i built a guitar when i was thirteen... i had £150 which i spent on mahogany, birdseye and rosewood and the rest i did with my dads old tools. i bought the bridge, pickups and all the hardware 6 months later when i had enough, and now its my favorite guitar.
Hi Im thinking of making my own gibson les paul replica... I know what parts Im gonna use and how Im gonna assemle it but I dont know how you get the strings on... can anyone please help me ???
Got my bass done. Thanks so much for all your help. It came out really good, and plays very good. Did it old vanhalen bumble bee colors and stripes and a Gibson thunderbird body shape. Thanks Perry.
hi, nearly finsihed the majority of my guitar now, was wandering if you had the measurement for the depth for humbucker pick up routs, gibson style aswell as the depth of the ears of the pocket
Perry, I almost have my bass done, I built it from watching your videos, and it looks pretty good so far, just need to paint it. I hope it plays good. Thanks cause I learned almost everything from your videos.
One more question , when you put the neck on should it be level or should it have a small tilt down or up. I was told to put a small tilt up to help to not fret out. You I trust. This person not so much. Thanks
@r7mart I use a water base transparent air brush paint that I purchase from an art supply store. I seal the wood first with clear Lacquer, after the color is applied I cover with about five to six coats of clear Lacquer sanding in between coats with 600 grit wet sand paper.
That was god, and of course everyone has their opinions on how to do their own projects. but i just thought id point this out. use a block of wood on top of the bridge mounts when your setting them in, cause you dont want to mess up the face, especially if you decided to paint it before (I paint it after) and I dont agree with the dark blue paint job. but other than that, it was very good!
wow thats so cool. im 14 and i'm thinking about building a guitar but i have no place to work. is there like a guitar studio i can go to to work at or something?
4 sumone like u its gonna be kinda easy because u all ready have the perfect guitar shape an other guitar parts so u can trace it but 4 me im workin on a guitar right now and its getting kinda hard, but great guitar still though
So i too am making a guitar but i don't have a surface planar handy. any suggestions? should i just go all natural and use a level, ruler and some sandpaper?
I'm 16, and 'm also building a guitar! (It was meant to be!) It's for a woodshop project where we make whatever we want out of scraps. (Although I admit, the body wasn't exactly scrap... don't tell my teacher!) I'm making a Les Paul, so it's one heavy beast. It's solid maple, 4 laminated strips covered by a maple top. The neck is mahogany, and the fretboard will probably be walnut. It's cool to see another person my age doing the same as me! Cheers, and wish me luck! :P
@IwarnU1617 well..not exactly... yes you can get a good guitar for like half the price you may pay to make one...but you can put pickups/other parts in it you would never get out of that store bought guitar adn you would get to have the pride of showing off to your friends what you did
you can also put custom pickups into a a guitar you bought in the store...it just takes really good skill to do all that re-wiring .. i put custom pickups on my BC Rich
Nice job, and also very nice vids from Guitwild. As a guitar builder myself, many of these procedures are very good and done the right way. There are shortcuts to some of the routing, but setting up the fences/barriers works also.
I suggest.. use a flexi glass/acrylic plastic for your guitar pattern, match better if you learn basic computer graphics design (corel draw) for your designs and lay-out , and finally use 1 pc. Wood not 4 pcs. Because of the glue the solid tone of wood its not good, remember this is a guitar not a furniture . Good luck!
i dont know you guys but i never paint the neck pocket :) i heard that a wood to wood contact joint is much better for tone? i dont think it matters much but i do it. do you know if its true?
yeah true. thats why i rout my neck pockets where you have to use force to get the neck in. and when its in you can hold up the guitar without glue :-P its almost like a neck through or set neck
you shoulda done a set neck instead of a bolted neck. but other than that everything is kick ass, definitely when ur a 16 yr old kid makin guitars....hes gonna make the next big gibson guitar sometime in the future :D
You'r right, I should have search for it :P Sorry if I sounded like a dighead, I really like your movies. (Maybe I had a bad mood yesterday:P) Rock on anyway :D
It's a shame that even when he has such a big workshop, he doesn't build his own necks... (or he just doesn't show to us...) I mean, yeah, great job, but the neck is like the hardest part...
The age doesn't have to do with making guitars by the way...
Before I get to stupid with my comments... I want to say that this is a good film where every step of building guitarbodies has been shown, nice job.
very Very true I built a guitar when i was 14 using hand tools took me for ever. Its not that hard it takes patience and it can be done with hand tools. I only used a belt sander and a dremel tool the rest I did with hand tools. Having those tools I could have made a bloody double neck.
woah that would have been really hard work, but how on earth did you cut out the pickup and neck cavitys,if i wanted to make a guitar it would probably be made with hand tools
Is it enough with one tee nut, isn´t it much esier if you have 2 tee nuts, If you have one tee nut Isn´t it hard to get the neck strait so it doesn´t tilt sideways?
It took john in my work shop 3 weeks on and off he only worked on it when I could film it, But all the hand sanding and there was alot of it, he did at home
oh ok, thank you. i wanted to know how long it would take to see if i can get it done before summer :D
and one more question, (sorry im kinda new to all this guitar making XD)
how do you know how to and where to position the tune o matic bridge and stop tail piece? (like the ones in gibson's LP) they seem a bit angled and idk how to do it.
Nice guitar...Im only 14 and im trying to make my own guitar too...Its gonna be a Les Paul with a Flying V tail...now I just need the money....But the plans are already going (I hav some1 helping me)
excellent job i adore the gibson and ibane combination idea. i am 15 and am making at slow pace a flying v guitar body. problem is i am saving for the professional tools to complete it. i also used some free wood from an old table. i think i will start again once i have better materials
cheers guys, the vid makes it look so easy.
