  • Wow, Those were awesome.

  • Damn that is some old equipment, even for 2001.

  • I think it's an RS3K

  • S2M*

  • It really sounds like a S2N

  • Who originally owned the Alcos?

  • @TheZeke1974 3 C420's where ex-L&N, 1 was ex-N&W. They have 4 C424's that where ex-CP. The RS11's, and 36's are retired. Thanks for watching...

  • what do the 2 flashing lights mean (the ones under the windows)

  • @crazyfisherman2 These are called "gyralights", and they were the lights used for warning crossings, before alternating ditchlights were made mandatory. The MARC wide-cab hood units were the last ones that were equipped with these lights.

  • @BarrieBusesandTrains thanks for that, always wanted to know

  • Mak'in'em talk that talk!

  • Always did like the Apache Livery. Thumbs up.

  • y not add more power so they need to kill them like this

  • Wow! Hardly any smoke out of the stacks even though the locomotives are pulling hard! That ought to make the greens happy! LOL!

  • Whenever I see the video is from 1jackdk I know i'm gonna like it. Thank you for all your great videos.

  • Nice livery on those Alcos.

  • Horn is a Leslie SU3L. Similar to an S3L but with an underside mounting.

  • Those 251s cleaned up pretty good...once they got spooled up! Any of those ex-SP 7000s?

  • Those ALCO's are immortal!

  • Check out the flashing light on the nose. Pre-ditchlight warning lights still on those ALCO's.

  • Wonderful sitting at the lunch-table in cold and grey Germany I loved the ALCO-Sound and the rare clean diesels! Thanx for loading t up man!

  • can you stil train hop like you see in the movies?

  • Very cool, I'm a D&H alco fan

  • Nice, nice video! Sounds long gone from the class 1 railroads.. Some of the cleanest Alco power I've seen in a long, long time. Great sound as they were slugging it out on the grade, too! Thanks for shooting and posting this!

  • Nice train with nice power, good location, good angle, good equipment. FAVE

  • Superb video! That horn is almost same as the ones we find here in India on our ALCO-based locos! Great!

    Dheeraj,

    India.

  • sounds like a leslie s2m-

  • Lol, the train went past half an hour ago but you might aswell set up camp for the night. Your'e not getting accross the train tracks in a hurry.

  • not for sure but this almost sounds like an s3 horn but not sure

  • what kind of horn please?

  • @laphant Not really sure. Maybe someone else can help out with that question. Thanks for watching...

  • @1jackdk Leslie S3L-R

  • @1jackdk Leslie?

  • @1jackdk Its An Old Cast Nathan P3 is because the Posision of the Horn P2 Is backwards and more short the new cast si More Longer

  • Well is a little Sick Huh?

  • @laphant its either a prime 920 wich im betting it is, or its a very fouled leslie rs3l

  • @laphant S3L or S3K

  • @laphant nathan P-3 would be my guess

  • @laphant out of tune leslie rs3l

  • @laphant I think it is an RS2M, Leslie's most common 2 chime. Either that or an RS3L with the 25 bell fouled out.

  • @laphant Sounds like a leslie S2M

  • @laphant sounds like a nathan airchime because i hear horns like that from the diesels that run through my town but i could be wrong

  • @laphant Nathan P2 - just a guess.

  • @laphant

Sounds like an leslie rs3l or something very similar

  • @npadul30 It is a sick RS3. One of the horn's isn't sounding. These horn's are very tempremental at time's. Once they get some grime on the diaphragm plate, it will stop the horn from sounding like it should. I run a set on my truck and when they get dirty, it will sound like this with one of the horns not sounding,

  • @laphant that sounds like an rs3l but it is probably something else.

  • @laphant Sounds like a Leslie S-2M. A lot of our New Zealand locos have similar sounding horns

  • @laphant - the horn sounds like that of an Indian ALCO class loco....the WDM class

  • @laphant Train horn would be my guess

  • @laphant Unhealthy sounding Leslie RS3L

  • One of those runs through Little Rock on the old Rock Island route towars OK man it moves slow but cool to watch the rail line is Arkansas and Missouri RR. but they even have a maintance shop for them there cool locos!

  • all i can say is ya baby!

  • oh this sucks i lost my soundAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

  • must be nice to still see alcos in service...i dont know of any railroads near me that still use alcos :(

  • @JimboRailfan The nearest ALCO hawling railroad to you would be the A&M. I would like to get there one of those daysand see that. I think their home terminal is at Fort Smith ARK., and runs north 140 miles to Monett MO. Thanks for watching. Jack

  • My favorite engines and their famous ALCO smoke.

  • @1jackdk The A&M is based out of Springdale, Arkansas. I get out 2-3 times a year and their C420s are wonderful things, glorious sounding and beautifully maintained.

  • @1jackdk Jack, I know a short line railroad in my area 25 miles east of me who have 2 active Alco's 1 B30-7, 5 B23-7's, 2 C30-7's do you want to know the short line railroad name?

  • @csx2295 Yes! If its close enough I would like to check them out. Even those older GE's are enough to perk up my interest. You can send me a private email if you want. Thanks, and take care. Jackmp294...

  • @1jackdk The short line railroad near me in Jackson, Tennessee is West Tennessee Railroad I will send you the video of the engines that my friend posted online.

  • @csx2295 hey i work on all these old locomotives... Well more ge's than alco's but mostly emd and our companies hybrid. You probably have photos and video of NREX locomotves

  • @sloowburn I have photos on railroad picture archives website i am redoing them moving to another folder online it wont take a few seconds.

  • @JimboRailfan The SRNJ(southern railroad of NJ) Has an ex LV ALCO on their roster here in Jersey

  • Whoah, that sounds like a jet! I've never even seen an Alco before, and I think I like them already.

  • This is realy a fine span, working hard.

I'm amazed about the long lifetime of the ALCO engines on several railways trough the States and Canada, when you compare it whit the average time GE or EMD locomotives used on the main roads.

But that will be for sure a side effect that the ALCO company died long ago, so there is no merchandise of new loco's from that company with the possibility to turn in the old one's, so these railways stick by them as long as they are good.

  • The noise sounds an aweful lot like gas turbine engines

  • Fantastic video, love that horn! *****

  • Finally seeing those EX-CP 424's in action!! I caught them being shipped to your area in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the mid 90's, They were dead in tow on a CP westbound from Canada to Chicago..... They were just painted in the green and white and were spotless! Thanks for the video, glad to see them again!

  • what kind of horn is that? I think it's my fav one.

  • I can damn well understand the interest and appreciation that ALCO fans have of these machines, especially when I think about it.

  • It's hard to believe these machines are still being used to pull everyday long freight trains despite the company who made them has been out of existence for 40 years now.

  • thanks! me and my dad are taking a trip to Arizona and saw this railroad, and wanted to know some more about it.

  • Does this railroad still operate?

  • Yes Steve. I think maybe 4 days a week. Don't know that for sure, with the way the economy is now. But usually left Snow Flake around 11 am. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294

  • Dam, they sound GOOD.........

  • Well, unfortunately that's the economy we live in.

When the largest trucks were 40' long the railroads could maintain a great deal of their traffic. But now with massive trucks permitted on subsidized highways...it's harder and harder for railroads to remain in business.

As with all industries, eventually everything takes a hit. In particular personnel costs.

  • My grandfather worked 50-years for Southern Pacific Railroad. They gave him a pension for life and then to his wife after he died.

  • @Robert111 "They" didn't. The union got that for him. No US corporation ever gives anything to anyone.

  • @DeserTBoB93535 Probably true about the union and almost always true about U.S. corporations. Capitalism is of course based on greed motives, so you can't expect anyone to pay what they don't have to. Fortunately Obama is giving us a little more socialism than we've had in a long time.

  • good ol alco's

  • 1:48- is that ammount of leaning actually SAFE?

  • its fine. the track is canted (built with one rail higher than the other) round curves to help guide the trains round curves and reducing the wear on the rail. the higher rail is always on the outside of the curve.

  • of course its always on the outside, if it were the other way round it would force the train off

  • You can tell they have been working hard cos the puffs of smoke seen from 0:23 - 0:56 indicate that one of the units behind the front loco is "chirping" even though you can't hear it over the sound of the other locos

  • Sticking injector.

  • 0:44 Wobbling and bouncin'.

  • Real working Alcos and with Gyralights to boot. Great catch!

  • WHY DIDNT YOU Get the rest of the whole trains it would of been a lot better.

  • Why? Those kinds of videos are boring. The more action, the better!

  • Snow Flake is a kind of ironic name for that location, isn't it.

  • @AndreiTupolev - the town was named for AZ. Represenative Flake's great granfather.

  • Is the Apache Railway still using ALCO C420- C424's and how is the line dispatched?

  • Yes, they are still using the Alco's. As far as I know, the crew still comes on duty at Snow Flake AZ at about 8am, switches its cars and gets it south bound train ready Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri. and sometimes Sat. Leaves about 10-11 am for Holbrook. Gets into Holbrook to interchange with the BNSF anywhere between 1400 & 1600 ( 2-4 pm) then returns to Snow Flake. If you have a good map, there are plenty locations to photograph the train. Thanks for looking. Jack...

  • If I close my eyes real tight and use my imagination, I can almost see myself sitting in one of Metro North's Shoreline cab cars. Too bad this is much cooler.

  • Imaginations are a wonderful thing. Thanks for looking. Jack

  • when was this shot?!

  • April 23, 2001 it was shot.

  • cool - thanks

  • Nice gyralight. I hate them in snow, though. Hypnotizing!

  • Awesome!!!!!!!
