I can not remember exactly what level this is but one requirement to go higher is to spit on the cross. If you refuse to, then you get a pat on the back and an "at a boy" for not doing so, then you will find that you are not allowed to continue upward in the orginization for some reason or another.

The upside down cross is not necessarily a sinister symbol. The pope is St. Peter's successor and St. Peter was crucified upside down. Byzantine iconography uses an upside down cross to symbolize St. Peter even as it uses a St. Andrews cross to symbolize St. Andrew.

Do you or did you ever belong to a college fraternity? May of them have "secrets" from hand shakes to passwords, etc. You don't see anyone getting all upset over their "secrets". If you're not a member, you can't attend their meetings. Freemasonry is no different.

In fact, just about everything "secret" about the fraternity has been made public and published in books and on the Internet. If Freemasonry was a secret organization, none of this would be made available. We wouldn't meet in well marked buildings and publish our building addresses in the phone book. Real secret societies or organizations don't do any of this.
