With the loss of Etta James recently we are running out of true soul greats, particularly female soul greats still alive and kicking. Aretha, Freda Payne, Ann Peebles Candi Statton, Mavis Staples and precious few others. Let's enjoy these greats terrific music artists while they still grace this world with their presence.
There are at least 6 songs in this top ten that are damn near immortal recordings. Do you think that they can come up with just one song nowadays to rival just one of these.
This is from June of '67, when "Respect" literally blew itself right off the charts. That was a triumph for Aretha Franklin, who had endured five years of recording "middle of the road"/"easy listening" material for Columbia, before signing with Atlantic.
I loved it when VH1 aired all American Bandstand's oldies. VH1 really stinks now. I haven't seen it since last year but like MTV it's a lot less music and a lot more bull@@@@!

These people dress much better than people of today. Much more classy and more style.

A great song but not that danceable. Hilarious to see all the preppy white kids in suits trying to dance to this song.

It's hillarous to see all those white kids dancing to the Queen of Soul's most recognized song, though.
