Maybe you could write a letter to Essence with a portfolio showcasing the beauty of medium to dark complected women (how would you assess your complexion on a scale of 1 to 10 with ten being the lightest?) As most of their models are fair complected, it may be a niche to promote your unique beauty and raise awareness. Maybe try and contact BET about a position?

I can assume those attributes pale in comparison to all the skills, connections and luck, required to make it in your choosen profession. It's such a dog eat dog game, not to mention the limited role for black woman.
