You should definitely read The Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith I haven't read Twilight, but I saw the movie and I kept thinking that The Vampire Diaries was way better. I think they were written well. Maybe you could look at it and say there are several thinks technically incorrect in there, as far as what a writing course would teach you, but the whole point of a good book is to get pulled in and enjoy it. If an author accomplishes that then I'd say the books were written well. And in my case I got very pulled into those books. I loved every page. I didn't think I would. I sort of just took a chance and it turned out they are now some of my favorites.
