I had the awesome privilege of being directed by Hazo this weekend. My Wind Band played this song, by far my favorite of any I played. He brought a new life to the song, absolutely awesome. As a Bass Clarinet player I enjoyed this driving part of this song immensely. Can't wait to play it again!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lucky..... Haha it would be the best moment of my life if Samuel hazo conducted this piece for my ensemble. Very fun piece to play, haha one of my most favorite pieces I've ever played.
my wind ensemble had the opportunity to have samuel hazo conduct us during this song. he wanted our bass drum player to play louder so he told her to hit the drum like it's her ex boyfriend! he's the greatest!!!
Since last year I have been in love with Samuel Hazo's work ever since we played "our yesterdays lengthen like shadows" Eventually after a while of youtube surfing his songs, I fell in love with this one. It is absolutely amazing! For a year now, I have been waiting to play it, even though the percent would be pretty much 1. Well today I became a very happy clarinet player, and by the end of the day, i became a very happy Contra alto clarinet player. Bass inst. FTW Arabesque FTW Samuel Hazo FTW
listening to this song makes me want to put on a turban and attemp to sell people various spices in a bazzar. Sight read it, i bout died. Never besides in a solo have i seen a bassoon part so amazing
@Sephyrulz ? what are you talking about, i play this for class its not that fast, if you want fast look up czardas played by david childs or better yet flight of the bumblebee by david childs, at some points the camera can barley keep up with his fingers
@Juggernaut39735 lol every peice by hazo ive ever done i always play snare or bass or timpani..... soo much black...but in our honor band i decided to do mallets.....OMG is all i can say lol
I love everything about this piece but the ending...it kinda...doesn't fit with the awesomeness of the rest of it. But I'm happy we're playing this for Wind Ensemble...just wish there was a clarinet solo *humph*
I loved playing this peice at Meyerson Symphony Hall in Dallas Texas. Best Day of my Life!!! This song alone changed my life! I went from just "being" in band, to band "being" MY LIFE! I will forever attribute my love of music to this song! Search "Valley Center Arabesque" to see my bands performance of this as well as Lux Arumaque(spl) by Whitacre
At 4:56 the Bass Clarinet has a low three finger C, dropping down to the lowest E then up a minor 2nd to the lowest F. During last years Concert, I managed to play that part so powerfully, and powerful=/=loud mind you, that I, along with three people around me shook due to the low-note factor. It. Was. Awesome.
I had the honor of being in a honors band that was guest conducted by Mr. Hazo himself. Though the band I was in did not perform this song it still holds an immense power to it. I am very grateful that I was able to be under his direction.
Was I the only one who heard those runs at 2:29 to 2:34? Thats 5 seconds of runs, 48 notes. thats pretty much 10 notes in 1 second. And they say musicians don't have to work. Psh
Ok maybe I'm just dumb, but why did so many people like deathdude's comment about tuba's having the opening part. Is it a joke because it's a flute solo?
My high school played this my sophomore year. We jacked up the percussion to a ridiculous level. It was amazing. I'm now a senior, and everyone left from that year still has their part memorized.
Amazing piece! I love the flute solo in the beginning really brought out that middle eastern sound. I just love it! I hope my band plays this one day, I would enjoy the piccolo part haha
lol, i'm playing this in PMEA honors band (second chair trumpet btw :p), and guess who our guest conductor is...the brilliant composer himself. Be jealous....be very jealous :)
@lotrfan771 the oklahoma all state band is playing this is well! we got samuel hazo also.... i'm excited! how was the honor band? p.s.. I'm a trumpet player as well! ;)
@thAnonymousChristian it went well, played a song that may be the official recording and hasn't even been published yet. we were the second band to have ever played it :)
my band is playing this for our opening concert and all the little fifth graders will be there. i can't wait to see their faces when we throw this one on the floor :D
@TheSunderstorm Oboes and clarinets are not slashed together into one instrument. That's like saying a bassoon and bass clarinet are the same thing. :( Oboes have a VERY different sound.
