Great Song. One heck of an inspiration, Ben Folds is and always will be one of the greats! Please have a look at my channel and let me know what you think to my original songs and covers x JA x DiscoKiss
My husband sang this and played the piano part at our wedding instead of doing a unity candle. It meant so much more to us. If you are a musical couple I highly recommend doing a song together to represent your unity.
@deadlytoque: It was perfect - I had originally just planned to use a piano instrumental of Edith Piaf's "Hymne a l'Amour", but then 3 nights before the wedding, I was up late futzing around on the internet and found this song, with the lyrics, and I just cried my eyes out - I immediately e-mailed my cousin the link (she was taking care of the processional music) and had her change the plan to use this song. The lyrics just suit my husband and I so perfectly. Good luck!
this song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. Someone so very close to my heart would always p[lay this around me. i love him dearly and this song just makes me think of him.
I am an accomplished musician, if I dare say so myself. And I absolutely love this song. My taste in music has matured to the level where I understand that there is beauty in simplicity. Some other musicians would do well to understand this as well. Though I believe Ben Folds could have done a little more with dynamic expression, I consider this one of my favorite songs. Sometimes it's not always the way it's performed, but how it was intended that makes a good piece great.

@Symphoniconductor good comment, I think you're right - I find this piece unique, in that the sentiment behind it seems to be built into the fabric of the song - the chord sequences, the lyrics - I think it would survive even the crudest interpretation and still get its message across and that to me is a good song.
Improvised or not, six chords or a thousand chords, it doesn't matter. What matters with this type of music is the over all meaning of the song and how the melody, harmony, and lyrics were formed to work together and bring the audience to a different place. Not how fast you can learn it, or how easy it is. Time to show a little maturity and respect.
its not what you play. its how you play it. if even one tear is in somones eye then you have played with meaning. you are alive. your music is beautiful
This really isnt one of his challenging ones that much, it just moves up and down the keyboard, the ones I have trouble with are, like, Landed, its not as easy as he makes it seem, the beat of the different hands through me off XD
I'm really not trying to seem like I'm great, but all of this song is improvised around 5 or 6 basic chords. If you understand the style that he was going for it would be extremely easy to get something like what he did.
Even if this piano piece is fairly simple, that should point to the genius of Ben Folds in inventing such a simple, moving song. Because this is genius.
As for the chatting, there's assholes all over the country. Sorry you're so simple-minded that you have to stereotype like that. "Jerk."
I went to see BF in Berlin last week. In the end I had to tell the two fucking loud Americans standing infront of me to SHUT UP. Pay 30 euros for a ticket and then chat through a gig, looking more at your mobile phones than the stage.
Its the ubiquitous presence of American jerks who HAVE TO shout "Whooo!" at the beginning of EVERY song, that gets under my skin. It roughly translates as "Oh I know this song, look how cool I am everybody".
so that's purely an American thing?...if it is please know that not all Americans are like that and some like me agree with your viewpoint. And last time I checked Ben Folds was American...please keep your insults less broad in scope and stereotypical in intention.
Hahahah. I love how Americans are the only ones who do this. I mean, of course they are. I bet if I looked up a gig somewhere in England, everyone would be stone silent. It is not "predominately" an American thing; EVERYONE does it.
Well at least Americans don't go up to Asian people on the street and make slanty eyes or speak fake Asian.
Yep, this happened in a European country. There are ignorant fucks everywhere, so be careful with your judgments.
Also, what's wrong with being excited about a song? I agree, it's obnoxious to talk through a concert but I think artists enjoy it when people know their songs.
You all do know that justgoingdownx is being sarcastic here, don't you? There are 3 "poor comment" things on this and a ton of "good comment" things on all the rest that talk about stereotyping being a bad thing.

I know he wrote the song you tard. The the only thing genius about it are the lyrics. The piano part could be played by a monkey and the melody is pedestrian.
You gotta see him in concert to appreciate.. awesome show.. totally outshined the late tori amos... now that she's totally digitally done.... she's no fun.. if he hadn't opened i'd of felt i wasted my 40 bucks.

well its true, and that is the way that most pop songs are, just a couple chords broken down and repeated over and over.
kramernator 2 years ago
You are correct. And who's to say that's a bad thing? Elton John improvises...he never plays a song the same way twice.
