@finconnaiseur111 Apparently this piece is considered as one of the "harder" virtuoso violin pieces and she played almost perfectly. And it makes her, you know "exceptional".
The first I heard this piece was on a Paganini compilation performed by Gidon Kremer. Since hearing Kremer's rendition, I have always used it as a benchmark to compare the performance of others playing the same piece. Midori's and Kremer's style of playing are so different: Kremer the gallant powerhouse of artistry and technical precision, and Midori with her graceful and elegant, near flawless execution. A clear case of apples and oranges and the individual flare of true craftsmanship.
@sk8channel100 Please don't compare the two. Midori displays a level of playing that far surpasses Chang's. You might as well compare a swan to a brick. I'll spell it out for you, Midori's the swan.
Yes, she is a very good violinist, but not enough credit has been given to the composer, Heinrich Wilhem Ernst. What a great forgotten violinist. For anyone interested in him check-out Aaron Rosand's recording of his concerto in F sharp minor, Op. 23. It's really good!
Her sound is clean, and her intonation is amazing! Yet I cannot stand her trills...* The way she uses her bow is CRAZY! :D Have to say it's a precious piece, played beautifully. I also happen to like the yellowish tone of her skin :)
I dreamt but never got to play a solo concert at Carnegie Hall as this little gal did. I only got to play in 2nd violin section in a 2nd rate small town symphony. Yes she plays bettern than me technically and even some artistically but I think I could do a better job of expressing beauty than she can, even with my unpolished playing.
Anyone else notice that the last joint of her fingers (the one with the fingernail) seems to be curved upwards unnaturally? I wonder if that irregularity helps her in any way...
@wakizashi333 Yes! I noticed that..i think it does help her..well but maybe its cause shes been playing all her life. I play too but sometimes even when i play with the very tip of my finger, it still touches the next string..but my fingers never curved and iv been playing for 16 yrs! lol...
True. But what makes this piece, and other like it from its day, is it was able to retain a melody throughout all of it. Many modern composers, in the vein of modernist movements, have often tossed aside melody in order to show of technical virtuosity or complex composition abilities. My personal opinion, anyways.
Agree in most cases, but some modern composers mix atonal, dissonant parts with melodies and lovely harmonies.with great efttect like Gubaidulina for instance.
I really love a lot of the spectral music composed by Murail, Grisey etc as well.
First time I have heard a performance of Midori and it is absolutely mind blowing! She brought out the multiple textures with such ease and soulfulness!
The make up seems to be calculated to be viewed from a distance and then it's appropriate. Most perfect live recording of this piece, although played under the pressure of her Carnegie debut. This special situation may partially explain why it seems to be a little bit "too controlled" ("boring" would be too strong) - although that certainly also has to do with her personal style (her recording of the Paganini caprices is a clear example).
