The redsox, cubs and countless other teams don't have to say what if? You know why? Because through good and bad times they support their team. The strike didn't he;p but the bottom line is the fans should have come to supports the expos no matter what!!!
I could have seen the Yankees and the Expos meeting each other in the '94 World Series. Hell, I'd go as far as saying the Expos would have had the dynasty that the Yankees had in the late '90s. It really is sad that it came to the strike ultimately deciding the fate of the Expos ten years later.
I think it was the strike that killed the Expos more than not winning a World Series. Had the strike never happened it wouldn't have killed interest in Montreal & many of the top players wouldn't have left. The strike ripped the Expos heart out & as a result they felt the effects on the field & slowly the fan base left. Plus nobody would give the Expos a new stadium either cause of uptight bureaucrats running the city.
I think the Cleveland Indians would've beat the Expos in the World Series had there been no strike that year. Not that Cleveland was much better, (arguably though) they just have worse luck. I'm a Tigers fan, so there is no bias.
the strike of 1994 affected all the baseball teams though we all move on past it and not say "ho we should've would've could've won the world series"i mean big deal the pirates felt they should've won back then didn't they could've won in '92 and '93 didn't yet the expos was a LOW market team and now there's the washington nationals root them on
Would Montreal have gone to the World Series in 1994? No, because they would've been upset by Atlanta in the NLCS because the Braves were much better!
@Jiltedin2007 you are soooo very wrong, what a bonehead reply! the expos were by far and away the best team that year in the nl in pitching, defense, coaching, team speed, and power.....wouldve been in the final series and maybe won, but bud seling and bad corrupt company made sure of that! what a disgustiing thing that strike was to destroy this awesome team and eventually a much better franchise...corrupt dealings by corrupt american business owners
@alisavank Oh yeah, you're so right. That's why Atlanta won the World Series the following year. Right? The Expos is like a Finishing School for Major League Baseball. The Expos could NEVER compete with the Big Boys when it comes down to "Money Time"! They always had some Good Young Talent, but when the time comes for that talent to develop and higher salaries are requested, that is time for the "Candidates of Finishing School" to graduate and to be put on job placement to someone else.
@Jiltedin2007 Greg Maddux even said the best teams he played on were the 94-96 teams. Dominant pitching and the starters would pitch into the 7th inning pretty much every time. They should have never traded Justice after that 96 series. But I think it was because they had more faith in Jermaine Dye coming up.
Had the Expos been able to keep the nucleus they had in the early and mid 90's together. Maybe they would've been able to convince Montreal to build them a real ballpark.
@halodystroyer44 And you know why the 2002 AFC champions Twins almost got contracted instead of the 56-106 Brewers? Exactly, because Bud Selig transferred the Brewers ownership to his daughter and tried to disappear their geographic rivals. Selig is a corrupt commisioner who did everything to move the Expos out, from lending his buddy Jeffrey Loria $38M to buy the Marlins after disgracing the Expos, to not letting the Expos callup minor leaguers in 2003 when they were in the Wild Card race
Expos would've been in the WS and probably won vs. Cleveland. But that much is still a question mark. What is indesputable is the strike really hurt that franchise. The next season, the team had to trade most of its stars or lose them to free agency, and the pain of seeing their team break up during a strike was what really hurt that fanbase. Without Loria and shotty ownership, Montreal would still have a team, and a damn good one probably.
sad very sad. business and sports suck, all the real heroes have disappeared. less teams, better baseball, the league is saturated with mediocre players and the good players all sign with the yanks. montreal had the best farm system in baseball, did things the old fashioned way, they earned their wins, not buy them!
The Nats are becoming quite a team now over in DC eve though its been a decent season but with the future of Strasburg and the signing of Harper they may be in business but then again Strasburg is gunna have to get Tommy John and Harper has a bit of an attitude problem so its a pretty shadowy future.
Well to answer the description "Why was the 95 team dispanded?" that is because the Expos lost close to 20 million dollars in revenue due to the strike. Since there was no World Series the Expos lost a lot of money. I heard even if the Expos didn't even make the postseason they were still guarenteed money for revenue. The 94 Expos had a 18 million dollar team and since they lost close to 20, they had to give their players away...Unfortunite because they got shit in return.
The Astros were having a great season in 94 also. Bagwell was hailed by many as the strike shortened MVP that year. If the season had played out I think its very possible that the EXPOS and ASTROS would have met in the NL Championship series.
They wouldn't have made it through the summer in first with the Braves tracking them down. Those Braves were simply too experienced and in their prime to let the young Expos take the division. The Braves would have run them down, just like they did with the Giants in 93. Sorry Montreal, it was never going to happen for you.
plus it would have come down to the braves and Expos probably. We don't know what would have happened since there was still a lot of baseball to catch up with.
why do you think that. the expos had one of the best records in the National League from the late 70's to the mid 90's.from 78-81 they were very legitimate contenders. In the late 80's early 90';s they consistently were in the hunt of the NL East title. This was before the wild card. At the end of most season they'd finish 2 games in back of the "big money teams" like the Phillies, Pirates, or Braves.Even the 03 team which was held back by MLB was in the wildcard race till the end
@donovanjd3 Oh wow, I completely forgot about that comment, but I'm glad you brought that up. My opinions on the Expos/Nationals have changed since then, and I believe that they are actually becoming a legitimate contender again. I do, however, believe the MLB could do without a few certain other teams.
The redsox, cubs and countless other teams don't have to say what if? You know why? Because through good and bad times they support their team. The strike didn't he;p but the bottom line is the fans should have come to supports the expos no matter what!!!

If the strike never happened, two things could have happened:
1. Don Mattingly could have retired with a ring.
2. The Expos could have been taken seriously and would still be around today.
And an all-Canadian World Series probably wouldn't have happened that year. The Jays were lagging behind three or four other teams for the Wild Card.
