  • cheers guys, the vid makes it look so easy.

  • where did you get the neck from????????????? please i'm trying to make a rick copy bass and i need a neck like that

  • i built a guitar when i was thirteen... i had £150 which i spent on mahogany, birdseye and rosewood and the rest i did with my dads old tools. i bought the bridge, pickups and all the hardware 6 months later when i had enough, and now its my favorite guitar.

  • umm i hardly have any of those tools is there a way to do it with out as much like a saw and a sander XD

  • i was 14-13 my first build and all i had was a jig saw and a borrowed a router...Geto much

  • Hi Im thinking of making my own gibson les paul replica... I know what parts Im gonna use and how Im gonna assemle it but I dont know how you get the strings on... can anyone please help me ???

  • Got my bass done. Thanks so much for all your help. It came out really good, and plays very good. Did it old vanhalen bumble bee colors and stripes and a Gibson thunderbird body shape. Thanks Perry.

  • @r7mart Very Cool, Now send me a photo please. I'm am putting together a home made guitar wall on the new GUIT WLID GUITARS web site.

    Perry

  • hi, nearly finsihed the majority of my guitar now, was wandering if you had the measurement for the depth for humbucker pick up routs, gibson style aswell as the depth of the ears of the pocket

    thanks

  • Perry, I almost have my bass done, I built it from watching your videos, and it looks pretty good so far, just need to paint it. I hope it plays good. Thanks cause I learned almost everything from your videos.

  • @r7mart That is really great please send me a photo when your Bass is complete.

    Perry

  • where are you stationed? do you give classes?

  • @Mr Gunman 1955 Bridgewater N.J. No I don't give classes, but there are many Luthier Schools.

  • When adding the neck should there be any tilt up or down, or should it be level.

  • @r7mart The neck may have to be shimmed.

  • One more question , when you put the neck on should it be level or should it have a small tilt down or up. I was told to put a small tilt up to help to not fret out. You I trust. This person not so much. Thanks

  • Good job, as always best videos, what kind of paint do you use.

  • @r7mart I use a water base transparent air brush paint that I purchase from an art supply store. I seal the wood first with clear Lacquer, after the color is applied I cover with about five to six coats of clear Lacquer sanding in between coats with 600 grit wet sand paper.

  • how long did this whole process take? just curious btw awesome job!!!!

  • @charbokful It took him a couple weeks

  • That was god, and of course everyone has their opinions on how to do their own projects. but i just thought id point this out. use a block of wood on top of the bridge mounts when your setting them in, cause you dont want to mess up the face, especially if you decided to paint it before (I paint it after) and I dont agree with the dark blue paint job. but other than that, it was very good!

  • Hahahaha i have an sg lol

  • @asf1187 awesome guitar the Gibson SG

  • what router bit did u use for rounding the sides?

  • You can make a built-in neck can´t you?

  • im trying to build a jackson rr but im having problems, could you help me?

is in the fret board i wanna make a 24 fret guitar and the scale legth is 25-1/2 but i cant find the right size where the fret wire goes.

  • wow thats so cool. im 14 and i'm thinking about building a guitar but i have no place to work. is there like a guitar studio i can go to to work at or something?

  • 4 sumone like u its gonna be kinda easy because u all ready have the perfect guitar shape an other guitar parts so u can trace it but 4 me im workin on a guitar right now and its getting kinda hard, but great guitar still though

  • i built one one when i was 15 and is the best guitar i have. maybe because i made it but still haha

  • So i too am making a guitar but i don't have a surface planar handy. any suggestions? should i just go all natural and use a level, ruler and some sandpaper?

  • @picklesfreaked You could not use a veneer

  • I'm 16, and 'm also building a guitar! (It was meant to be!) It's for a woodshop project where we make whatever we want out of scraps. (Although I admit, the body wasn't exactly scrap... don't tell my teacher!) I'm making a Les Paul, so it's one heavy beast. It's solid maple, 4 laminated strips covered by a maple top. The neck is mahogany, and the fretboard will probably be walnut. It's cool to see another person my age doing the same as me! Cheers, and wish me luck! :P

  • @PuddleOfMudd25 Send me a photo when your Guitar is done

    Perry

  • @PuddleOfMudd25 I am too! Im almost done with my rhein-style vee

  • Might I ask how much your surface planer cost?

  • This was a hand me down, but they run around $300.00 to 400.00 at Home Depot or Lowes and they are better than this one.

  • the "shredding" at the end was LOL:)

but great stuff though, wish I had the skill and tools to do it...

  • John was just learning how to play at that time. I'm sure we have all been there even you. LOL :)

  • I wanna make something thats a mix of a jackson RR and a BC Rich warlock,

ill call it the jackrich randy warrhoads LOL

  • i wanna make an esp viper shaped guitar

  • I am 16 and build guitars too! Who is this guy? We need to talk. Check out my vid of my guitar!

  • it costes much less to just buy a good guitar and then customize it

  • @IwarnU1617 but the feeling isnt the same, actually that feeling im talking about is worth the price you pay to build a guitar

  • u dont need to buy a good guitar you could buy a cheap one replace the bridge tuners and pickups and refinish

  • @IwarnU1617 well..not exactly... yes you can get a good guitar for like half the price you may pay to make one...but you can put pickups/other parts in it you would never get out of that store bought guitar adn you would get to have the pride of showing off to your friends what you did

  • you can also put custom pickups into a a guitar you bought in the store...it just takes really good skill to do all that re-wiring .. i put custom pickups on my BC Rich

  • well. not so much skill as knowing how to do it...but yeah you could do that

  • but you dont have as much pride, and you cant say " i built this myself

  • Send pictures of your guitar.

  • la cago.... buenisimo un aplauso...

  • awesome.!!..Happy New year... *\o/*

  • Nice job, and also very nice vids from Guitwild. As a guitar builder myself, many of these procedures are very good and done the right way. There are shortcuts to some of the routing, but setting up the fences/barriers works also.

  • I love Comments like this. You shouldn't make negative comments if you are clueless, It's better to keep your mouth shut and learn

  • @guitwild haha i couldn't agree more with you on that, I'm looking into building my own explorer but i just need the funds

  • Comment removed

  • I suggest.. use a flexi glass/acrylic plastic for your guitar pattern, match better if you learn basic computer graphics design (corel draw) for your designs and lay-out , and finally use 1 pc. Wood not 4 pcs. Because of the glue the solid tone of wood its not good, remember this is a guitar not a furniture . Good luck!

  • Thanks for your comments. This site is finally working the way I hoped it would, alot of information sharing.

    Perry

  • 4 piece body!

  • Age is not important

I also started building guitars at 16 and it was an acoustic one... be humble please

  • i gues its pre easy when you got all the right tools (not easy but yea)

  • i dont know you guys but i never paint the neck pocket :) i heard that a wood to wood contact joint is much better for tone? i dont think it matters much but i do it. do you know if its true?

  • I have never heard of this. I like to finish the neck and Pocket because it makes the pocket tight. Nothing is worse than a sloppy neck pocket.

  • yeah true. thats why i rout my neck pockets where you have to use force to get the neck in. and when its in you can hold up the guitar without glue :-P its almost like a neck through or set neck

  • you shoulda done a set neck instead of a bolted neck. but other than that everything is kick ass, definitely when ur a 16 yr old kid makin guitars....hes gonna make the next big gibson guitar sometime in the future :D

  • at least he built a guitar, that's pretty good.

  • Are it your movies btw XD :P Well for the person who made the movie: Nice vid...:P

  • You'r right, I should have search for it :P Sorry if I sounded like a dighead, I really like your movies. (Maybe I had a bad mood yesterday:P) Rock on anyway :D

  • It's a shame that even when he has such a big workshop, he doesn't build his own necks... (or he just doesn't show to us...) I mean, yeah, great job, but the neck is like the hardest part...

The age doesn't have to do with making guitars by the way...

Before I get to stupid with my comments... I want to say that this is a good film where every step of building guitarbodies has been shown, nice job.

  • if you look at his other vid he dose but its been a month so your proble alrady know lol

  • @Explorerrule You should watch some of the other Guit Wild Videos, You can learn how to build a neck.

  • hey for any1 wanting to do this but dont have the tools just take C.D.T / wood work at school and ask to build a guitar for your exam!

  • What size should the drill bit have for the bridge? please awnser.

  • depends on the size of the bridge

  • yeah..but 16 year old john blackwood has access to an assortment of expensive woodworking tools

  • very Very true I built a guitar when i was 14 using hand tools took me for ever. Its not that hard it takes patience and it can be done with hand tools. I only used a belt sander and a dremel tool the rest I did with hand tools. Having those tools I could have made a bloody double neck.

  • woah that would have been really hard work, but how on earth did you cut out the pickup and neck cavitys,if i wanted to make a guitar it would probably be made with hand tools

  • @mjdvids1128 Built my first when I was 15. I built the neck too :)

  • wats exact position of the bridge?

  • it's in the video

  • haha wow i would love to make a guitar at yur shop that would be awesome! that is one lucky guy

  • Is it enough with one tee nut isn´t it better with 2 tee nuts??

  • ask Fender they have been using one for years

  • Is it enough with one tee nut, isn´t it much esier if you have 2 tee nuts, If you have one tee nut Isn´t it hard to get the neck strait so it doesn´t tilt sideways?

  • If you tilt the neck, can you screw the neck on, isn´t it a little air space between the neck and the neck pocket?

  • the tee nut screw is what the neck will rest against when youn tighten up the neck mounting screws, The neck should not move.

  • oh yea, and how long did it take did john take to build his guitar? :D

  • It took john in my work shop 3 weeks on and off he only worked on it when I could film it, But all the hand sanding and there was alot of it, he did at home

  • oh ok, thank you. i wanted to know how long it would take to see if i can get it done before summer :D

and one more question, (sorry im kinda new to all this guitar making XD)

how do you know how to and where to position the tune o matic bridge and stop tail piece? (like the ones in gibson's LP) they seem a bit angled and idk how to do it.

  • lol. but 16 year old john has all these equipment!!!

    14 year old alex doesn't... D:

lol. where could i find these tools just to use?

  • Do you have Wood Shop at School? That is where I built my first Guitar.

  • lol. yea, i do have wood shop but i can't take that class. i'd love to, but the thing is i'm being forced to take more academic classes. DX

  • I have found most hardware stores are willing to do the majority of the actual cutting for very cheap

  • really? wow. thanks superjesus. :D

well ima go try and see if lowes or home depot can get it cut for me. my wood came in today!!! im so excited to build my guitar X]

thanks everyone for your constructive feedbacks :D

  • I loved how it was turning out but did not like the headstock.

I have one question though, How do u make the curves around the "horns" of the SG?

  • Nice guitar...Im only 14 and im trying to make my own guitar too...Its gonna be a Les Paul with a Flying V tail...now I just need the money....But the plans are already going (I hav some1 helping me)

  • he did an awsome job! but i'm not diggin the white pick ups.

  • im almost 15 and i amd 3/4 done with me neck thrue, with fender swinger body!

  • excellent job i adore the gibson and ibane combination idea. i am 15 and am making at slow pace a flying v guitar body. problem is i am saving for the professional tools to complete it. i also used some free wood from an old table. i think i will start again once i have better materials

  • its good to see him with all of that protective equipment on!!!! need that hearing to play that new guitar!! looks great! :)

we need to hear it :(

  • lol I'm 16.

I want to make my own guitar too.

But i Don't have the tools

How much money does it take to get everything like the drill, clamps, sanders, etc?

  • Try Wood Shop at School, That is where I Made my first Guitar.

To buy your own equipment can be expensive though. I have about $1,200 invested so far, I bought a lot of equipment used

and some of it isn't the most expensive availbe.

Thanks for watching and good luck.
