I used to be where you are, until the insurance giants started hosing me. A public option uses market pressures to force health insurance premiums in line with underwriting cost. I just moved to California, where we've got it, and my health insurance premium went down by 66%. And that's without shifting costs to someone else--no state subsidy. It works because it introduces real competition into health insurance. That's why insurance companies hate it.
