  • WTF, Romans ALREADY had Praetorian cavs? LOL

  • I feel old, I remember watching this exact episode on bbc.

  • If I had 10000 guns I would have killed 2 million

  • Where is the prince of Macedon when you need him??

  • ..."The teams plan is working"? the team didn't do f all, the computer set it all out for them...

  • Ironic, for once police officers are the ones being charged at by horses....

  • lynette nusbacher

  • I love this show. I trampled the Carthaginians every time always played as the romans. Just held the troops together and held my Calvary to counter attack the flanks after battle was joined.

Hannibal surrounded the entire army and slaughtered them leaving no room to move just die.

  • I like how women call cavalry horses lol

  • check out "denverstotalwar" on fb

  • @lfc4lyfdalton

u know that that was a year befor TWR cae out

  • Ha, ha. You people are funny. Arguing about realism in an entertainment show. It's not meant to be any more realistic than a game of Chess. Too many armchair generals ...most of us wouldn't even get over the Alps alive in the first place, let alone fight a battle at the end of it. Go read a history book and do some hiking?

  • "They got charged by some horses." I don't hold much hope. Let's watch on..........

  • To make it clear about why those cav won, this games was modded to make it more realistic and accurate as it would have a wider audience than the game itself. So yes it is RTW, however it is moded and changed to edited.

  • @colonellemon no its not RTW. its engine is based on RTW but the game was realesed after this show so...

  • The real Rome total war did have this much strategy and depth to it?

  • @demonduri Yes it does.

  • @demonduri yes sure

  • @demonduri No it didn't. Roman Total War is "Hold heavy infantry line, envelop with cavalry, win, rinse and repeat"

  • @lordyrch Try it online

  • @lordyrch maybe for you, on easy, i used ranged calvalry to get enemys to attack my walls of phalax, then watch them get chewed up by them, then i had normal foot solders charge their flanks to slap there shit up, i really didnt even need cavalry that much, just to gode ppl to attack or as a quick fix if my flanks were getting attacked, that and the classic ramming through a bunch of foot solders making them break rank and run

  • 2 units of equites should destroy those numedians... They are obviously overpowered with armor and exp

  • @deedeeke1991 i don't think so

  • Are they trying to tell us its the largest Roman army ever assembled?

  • I swear that two full units of equites would mash one unit of nubian cavalry in normal circumstances, especially because they charged anyday.

  • the issue here is more than one person is playing. not one kid and a mouse

  • I would slaughter those Guys!!!!

  • @lfc4lyfdalton my 2 year old son would of played better than them :L

  • C'mon guys- they're not gamers, their police officers that may never have played strategy games. Also, in RTW you knew more about the enemy than these people did

  • ( lol ) The gamers obviously don't know the rudiments of ancient warfare, much more about Cannae.

  • I dont recall Roman army at any point in history to use all their cavalry as the 1st wave. This is like a giant middle finger in the face of all Total War and strategy fans, saying : "look here, we are doing ridiculous stuffs but it's ok since you too dumb to realize".

  • These guys are idiot's i know whats happening all the time when i am playing a Total War game.

  • Soooo this must be a joke. Are you sure it's not just a four year old kid commanding the Catharginians?

  • God, I WISH Rome Total War required this much critical thinking and strategy.

  • @ThomasYorkshire It really does when you play it on the hardest difficulty with all the odds against you. I'm 15 and my friend's 16 and we've both studied the seven military classics of ancient China and played Rome Total War ridiculously well. We could probably beat princeofmacedon if the odds were even in any battle. In antiquity, commanders like Hannibal or Alexander the Great were only the best from a small class. The 1% best people at Starcraft could beat Hannibal easily.

  • Who controls the Roman army?

  • @BrodieLewin16 A person that works with the show.

  • i just wish this great series was in better quality :( but thanks anyway evilpuspin i'm really enjoying it! :)

  • i just wish this great series was in better quality :( but thanks anyway evilpuspin! :)

  • i just wish this great series was in better quality

  • im sorry, but it appears that this people don´t know nothing of strategy and Rome total war , since when there is cavalry strike on the opponents cavalry with infantry support, when the heavy infantry is far away? is the PC controlling the roman army?

  • Who are those clowns on the side of every Legionnary formation holding that pole? are they the Formation leader or some priest?

  • @CMDRFandragon There were the "Centurion" the formation leader. it was a very prestigious position.

  • When they're scouts got killed i was like *facepalm*

  • ouch, it really hurts to see them playing like this xD

  • Oh god, they are so horrible at Rome. They should have been using their cavalry to nuke the Velitaes before they could do anything. If the enemy presents you with a unit which totally sucks against cavalry, and that's wat you have, that's what you use.

  • Hahaha oh wow

  • No, they should have let cluny the scourge do this, not prince of macedon, he's way better, and he's english (this was shown on the BBC)

  • @rugbart11 Im fairly sure that they both have more talent at games like this in their little fingers than all these people put together...

  • If you loved this series like I did so many years ago - Check out this website to download them if you want :)

    .spsk12.net/historylabs/downloads

  • god my 6 year old son is better than these on rtw lol

  • Ahh the fun of deserters. Gets even better in m2tw when those timurid war elephants accompanied by a 10 dread general start riding into your crusader kingdoms.... thank god scotland has the english channel.

  • 0:30 "hey guys who are those guys over there?" "where?" "over there the guys riding towards...oh" +8 dead scouts

  • The cav should've used the ALT attack.

  • Guys guys, RTW online battles are basically Tactikk battles. The Strategy part is in the campaign. They use RTW to show us what happened in the fields of Canae.

THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT CANAE, NOT ROME -___-

So please stop saying that "they dont know anything about how to play rtw."

  • after the initial cavalry manouvres, they basically did nothing. no orders, no movement, nothing. crazy :|

  • when you need to destroy an opposing army

    WHO YOU GONNA CALL?

    Prince of Macedon!!!

  • @lfc4lyfdalton obviously there musicians they wouldnt know their ear from their arse

  • I bet you guys wish you can show these noobs how it's done?

  • @WojekSiren yeah, definetly, they suck,i could beat them with a unit of german berserkers, and im rubbish at the game XD

  • Im sure theres some guy controlling the romans here the ai us usualy dumb and predictable

  • They maked such stupid mistakes '-- they've missed a lot of strategy basics!

  • Generals charging into the frontlines and getting themselves killed? Yep, DEFINITELY rome total war.

  • they should just let the prince of macedone do this.

  • @jimswe It would be fun, some 8 guys against POM, and they all lose with a crushing defeat xD

  • @jimswe that would be overkill.

  • @jimswe Oh god, he'll rape them all!

  • looks like cops are incompetent dipshits all over the world

  • "Only one can win" - Nope, you can draw as well:P

  • @master1140

    would either side want to?

  • @MoonlitGamer No, but the point I was trying to make is that it's a possibility:P

  • @master1140 "only one can win" does not imply in any way that there cannot be a draw. It just means that they both cant win.

  • @Zofar It DOES imply that there cannot be a draw...read it "only one can win", the sentence itself sets the condition/effect that (repeat myself:P) only one side can win.

I see the perspective you have taken in saying that both sides cannot win (you can only have one winner) so in part, you are correct:)

We are looking at this from two points of view and are both right...

    1) Statement implies that a draw is impossible/not taken into account,

    2) Only one side or the other may win, not both.

  • @master1140 No, you're implying that someone HAS to win, which is not implied at all by the statement "only one can win" for example, if I were to say "Only one person is allowed to have this apple" it means that one person can have the apple, it does not mean, however, that one person has to take the apple. In the statement "only one can win" the world 'only' does not mean it's the only possible outcome, but rather it means that only one person is able to do the verb (which in this case is win)

  • @Zofar ok. (someone has to end this useless debate over nothing:P)

  • WTF how come a phalanx formation is charging while in phalanx mode?!

  • I guess your average Joe really doesn't study military history, let alone have a basic understanding of ancient warfare at all. Surround and envelope. It's that simple. Lol. Use the cavalry for hammer and anvil strikes. Works every time.

  • What kind of an idiot would leave his cavalry static? To be effective cavalry must be on the move.

  • I cringed as they forgot to counter-charge at the start :/ Great start :P

  • hannibal is an amazing genreal proably the 2nd greatest military leader evr alexander the great being number 1

  • Cliff the stiff.... and this guy is supposed to help keep order on our streets!

  • My main tactic in this game is charge them. Doesn't work :(

  • Do you folks also observe idiocy when watching these 'teams' get their arse handed to them on a E-platter ? ? ? If they put teams on TV , comprised of folks like most of us , this show would still be broadcast , and no doubt have spawned a few more , i.e. HALO ect...

tell me what you think ....

  • theyshould fight PoM they are using hasiti

  • Then make a cresent with the liyans from the sides and charge with cavalry from the rear.

  • Here is what they should have done. Gallic inantry in the middle flanked by the libyans. Hanibal in the middle to inspire the gallics becouse the gauls are unpredictable. When they won the cavalry fight they should have circled round and waited the Roman infantry to engage

  • Up until they got flanked they were definately doing the best Ive seen any team do aside from the family that fought the battle of stamford bridge

  • lol yeah, you are right.... but still fun to watch.

  • It's painfull to watch! My god!

  • why arent the contestants speaking on this episode, them stressin out is the fun part, especially as im a total war pro.

  • they started off beutifully but they should have used the mounted javilen men to lure the roman velites into the iberian infantry then move the pikemen up front with the mounted javilen me behind so they could assult the front then bring the gauls in from the side and the heavy calvary from the other side and the light calvary from the back.

  • lol. Its funny watching these noobs flounder about.

    "They're running away..."

    "Well turn them around then!"

It'd probably be helpful if they actually briefed these people on the game's mechanics before they started the battle.

  • It really does seem inconceivable that the commanders could have lost their hold on the battle so badly after their brilliant start with the cavalry, but we're considering this in hindsight and with a running commentary from an omnipotent voice over. Still, Cliff didn't really have a plan to deal with the Roman infantry from the beginning.

  • it's a shame this video is edited. I would love to see the undedited programme.

  • the light cavalry scouts got killed.

Doesn't that strike anyone as something that simply would not have happened?

  • Yeah. I was kind of confused as to how she could allow her one unit that she had the sole responsibility to control at the time die...

They probably staged a lot of this to look a lot more dramatic than it actually was.

  • lol

i've never played this game before but an odd thing I've noticed is that charges have no momentum and everyone simply stops as soon as the forces engage. That roman cavalry charge should have easily scattered the motionless Carthaginian cavalry

its like having your line in football 20 yards back and standing still, waiting for the other team to hit them

  • How so, bitch?

  • Arrrgggghhh!! letting your cavalry get sucked into an infantry battle..

  • total epic fail.

So simple too: phalanxes in the middle with decent core infantry covering their flanks, skirmishers out front to goad them into the middle, heavy infantry at the further flanks to charge in. As long as the phalanxes lock the romans in combat and can't get flanked, your cavalry can smash theirs and wheel in from behind, massacring the infantry.

  • I can almost understand: people with no knowledge of computer games and only a tiny knowledge of history thinking the Numidian cavalry are like medieval knights tough enough to charge heavy infantry head on and get away with it.

What I don't get is this "split in two" garbage: depends on the Romans falling for it and splitting their army to meet your two parts rather than staying together and crushing one. A strategy that a child can see the flaws in nevermind an adult. Defeat in detail indeed.

  • at around 5 mins the numidian cavalry should have taken more casulaties, they may be great fighters but they were charged by 2 units of cavalry taking a charge at the halt

  • how stupid are these ppl? why don't they read the unit description?

    "strong infantry" = hastati

"strong and disciplined cavalry" = Round Shields

I can't believe they mistook the Poeni infantry, which are kind of good, with the libyan spearmen, which suck ass

  • Oh yeah and I guess when they do Plataea they'll talk about how the Spartan Hoplites have two hit points, and how they can take two killing blows before they die. Or maybe they'll explain how units gain experience by killing more. And how the chevron system works. Or better yet maybe show them how to use the console function so that their archers shoot flaming rocks. The point of the show is not to showcase Rome: TW, its to use it to simulate something historical.

  • lol rtw addict alert, during the real punic wars it was the libyans that outshone the poeni conscripts

  • that was so stupid around 5:30... even in real life it's inmoral to stand waiting for an enemy charge to wipe you out...

  • Before even watching this video completely, I ask. Why simulate Battle of Cannae. I have little knowledge of history but Cannae is amongst the most ridiculously amazing battles of all times. It took Hannibal to pull of strategy never seen before. And now people who probably know little about warfare, and even less about this game just send everything they got head on? I mean, what? This you have to see this can't end well.

  • Well... One team did battle of Gaugamela. :D

Also, another team played as Hannibal at Trebia...

  • God Damnit Claire....

Never bring a woman to a man's fight.

  • With their cavlary destroyed that should have been a clear victory to carthage, these lot are shit

  • i do not know how u can possibly lose once their cav is dead sprint you cavalry to each flank and wait for the infintary fight to start then smash their flanks. get you reserves and reinforce the center battle line keep hannibal close to inspire troops lmao not hard ! :-)

  • i can see these people playing online vs some kid in a basement

  • hahahaha i can imagine that XD

  • @SupaTROopa2

    hehe yes :)

  • Numidian cavalry killing 2 units of roman equites?

  • hmmmmm

  • yea. equites hecka suck

  • haha, I know right? but this ish based on real historical stuff, not Total War unit balancing

  • I wonder what kinda mod they used for this game. The maps and units seems larger.

  • u can change the unit scale, to huge in the game options i belive

  • They made their own mod. It's not released for everyone. Just them.

  • i dont think its fair that they had people controlling the carthigianians but had no one playing as rome its not a challenge to defeat a computer

  • It's an edited version of the game, and most likely they've pumped the AI full of historical tactics and so on.

  • You are wrong they got people playing for the other side.

  • keep in mind that the man who really was commanding the romans was barley as intelligent as the ai...

  • What are you talking about. This is just showing what happened in the real war. The real war was like this. And what do you mean computer? They planned out what this "computer" was going to do anyway.

  • I must say, rome total war is an awsome game, I have it now 4 years and it ceeps amusing me.

There are greate mods of this game, this programe has 1 of the best mods there are.

  • what mod would that be.

tbh SPQR mod is the awsomesauce as mods go :)

  • I mean the mod they made 4 this game on TV.

  • i know that :P

    but is it publicly available?

  • I didn't found it, so I don't think so.

    maybe we can ask BBC?

  • it would probably be more efficient to ask lion TV as the BBC just airedthe show lion TV produced it.

id also be suprised if we got an answer :D

  • also why do they say this is the battle of cannae? the players didnt use any of the tactics used in the battle of cannae so its just a regular battle against the computer..its not the battle of cannae at all.

  • Because the troops and the terrain is based on the Battle of Cannae

  • i used to love this show when I first saw it a few years ago on BBC, now Ive actually played the game and watched some documentaries based on these battles..and realise that everyone on this show (including the experts) have no idea what theyre talking about..and watching it is quite cringe-worthy

  • those guys are idiots, how does cavalry with a few javelins, a small knife and a shield beat roman cavalry that has some armour, a long spear and a shield?

with a spear you can more easily kill cavalry than you can with a small knife... pure bullshit

  • well they keep going on about how long those Javalin guys have been service so they may of had a very high vetren status.

  • "high vetren status" pfffff , they look like a bunch of no lifers , what kind of idiot tries to prove a point in history through a game??

  • Split them in half??? Have they no common sense at all? It's simple maths, if you surround them, more of your men are fighting than theirs!

  • Erf, some terrible mistakes here :(

Yep it's not their job o do war but still...

  • it would have been great to have two teams, completely great

  • i had to stifle a laugh when the narrator said 'their existing intelligence'!

  • Well it is not AI, it is player they are vsing, someone who knows how the units should act for historic accuracy, seeing as they do some moves which AI doesent. But I know what you are saying

  • I agree

  • i always wished they had 2 teams one team playing each side cos them u have 2 teams of non experts and they both might make similar msstakes

  • Well in this battle that might be a little unfair.

  • Yeah. Both are noobs, but one got a bigger army.

  • To be fair to the players in this instance the Roman 'steamroller/freight train' tactic is one i utilize fairly regularly on RTW and it works 9/10. Hannibal was a military genuis and this Carthagenian army probably would have got smashed if he hadn't been in charge

Cannae is obviously a much much harder battle than the majority given to these clowns. If you consider the folks who did spartacus vs crassus did everything wrong and still won. They would have been eaten alive on this one...

  • jeez the yshould at least use medieval 2 total war engine and use some rome total war mod

  • medieval 2 hadnt been released yet medieval was released in 2006

  • No. Medieval 2 was released in 2006.

  • I'd like to see some competition. These people don't even seem to know the difference between light and heavy cavalry or their tactical uses.

  • THey always lose their scouts x.x

  • yea and its so stupid 'cause scouts should return to their army to report,I doubt they shouted all the way to their army before being butchered xD

  • i can just imagine...

scouts:HEY THEY HAVE SOME JAVELIN THROWERS ON THE RIGHT!!!

army soldier 1: what did they say?

army soldier 2 apparently they have babbling brokers on the right!

army soldier 1:i hate brokers! lets get em

  • no wonder they always win. there units are like invulnerable against the AI. 1 Light cavalry took on 3 squadrons of equites??

  • there are other players playing the AI

  • the pro guy with the mop hair is such a twat

  • If they ever make another series of this they should get some people who know what they're doing to play...these people are friggin hopeless.

  • Wait wtf were they just charging with pikes?

  • The units and skins are modded to be realistic like if they wanted the germans to massacre the romans they would change there attack or else rome would cream em.

  • I've always wanted to know - are the opponents to the team (in this case the romans) controlled by another human or humans, or are they AI?

  • Humans i would say, nobody is 100% sure. But most say Humans. :)

  • @evilpuspin yes, i agree, the AI in this game (rome total war) even if they modified it wouldn't be as smart as this

  • @Benjamin241

id say humans because they need to recreate the historical action, not the AI's constant frontal attacks and retreats before attacking

  • 216 B.C.

    Is that right??

  • Yeah. Easy way to remember it is that Hannibal's big three battles happened one year after the other. Trebia was in 218 BC, Trasimene was in 217 BC and Cannae was in 216 BC
