  • Just found out on Nov 26 2011 that my 6 yr old daughter is type 1. We are just now getting it under control. Cant wait for her to be able to go to the pump! She plays basketball and I get so nervous every time she plays. She doesn't. Lol. Which I am glad she plays b/c it's great for her! I still have to wake up @3am every night b/c I almost always have to give her a snack or juice b/c she will b low in the morning.

  • @haleymadimckenzie I agree with you. Yeah type 1 sucks at first but you learn to live with it. I now look at type 1 diabetes as a benefit. I've met some of my best friends at diabetics camp. Don't let diabetes control your life.

  • @xXJackster82Xx touche my friend this vid just shows all the wrong stuff

  • A Cozmo! I miss my Cozmo pump :(

  • this kids a fucking idiot because he lets it controll him i have diabetes (type 1) and i am perfect at taking care of myself he makes his own issues and his parent are negative about it he lets it controll him and i dont

  • @mermaidofsuburbia he can eat whatever he wants u ain't no diabetes expert

  • @JDRFsupporter Agreed thank god, ive had it since i was five, some people can just be idiots........or there still stuck in the past of old diabetes care.

  • I can't believe the crap they're feeding that kid. Every second over 140 is doing major damage to your body, I don't care how much insulin will cover his food, he shouldn't be eating all that cereal and milk.

  • @mermaidofsuburbia uh yeah he can its not about what he eats its about the carbs he eats and how much insolin he takes to cover the carbs he eats one unit of insolin is about 20 carbs so when you eat a 100 carb meal you need 5 units insolin he can eat whatever he wants and he will be fine as long a he takes the right amount

  • Did the father seriously say that 194 was better than a 70? Oh my god.

  • @mermaidofsuburbia 194 isn't that bad for a young type 1 diabetic. At that age you're looking for around 150.

  • i got it1989.. have been living with it for a while now.. things only get better if you put in the work...WORK .as in..EAT HEALTHY FOODS.. AND WORK OUT..try & Stay fit. and check your blood sugar often.10 times a day.

in my early years i was horrible with my numbers.. i did not care..rarely checked my blood sugar.. drank.. and ate when hungry.but one day..years later you will realize..you cant do that anymore.and you will pay a price.

chin up ..its a Challenge. Go DC-United & Fulham fc

  • Thank god they have found the cure for this they plan to release it in about 3 or 4 years

  • I'm type 1 diabetic and I'm 21 years old I got it 3 years ago and I'm still trying to cope!

wish I was this brave.. there are moments where I hate myself and I get really depressed :(

  • You are very brave.. Bless you Calvin.. :)

  • I have T1 as well through 6 Endocrinologists in nearly 12 years the final confirmed. It's a constant battle, because though I'm heavy set, I'm still T1. I was diagnosed with a blood sugar of 984 and the pump is a wonderful thing to have! I completely agree. It's the best thing to help control Diabetes. It's one of the things that continued to me go on. I remember taking 8 - 15 shots a day.

  • I am 25 and I am starting to come to the realization that I may have had type 1 diabetes my entire life. I've had all of the symptoms, as well as several (though mild, but enough to give me problems) issues with my health. Things SEEM to be improving, though I take no insulin, so I think there's a chance that some might develop an immunity, although it takes time, depending on the individual. This disease is a plague and I hope they find a cure as soon as possible. It stole many years of my life

  • my boyfriend has type 1 diabetes, and i wish i couldd get rid of it in the world its so sad & sometimes he gets upset and pissed off and i do too. i love him & can you die?

  • @talkinganimals11 i have type one diabetes, ive had it since i was five. As long as you take care of your self you'll be fine. dont worry.

  • this is exactly how i was, diagnosed at 7 , am now 19.Diabetes is tough as hell on a kid, even though i always had good control and tried to live as normal as a life as possible, its still always there. It gets really rough sometimes, and theres not much we can do but learn to deal.People will say they understand but they will never really know. But like all obstacles in life, we must overcome them and grow. So for all you young diabetics who are struggling, stay strong, it gets easier over time

  • i am a type 1 diabetic and have a pump but i dont like it allways make my sugar like around 340-550. ON november 4 i was donosed now im using the needles and my sugar is 60-250.i hate it.and while i was in the hosipital i did my 2 shot on my stomach and my mom did my first incase anything happened it hard every day i use 14 units of lantis i hope u do allright !

  • @zombiekill1990

I remember the day I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as well... Right when I was on insulin , I've seen dull colorful floaters , a body high , drowsiness, light sensitivity, and dizzyness. Do you have any of these symptoms from the insulin? The insulin has side effects but I can't find anyone who has the same effects as me.

  • Calvin is a smart kid. He has taken charge of his diabetes. I have lived with it for 30 years now. It inspires me to watch his story. He and his dad make a good team in dealing with blood sugars. Keep up the good work.

  • They will never come up with the cure. They get too much money from us just by selling insulin. :) motherfuckers

  • @Skatila1234 "They get too much money from us just by selling insulin. :) motherfuckers"

Please don't feel this way.I know there are some people who like to bash the pharmaceutical companies because they make alot of money. They say the cure for cancer also won't be found. This is bull shit. There is a tremendous amount of research being done all over the world. There is money to be made from the cure also. They are VERY close! Stay healthy and be ready when the cure becomes available! Good luck.

  • Fantastic Video Channels. You Have one of the Best Video Collections in Youtube. Great work!.

  • thanks for the diabetes uploads - I love your taste

  • calvin im 17 i have type 1 diabetes tests say i could have had it for 10 years almoste my hole life i found out 2 months ago and you know what i did? i took charge with diate and exercise i was controlling it with metformen and naw im off metformen and i keep it in good range with diat and exercise plz ppl you dont need insilin to stay alive plz just try it i know my numbers are staying in the 80's to 90's evin after a meal call me a lier if you wont but its true

  • @MrBubthegrub wtf are you in the honeymoon period

  • loved the ending, where he mentions each individual factor that needs demands your attention to control your blood glucose. It gets easier with practice no doubt, but control never becomes consistently perfect.

  • I'm a soccer player with diabetes too. I was just diagnosed. I didn't know you could get false readings if your hands were dirty. Thanks!

  • HOW AMERICA ADVANCE WHY IT NOT MAKING perment cure for diabetes or make pills

  • @1Drummernick * With no sweets.'

  • Every day I live with type 1 diabetes is another day I want to die :D Oh btw, I believe I got diabetes from a pizza (It was Delicio) I ate when I was 11. I got extremely ill, but only for a 24 hr period. Then a few months later of deteriorating condition, I was diagnosed with diabetes. Coincidence? I think not! I'm now almost 18. I am not on the pump and I struggle every day. But I think I have better control then this kid ;D Message me if about how you guys got diagnosed with diabetes!

  • @KILLE911 Just to mention I doubt pizza gave you diabetes, probably coincidance as if you have type one mine is a rare type (type A) and is souly genetic (what the doctor said( DR Quinn for anyone in the uk that may know/heard of him)) so probs not the pizza there mate

  • @Savafan313 Yeah I know that but I guess I'm just looking for 110% assurance but that's not possible :/

    Thanks.... For once.

  • Guys please don't laugh or take the piss here.

I've had diabetes since I've been 11, and I'm now a mid teenager.

Recently I've been reading up on things, retinopathy being one.

I'm really worried about going blind and not being able to see ( I want to be a musician )

I'm trying but it kinda brings me to tears sometimes just thinking " oh no I'm gonna end up blind, not being able to see my kids, my wife and the world "

    Any advice?

    Thanks :)

  • @1DrummerNick OMG read my comment that I posted on this video today. I think that I can give you some of my tips, and you can give me some of yours. I also am a musician and I am afraid of going blind, or even worse kidney failure. I have had diabetes for 6.25yrs and have never had a severe high or low. But I have had many troubles with insulin lately. I use Humalog and Humilin N. It's the humalog that is giving me grief. Please message me if you would like to learn more this!

  • @KILLE911 Hey man,if you have good control and eat right then you are reducing the risk greatly, I have went about 10 days with no seers and aim to keep that up.

I'm Scottish so I'm on a different insulin from you probably:), since I commented I have started to realise it's not all bad if I take care.

    What instrument do you play?

    Take care man :)

    Nick.

  • Wow, I love the conversation this video sparks. Calvin is still very healthy, still very smart and still tends to make poor food choices, despite the best efforts of his parents. :o)

He still pumps, albeit with a MiniMed now.

He's healthy, gets straight-A's with four AP classes as a Soph in HS and his A1c's have been in the 6.8-7.3 range, which is good for his age (15 now). All-in-all, life is good and the Type 1 isn't winning.

Marching band & rugby have replaced soccer as activities.

  • Thank you for making this video. My daughter was diagnosed last year at the age of 9. I never knew why she was sick. I did not know the symptoms of Diabetes. She gets picked on alot at school because of what she has. Which is so cruel.

  • I do know him. I went to camp with him. :)))

  • ive had type one for 3 years now and they said maybe i could get the pump but that was as i said 3 years ago it sucks

  • Im 14 and been a type 1 diabetic for about 2 years. In theory diabetes is so easy, you take your monitor and test all the time. In reality it cant happen. I dont have time to take my monitor into a climbing hall or a basketball court and just test. Its not that easy. But i guess it may be hard but its never impossible :D x

  • The key thing we need to teach everyone cookingupastory is to stay hydrated and slightly alkalined. The Body only needs minerals, essential fatty acids, and enzymes to function properly. Well that and of course plenty of water and to eat healthy. I think your video is great and we want to help as many people as we can. We are having 100% success rate with diabetes. Let me know if you would like to know more about this miracle satchet of ours that you simply add to your bottled water.

  • i have type 1 diabetes and it is hard and annoying and the thing that makes it even more annoying is that they dont know what causes it so i haven't done anything wrong so i fell like why me but after watching this i feel lucky that my bgl reads only about 5 above average and inject just a few units before meals and about 13 before bed... poor kid!

  • I really liked your video. I am also Type 1. Best wishes with this condition...!!!

  • great video. this is also like me because i play competitive football and i manage my diabetes with it too.

  • *diabetics It needs ot be approved first I imagine.

  • I attached a vid that all diabbetics can relate to :p

  • I KNOW YOU

  • I've had diabetes for 15 years- I'm nearly 16 :/ I wouldn't want it to happen to anyone...

  • I try to motivate other diabetics who may be depressed about the condition, and hopefully pump people up, and make them become proactive about the condition, and make them feel positive about it.

Make sure this condition regrets the day it hitched a ride on U. Play it's game. Umay lose some of the battles, but U make sure U win the war.

    - Signed Jason [Father of a Type 1 diabetic. Son of a Type 1. Grandson of a Type 1, and a Type 1 himself.] Keep fighting the good fight Calvin!

  • @HaligonianType1 Just reading your simple message has helped me so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • I have type 1 1/2 diabetes nd in only 14 i got it in late summer of 09 it sux i hate it when people make fun of me i hope their is a cure soon so no 1 will hav to suffer anymore

  • @OCrush3355 There is a way of reversing the affects of diabetes and cureing it. You will not hear about it from your Doctor or endocrinolagist because they only know what the've been tought by the pharmaceutical companies, who are only interrested in ongoing money making. Im happy to help you with alternative approaches if you like and I do it for free.

  • @1moreon LOL, Yeah I have heard about that thhey put cells in your pancrease and you will be needing no insulin or very litle amounts for a about 2-4 years.

  • @iceland3211 LOL I'm not talking about anything proposed by western medicine and its endless fraud and false hope. I think its about time you opened your mind and stop puppeting clap trap there been dribbling for years.

  • How did i get type 1 im only 12? and i got it 2months ago :( hopefuly a cure soon

  • @xxsnipehshotxx contact me and I'll tell you exactly how you got it and how to get rid of it and why you can't trust the industry.

  • @1moreon You cant get rid of type one diabetes. you stupid fraud!!!

  • Dr. Brian Clement says that he cures diabetes in their Hypocrates institute, I wish I was in the USA to go check it out for someone who means alot to me. She has been diabetic from the day she was born.

  • My daughter will be 5 on April 09, 2010. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on June 23, 2008 at the age of 3. We in the PICU for 7 days and were within a couple of days of losing her. Her sugar at the time of dx was over 700.

  • Yeahh I Know What You Mean. Ive Only Had A Few Hypos In My Whole Life (Just Lucky I Guess) It Would Be A Nightmare aswell When Learning To Drive So A Pump Does Seem A Good Idea. With My Boxing, They Told Me I Could Never Turn Amature Because Of Diabetes And That Mentally Destroyed Me :/ It Can Leave Bad Scars Mentally Sometimes :/

  • I Was Thinking About Going On A Pump But I Play Rugby, Football And Box. So I Didnt Think It Would Be Worth Getting. But My Sisters Bin Diabetic For 21 Years And Shes Just Gone Onto A Pump And They Do Seem Really Really Good :)

  • Type 1. Im 16. And Had It For 5 Years. Ohh The Joys

  • Bro totally know what its like but what is the diference between th readings on the meters in america than in New zealand

  • I got type 1 not too long ago and I'm 15. its a pain in the butt, but not the end of the world and i don't have as much of a problem as Calvin seems to.

  • It really is a struggle! Thanks for this truthfull (out of experience) video about diabetes.

  • i have type 1 diabetes at 9-9-09..its pretty easy to remeber..and i was 9 and in feb 29 i will be ten

  • Aww... Bwood Sugar! =)

  • To add again. I want to make a correction. A "bolus" is administering a SMALL amount of fast acting insulin, not a large amount which Calvin stated in the video. Diabetics are living much longer these days, and even longer then those who are complacent with their health who don't have diabetes. Complications are a thing of the past if you are on top of your game. Remove poor glucose control, and you remove the main cause of complications.

  • Why doesn't he just get the injections that way he doesnt have to carry that thing around O_O.

  • @KawaiyoKoji because some people dont like to be poked with needles 3 times a day

  • I drink alot too. I will drink 3 cups of water, and then 5 minutes later be thirst again. I had 3 cokes and a diet coke last night in the same 30 minutes.

  • also my tounge has this white coating over it

  • Comment removed

  • I am 13 years old and lately i have been showing symptoms of type 1 diabetes.

    I am always thirsty

    I am always hungry

I have to go to the bathroom alot,

My skin is really dry in places.

My grandmother has type 1 and my mom just has hypo by itself. The doctor gave me a meter just to do a home test and my blood sugar always stayed between 140-160. We have tp give the meter back...so. Sometimes i feel really shaky and weak. I am getting tested soon. Does anyone have any idea what this is?

  • Could sound like Type 1, but lets hope its not. My symptoms was peeing at least every two hours, drinking 5 - 6 litres of liquid every day and my vision was rapidly getting worse.

  • I have all of those symptoms, but maybe not the lastt oneee.

  • Hey Calvin-

Good job and nice explanation. I have a minimed paradigm 722 pump and I am fourteen years old. Good luck, brother.

  • I am 12 years old, and i have had diabetes for 6 years now. my A1C's are really bad. every day is a battle

  • I'm twelve years old as well. I've only had diabetes for about a year and a half but am still trying to find my niche in my new school. I'm on a insulin pump at the moment, and A1C's are fine (yay) but it's so annoying when you're changing for gym and people are just like "what's that? what's that?". very annoying.

  • we have a lot in common

  • You guys should see Calvin now! He's so much bigger now, 14 and healthy as a horse. Last A1c was 7.6, better than the 7.9 three months ago. He eats a little better now, but as a teen, it's hard to get him to test as often as he should. We tried the CGM (Continuous Glocuse Monitor) but it just doesn't work well for us.

He's not doing soccer any more :o(, but he's doing High School marching band, along with a local wind ensemble, and loving it. Good grades, good kid, and still healthy. :o)

  • My twin has diabetes and my dad says almost the exact same things his dad says.. Oh and when my twin is HI on the meter, he tests again.

  • You cant eat like that. He basically ate a bunch of garbage(sugar and proccessed flour) for breakfast and dad wonders why he has problems all day. This is a shame to watch.

  • The thing is though that he knew he was going to be playing sport, so he had to have a high sugar/carb meal to give him the energy. Im type 1 diabetic & being a diabetic doesnt mean that u cant eat any sugar or carbs, it just means you need to counter weight the amount of insulin you shoot up to match the amount of sugar youre eating, based against the activity your planning to do. Its tricky, but @ the end of the day its just like a normal person, only as the kid said, u have to do it manually.

  • It's kind of fun to watch this debate rage. We know we made mistakes-that's why this is an interesting video! :o)

I often wish he hadn't gone "hi" that day. It was a first (and last!) for us. The combination of having a film crew in our house all morning, and this being the second game of the morning for me (out of three), made for a situation where I was not 100% aware of what he'd eaten and bolused for.

The pump was still a little new for us too, and I was afraid he had a bent

  • Wow, what's your problem? We can eat everything and also due to the fact that he is GROWING it could be horrible on his blood sugar. Plus, wasn't he being active? God, idiot....

  • @Faullible I agree with you. It may as well been a bowl of sugar. The milk and the cereal. That is a diabetic nightmare, and is probably the worst breakfast for any diabetic. Maybe further dietary education is needed.

  • I'm curious tho. How long was it after he ate when he tested? Should be at least 2hrs after eating to see what your preprandial numbers will be. You shouldn't correct with a bolus unless you are high after this stage, not before, else you risk going low. Also, a bolus is administering a SMALL amount of fast acting insulin, not a large amount. I hope he wasn't testing shortly after breakfast, and waited at least 2 hours. Great vid. Type 1 requires alot of patience and calculations.

  • I am surprised Calvin eats cold cereal. That spikes most diabetics big time, and the milk with it. I eat whatever I want as well tho. Hah... Rapid and designer insulins give you amazing flexibility tho. Someone using insulin, and counting carbs, can eat what anyone else can, you just have to be careful like anyone else. With weight gain, etc. We become our own pancreas, doing calculations, estimating, etc. Always changing.

  • cecilia he is not in the honey moon stage if he is on the pump and yes hey discontinued the cozmo

  • the same one

  • poor kid....

  • i had diabetes type 1 for 6 years and i am 11 now i got that pump so i dont have 2 take ingections

  • I'm glad he compared it to cancer and AIDS. People think I'm crazy when I do that. But it's true. Every day is a struggle for survival.

  • same

  • This video should be shown in elementary and junio high schools to educate those who know little about the disease. It's a great vid, and I find myself coming back at least once a week.

  • @HadesOnEarth my middle school was horrible at that. they made it sound like type 1 diabetics got it because it was their cause. (because of not eating healthily etc etc.) but it's like, c'mon. a few extra words would sum it up perfectly.

    props to this kid, calvin

  • Lego, When you use your lancet, are you pricking the side of the tip of your finger, or the pad? Use the side, there are much less nerves there, so less pain. You probably already use your sides anyway, eh?

  • i have diabetes to :b!

  • my brother has diabetes

  • Oops, meant "not" a large amount. Weird typo.

  • I love this vid. I watch it all the time. Hah... There are a few terms used that are used incorrectly, like "bolus", which is actually administering a small amount of fast acting insulin a large amount, as stated in the vid. I am just picky. Great vid, everyone should watch.

  • is there any possibility that my friend is now having diabetes if he acquired skin disease which has almost the same appearance as athlete's foot between the fingers on his foot.?

  • Gibson, Skin issues, such as rashes, MIGHT be an indication of diabetes. Anyone who notices anything at all out of the oridinary with their bodies, should always get it checked out. It's the safe thing to do, and if something is wrong, it's gonna be there whether you find out for sure or not, and would just progress if it was something like diabetes.

  • I use to think it was cool but now im pissed off since i have to keep it up and feel like i am gaining weight.

  • Rankin, which type are you? I am assuming Type 1. I tend to feed my insulin. You have to be careful of that else you can gain weight.

  • Rankin, Check out the link in my profile. Seriously. You will learn so much there, and from the real pros, diabetics themselves. I am telling you, you will learn more in six months then a doctor who isn't a specialist could show you in ten years. In fact, doctors are clueless about diabetic care, and you will find eventually you only use them for scrips. I am "Delphinus" there. Look me up, mention my name and you get a good seat. :p

  • Its been two and a half weeks since i have taken my medicine. I am always at 65 and this past week have not gotten over 85 when i eat bad food. If i didnt than i would go low. Sooner or later i get low .I went to the doctor and diabetes center and they told me not to take any insulin and keep my sugar up. They said obviousley i am producing some form of insulin and maybe my pancreas is honey mooning and working overtime.I have another appointment this week but its still the same thing.

  • There is a handy rule many diabetics may not use. If you are low, use the 15/15 rule. Treat with 15 carbs, wait 15 mins, test. Repeat if necessary.

  • No dude i wasnt kidding. I have not taken my medicine in easiliy two weeks and do not get over 85 when i eat horrible. If i ate the way i am suppose to i will get low so i eat alot of sweets, oranges, and apples to keep my sugar up.

  • Rankin, You may be "honeymooning" then. That means your pancreas may still be producing some insulin.

  • Do you mind if I send you a URL to a great forum for diabetics? It's on my profile actually. Just a great community for Type 1, 2, 1.5, LADA and pre-diabetics, and people in general, and family of diabetics. Check it out... Great people. I wouldn't suggest it if it wasn't such a great tool for myself. My nick is Delphinus there, if you would like to look me up, if you decide to check it out. Take care DG...

  • Yes... You seemed to have some flawed facts about insulin use tho.

  • Exactly! Injecting isn't an exact science and people who use insulin frequently go low. Sometimes you over correct, etc. It happens. Do you have Type 1? If so, you would understand.

  • If you are producing insulin, like if you are Type 2, you would just use less insulin if you were using it. Everyone knows you can go low where insulin is involved, but your pancreas doesn't have to also be producing it to have lows.

  • That is so literally wrong. Are you serious? Your body doesn't need to be producing insulin, to go low. The insulin you inject would create lows, and that is typically what causes all lows, insulin you inject. You were kidding tho, right?

  • 32 isint that much it depends on age activity etc i used to be on 32 when i was between 18 and 20

  • Not trying to be rude but are you serious or trying to make a joke. I have had it for almost three months but like i said i set up a appointment to see doc since i went to the diabetes center and they told me to stop since i was always at 60 with insulin. If i am on the honeymoon period or anybody might have suggestions please let me know because i have not taken medicine in a week and have still been low with bad foods. Like i said i dont mean to sound mean or anything but i will look it up

  • Supposedly right now i am but normally i would take that much insulin and now i havent in a week. I have not taken any insulin in a week since i would get down to 60 and feel bad. Now i have ate horrible and still wont get over 110. I scheduled a appointment but that is still some time from now. I am type 1 diabetic so what do yall think?

  • I am type 1 diabetic. I havent took any insulin since this past monday. Normally since i am still getting use to everything the doctors had me on 7 units 3x a day of humalog and 32 units at night on lantus. But they think that i am on the honeymoon period since i havent took any insulin in a week and have am always low now. At first i struggled getting use to what i need to eat. First week after the hospital i was always 150-250 now no more than 90 . what do yall think?

  • i take lantus and novo rapid every day i can take more than 30 units some days a day and 21 units on lantus a night every night.....

im 16 and ive had it for 12 years :|

i hope to god that one day there is a cure for me and others who suffer with diabetes....

  • I have only had diabetes for three months. When i first got out of the hospital it seemed that i coudnt get it down to 120 and keep it that way. I am suppose to inject myself with 7 units before each meal so three times a day and one time with 32 units of lantus at night. I have not taken any insulin this week since the doctor has told me not to. The last time i took a shot was monday and today is saturady morning. They think i am in the honey moon period right now.

  • When i took my insulin i would get down to the low 60's and would feel horrible. I told the doctors and i have been eating bad to see if my glucose levels go up but they really dont for some odd reason. I set up a appointment with the endocronologist but i need answers now. I struggled in the beginning but not now. Why? Its also not my machine either since i tested at the doc's office. I have ate candy, pizza, cereal with sugar and i still dont go above 110. Can anybody help me out?

  • I dont understand why till the time this past monday i have struggled with my glucose levels and now no more. I mean i woke up friday morning at 89. Doctors told me not to take any medicine just monitor constantly to make sure i dont get too low or too high. Has anything like this happend to anybody here?

  • wow i took 41 untis of lantus

  • Do you not take humalog?

  • Dude dont really know. Like i said i take 21 units of humalog everyday and at night 32 units of lantus. But i have gone days without taking medication and my glucose levels still are lower than 140. Do you not take humalog?

  • I had problems with what i was going to do with my extra insulin. I take shots 4 times a day and 7 units of humulog before each meal than lantus of 32 units at night. Is this two much or just fine?

  • what age are you? x

  • I am 21 years old but still seeing how much insulin i need.

  • The amount of insuling you're taking seems absolutely fine and it depends on your height and weight too. x

  • Im 5'4 180 so overwieght you could say but i am stocky since i lifted weights when i was younger. How much do you take?

  • I am 14 and take 19 lantus, I was wondering if that was too much as well...

  • I am diabetic type 1 and if anyone wants to talk because they're finding it hard or if you have any questions I'll be happy to help :) x

  • Question: I've been wondering this for a long time. Is Hypoglucoma (low-sugar) a form of diabetes?

  • omg $7000 for a pump. I get all my stuff for free because of the NHS in Britian.

  • Girlique, Great story. Diabetes control has come along way from the days when doctors all agreed you couldn't maintain good control. Now with the intro of designer faster acting insulins, and more precise testing, this archaic mindset needs to be throw into the bin.

  • Would somebody please help me. I just got type 1 diabetes at the beginning of june this year so 06/2009 and am still getting use to everything. I am on lantus and humalog. I have one extra vail of each both unopened and was wondering if they would be safe being kept at room temperature or do i have to stick it in the fridge. If so do is stick the current ones as well and how long do i wait before i inject myself after i take them out. I just thought of this but havent had time to ask doc.

  • i'm on the same insulin as you and keep the ones you havent used yet inthe fridge and the ones that you do use can be at room tempurature if theyre pens if theyre just viles then keep them refridgerated (: hope this helps

  • I remember when i was about 9-10 years old,i took overdose. That day was my second worst day ever.Luckily i didnt faint.I was 6 years when i got it,and now im 13.Good luck to all who have diabetes! :)

  • Life with Type 1 now is so manageable! It takes a lot of planning, but it certainly should never slow anyone down. There are gold medal winners, NFL quarterbacks and NBA players with Type1, and now, soon (hopefully) a Supreme Court Judge! How cool is that! What a great role model.

  • God bless you my brother!!!

  • i was 4 years old when i got type 1 diabetes.

15 now, so 11 years. diabetes is a pain in the ass but thanks to my wonderful doctor(s) i can manage it and actually live a real, awesome life. of course i have to check and inject every time i eat, but the crap with "you can never eat candy or ice cream or any kind of sweets anymore" is pretty much gone now. i can go to the store and buy an ice cream if i want thanks to the wonderful new treatments and awesome and understanding doctors

  • i have had diabetes since may 2009 and im 11 years old. i cant get the pump because i have to leave the honeymoon stage and i had been peeing every half hour, i lost 6 pounds in a month, and i was always always so shaky, yup, i went three months without a drop of insulin and my grades went downhill but its ok because i didnt do it my diabetes did , ):

  • jhs

  • It got to a point with me where I was peeing once every 55 mins. Yep, and that was 24/7. A full pee. And having a daughter with type 1, I should have known better. Well, I did know. I was 100percent positive I was diabetic, but fear I guess, and being stubborn prevented me from going to a doc sooner. My girlfriend probably saved my life. I went ten months without a drop of insulin. Docs were amazed. That is pretty much impossible.

  • don't give soldier!

  • what's that song at the end? the one that starts at 5:09

  • I forgot to mention my daughter is now 13. Most other kids I know, still get their parents to manage their MDI. You must be a proud dad. Well, you obviously are. Peace...

  • PS, I don't mean to nitpick, but I like the video and find myself watching it and sending it to other diabetics, and enwly diagnosed so they can see it is manageable... I sent to my daughter as well. She has been doing her own bloodwork and MDI since she was six. Took a few minutes and a stay in the hospital for a few hours, but she has never needed help since unless she is overly tired, or lazy. Hah... More then most teens do even with Type 1.

  • I want to add, a "bolus" isn't administering a large amount of insulin like stated in the vid, it actually refers to the process of administering a SMALL amount of FAST acting insulin to cover meals, snacks, make corrections, etc. Your "basal" injections, etc, refer to the L
