The only thing that really botched this movie was the silly 'earth-isms'..Sure we all swear and make funny symbols with the hands, but to see it copied in a movie as if an visitor would actually do it was childish. Otherwise, Jeff nailed it..and so did Karen..Very 80's..Love it!

I think that the story line and the directing was fantastic including the performances of Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. Interesting points are that the alien presented itself as an orb (not of flesh) then cloned the DNA of a human so as not to create fear of an alien. Appearing in human form to Jenny was crucial to the alien's success. I am a little disturbed about the governments reaction to an alien visit...after all, in the movie, we did invite them to come,

Why hasn't anyone made any comment concerning the subject matter of the movie? It seems as if there is no coordination within the same government. One part of it sends out greetings to anything or anyone in the far reaches of the solar system and when it responds by dropping by for a cold one, the other side of our government tries to shoot it down. We must seem really crazy on the top side and at the worst we appear deceitful.

Whoever made the synopsis in the free-movie section watched this movie with his back. "Having crashed to earth" is a bit different from what the first 5 minutes and later movie dialog say.

A classic. IMO Carpenter's best work. Originality, humor, a cohesive plot, a great script, and wonderful acting. No tired old zombies, vampires, etc. The film stands up to the finest standards or Sci-Fi, e.g Spielberg's E.T. --- Thanks for the upload. My only complaint would be a short section of the film that is missing at the beginning when they suddenly transition into Karen's car in her garage, and Jeff is fully dressed. There is a segment of the film that wasn't uploaded.
