peace.

  • It's a shame that the media only mention Baker Street when Gerry has written and performed such great songs as this. I'm sure his music will go on to inspire and influence many people in the generations to come.

  • Boy I loved this song, even more then Baker Street. LIft a glass to the guy. RIP

  • RIP Gerry. :-(

  • RIP

My dad took me to see him when I was too young to appreciate it, I always thought I would get to see him again one day. A very sad day and a great loss :'(

  • I feel soo sad. One of the geatest has left us. But we´ll have his music and beauty of his voice forever. R.I.P ... As long as I´ve got your love, you know that I never leave ...

  • One of Gerry's best songs, lovely harmony. He left us many great songs....

  • R.I.P. Gerry. This song is THE song of one very happy and cherished memory .

  • sad to hear the news. Thanks for the wonderful tunes. I'm going to learn to play "The Ark" immediately and include it in our repertoire in your memory. RIP Gerry

  • You found your ship to take you away. Have a save journey my friend. You guided me into my musical life. Thank you for all your musical diamonds you gave the world.

  • @MultiEef I'm seriously pissed off at this news.

  • I sang this song to my father as he lay dying. He loved sailing and hearing me sing.

RIP, Gerry. Thanks for all the music.

  • Rest in Peace Gerry.

Your music is and will always be a treasure.

  • I don't care how many times I listen to this song, it has the same marvelous effect each time. It's the best ever....the pinnacle of Celtic rock. I pray Gerry will stay with us, but if it's his time, the Lord has a wonderful place for him, I know.

  • BTW the song was posted on the day my uncle died, and another aunt gave birth to a nephew!

  • Yes you deserve a thumb up for the post... there you go...

  • @MammutGameplay Thank you. It's my honor to post it.

  • Fantastic, beatyful tune, both lyrics and music, The guitarsolo is one of the most beatyfull I've ever heard. Thanks Jerry Donahue.

  • Such a great video. Thank you so much. This is my favorite Gerry Rafferty tune. Absolutely beautiful video

  • This is an incredible masterpiece.

  • Everyone pray for this incredible singer, songwriter, composer, and musical genius. There are few musicians of the 1970's, early 80's that had the creativity of Gerry Rafferty. It's terrible that he is in such poor health.

  • "Gerry is in a Hospital in Bournemouth, Dorset, suffering from liver failure, he is listed in critical condition and not expected to make it. Pray for him and his family. "

  • may the sacred heart of Jesus be praised, blessed adored and glorified now and forever.amen Please say this prayer nine times a day for nine days,,,,, he gave us many more,

  • RIP Gerry. Thank you for all the wonderful musical memories. You will be sorely missed.

  • @Fol4all RIP Gerry. It is a sad sad day today. Gerry's songs, especially this one are timeless and have been present with me throughout my life since the 70's. I am very very saddened by his passing. Condolences to his family and thank you Gerry for the musical scores you have given mine and countless lives on this planet. I have very special memories attached to a lot of his songs. Now his memory will live on in the same.

  • @Fol4all

Praying is pointless but go ahead...although it's to late for GR anyway.

  • @rehabwales Do take your ugliness elsewhere. It's not needed here. Or anywhere, really. I am so sad for you.

  • @AnnHattieAnn Yawn, No need to be sad for me I live a very happy, contented life.

  • @Fol4all

    So sorry to report...

Gerald "Gerry" Rafferty (16 April 1947 – 4 January 2011) was a Scottish singer and songwriter best known for his solo hits "Baker Street", "Right Down the Line" and, with the band Stealers Wheel, "Stuck in the Middle with You".

Rest in peace Gerry - this song is how I will remember your music... sublime.

  • One of the greatest, Gerry is in a Hospital in Bournemouth, Dorset.

Suffering from liver failure, he is listed in critical condition and not expected to make it. Pray for him and his family.

  • This song heals my soul! It gives me comfort so that I can sleep at night! As a former paratrooper, i've seen things that have scarred my soul. Right after I got married....there were nights where my wife would have to pin me down, sitting on my chest. She hated having music playing at bed time...well after a few of my episodes...she learned to deal with it! The Good Lord blessed us with Gerry Rafferty! And I am blessed with one incredible wife....my best friend!

  • @EricBBrandon1 Amen! And thank you for your service.

The song "The Ark" in 1978 - I could not get enough of listening to it.

A couple more suggestions: "Gentle Soldier of My Soul" by Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer... and really EVERYTHING by Dave & Tracy has magic.

Another new favorite is "In Times Like These" & "Darkest Hour", by Arlo Guthrie. I used some of the same footage from Ocean Shores WA.

  • @EricBBrandon1 ...A great Soldiers song is "Christmas in the Trenches" by John McCutcheon, that I also have up.

As for one to just plain raise the spirits, I just uploaded Stan Rogers "The Mary Ellen Carter'

    Enjoy, and take care.

    Murphy/Seattle

  • @EricBBrandon1 ,nice to know she was there for you when you needed her,,at this moment gerry needs our prayers, some lovely people have given their lives for their country over the years,,its a great shame the survivers dont ever get the help they so richly deserve,,,

  • @EricBBrandon1

    Love and Joy to You!

  • Hey Eric, as an ex RUC man of 29 years, through the worst of the worst, losing family and friends, I can only say, youre not alone. And thank God for Gerry and his music, like you his music saw me through many bad and good times, but hey, shit happens man and there's nothing quite like having a good woman who's your love, your life and your soul mate, who can just sit back an enjoy. thx 4 you and your guys help over the years. and remember.. NONE SHALL DIVIDE !!

  • @EricBBrandon1 When Gerry Raferty died, I downloaded "City To City" and The Ark was definitely my favorite song. I read your comment about the tough stuff you went through, and I think about it every time I listen to this song. I'm sure you didn't mean to, but I'll probably remember your comment and your story for the rest of my life, as long as I hear this song.

  • @EricBBrandon1 ...I AM That soul! Just Feel what you commented SO much. Thankyou.

  • suuuper!Kojaca piosenka.Bardzo mnie Relaksuje.Dziekuje GARRY!

  • See the dark night has come down on us.......my only son has a deadly disease for which there is no known cure and requires both a heart and double lung transplants. God in his wisdom still has never left us. Gerry Rafferty's music is the closest thing to gods own voice as I know of or have ever heard.I have been a fan of his since the days of Steelers Wheel and continue to be. Thank you Fol4all for posting this. I have a little more peace in my heart listening to this. God bless.

  • Wow ! Gerry - A million Thanks for this album... one of the most enduring and wonderful albums of the last 30 years. Every time I hear one of these great tracks, I'm transported to another place where everything is cool and good.... a place where a man can enjoy a beer in peace, contemplate his life, and just forget about the world for an hour or so. Great stuff and Thank You !!!!!

  • it is a great album...i bought it for the second time a year ago...i like the waves you have put on here...thank you

  • joevs21001 raises a very valid question. Why has, Gerry Rafferty not been inducted into the, 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame' ?? It should have happened decades ago...but it also raises another question, would, Gerry accept it..?

    ....maybe 'aye, maybe 'nah

In any event, it's always a pleasure to listen to him, and I have done so for decades. Thanks Gerry

  • @Kramkat We need to do is start a plea to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to get Gerry inducted soon while he's still alive. I think Gerry would wholeheartedly accept it. Even being a recluse somewhat, I think he would accept it. He's trying to get his life back in order and just released that new Album recently. Wouldn't it be great to have Gerry do a live performance for the acceptance show! There are few musicians more deserving a place in the RRHofF than Gerry Rafferty.

  • @joevs21001 Gerry never needed a medal of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Anyway, it´s not a reference anymore. Gerry will live on forever, his voice will be traveling across our heart and our children´s hearts forever.

    RIP gentle voice, sweet Gerry.

  • @tchiritchou True words. I still think Gerry was never given the amount of praise and recognition he truly deserved. Gerry was without a doubt a musical genius which shows in his incredible music. I, and many others have truly been touched by his music. RIP Gerry. Your music will live on......

  • Great opener to his mega-selling album City to City (has a kind of dreamy/tranquil feel to it). Gerry's always been brilliant at merging so many different instruments together in his songs. Fine guitar work by american Jerry Donahue. I saw Gerry in concert 17 years ago and his band was excellent.

  • It's time. Gerry Rafferty should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This incredible musician has had a profound impact on society over the past 40+ years. From his beginnings with the Humblebums, to Stealers Wheel, and then onto his incredible solo career, Gerry is the REAL DEAL. This man needs to be accepted into the Music Hall of Fame with open arms. Thank you Gerry for your music!

  • I remember listening to "City to City" with my mom back when I was in Kindergarten, this was always my favorite song. Great stuff!

  • i love this song so much

  • I was hearing Gerry Rafferty's music when it was playing on FM radio in the

70's. I was 18, 19 years old when Right Down the Line, Bakers Street, etc were hits. Like most teenage years I was having a blast, first girlfriends, first everythings! IMO it is some of the greatest all time music/lyrics. I haven't listened to it in years but at age 50 now; it hits a sentimental nerve and brings back those same old feelings.

  • even though im 24 years old, and in a totally different generation to this music. i Love Gerry nothing better then popping a bottle off the shelf and grabbing your favorite tumbler having a straight drink with straight pure music such as this. its like a time machine traveling back to a time so simple and just soothing.

  • @tubehubing right on man! im the same way bro

  • i love that song its magical i feel that it speaks to my heart and the reathm has the same speed withe my breathing is magical relaxing....

  • I just bought a new turntable to hear that old LP again. One of the greatest songs - ever.

  • ah, i just luv this song.

Many and many thanks for giving us nice time lot of thanks gerry rafferty from Abdelghani Algeria

  • ipsis verbis from Lisbon

  • Gerry Rafferty is one of the greatest musician's of the last 35+ years. His unique voice and style of music are unmatched. There are very few (if any) musicans that have the style of music that Gerry Rafferty wrote, produced, and sung for the last three decades. His music is magical. Even young people today are discovering the great Gerry Rafferty. I had one the other day say "Who is this" when "The Ark" came on the radio. After saying Gerry Rafferty, they said they wanted his album.

  • @joevs21001 Rest in peace Gerry. You will be missed. Your music has touched so many of our lives over the years. So many more than you will ever know. Gerry was a very humble man who did not like being in the spotlight. He was a talent unmatched by many musicians of the modern day. He had such a gift in writing music that we could all relate to and that we still relate to to this day. Gerry's music has touched my life and i'm sure there are many others out there as well. RIP Gerry.

  • Pity vid can't stream properly. was nice

  • Pardon the mispelling, City to City

  • City to Coty is a top album of all time. Try North and South. He seemed to get a second wind on that album.

  • I felt so relaxed and energized after watching those crashing waves and listening to his voice. What a fantastic post, thank you =)

  • You are most welcome - my pleasure.

  • One of my favourite Rafferty's song...thanx for posting .

  • A song which wll stay forever !!!!!!

  • Thanks. That was a great album, City to City. Its especially good to listen to these 70's songs on a record player.

  • if everyone in the world bought gerry's albums the planet would be at peace " THIS IS A FACT " where ever you are gerry thank you for so much joy,we all love you man and hope your'e well. :-)

  • I love this track, but even more, my favorites are "Whatever's Written In Your Heart" and "The Island!"

  • whatever is written in your heart... listening to now... amazing.

  • Whatevers written in your heart is by far one of Gerry Rafferty's greatest musical accomplishments. Although he did have many others, "Whatevers written in your heart" is pure magic!

  • thanks for posting man good memories...i love island aswell...awesome

  • I remembered this song from when I bought City to City, but I guess I didn't appreciate it. Just a gorgeous piece of work.

  • Gerry left a mark on me when City to City 1st came out, I was 16 and I fell totally in love with this song. I felt like I met his soul in this song. I miss the days when Gerry felt this way and I hope that he makes it back from the dark road he currently walks. I love ya man!

  • Curious, but this bloke's voice reminds me of Don Henley and Glen Frey. Or do I digress?

  • Can't get enough of this song ^^ Really thanks for posting this ^^

    Nice Water over there ö

  • Man, it's totally my pleasure. Thanks to the powers that be for letting it remain up on youtube.

Of all the people who bought the "City to City" LP for "Baker Street" I wonder how many found this gem as the biggest reward of buying the album. For most who hear "Baker Street" on the radio, they have no clue of this song's existence! What a shame.

The wikipedia entry on Gerry Rafferty does not even mention this cut when talking about "City to City"!

Generation to come will shake their heads...

  • This video will lead to a purchase. The way I see it, you're doing marketing for a great musician I hadn't heart of before. Thank you sir.

  • Cool! It's a purchase that you will not regret. It sort of like giving someone a book that you loved - you sort of envy them for the opportunity to read it for the first time.

I know one of the others I have up ("Don't You Want Me" by Human League), EMI has left it up (I think that it's because the encoding job that I did on that was first rate - and I doubt they could do better *L* - IMHO), but EMI put a link to iTunes and Amazon to purchase it. I wish they would with this gem.
