As long as people are campaigning for John's best album(s), my vote goes to two 80's gems "Bullets in the Hourglass" and "Punch the Big Guy." ......they include Strange Rivers, Runaway Train, Irresistible Targets, Botswana, and Ticket to the Stars among others. Give these two CD's a listen!
where was i when he this show took place? too busy being a teenager in the DC area... i wish i had been there, i got into his music by accident really, i was surfing a record shop two years ago, found California Bloodlines and i really liked the cover, bought it, then found out the next day that he died the day i bought it! every since then i have felt a very close connection to his music, it's hard to explain, but i've become a huge and am slowly catching up on his career
Based on everything I've read, this was a fine gentleman as well as an obviously superbly great musician. I envy those of you who knew him. And, I pray for all of you who mourn him. God bless. Thanks for posting. Dan
A good thing about being 61 is having seen John Stewart perform at the Palomino back in the 1970's. I just bought the CD of the Phoenix Concerts after being without the album for 20 years. Listening to his music today, I am so thankful that I first experienced it as a young man. John's music evokes many great memories of times and people long gone. Thank you John, thank you Buffy. And thank you for posting this video.
so sad to learn of john's death, been dealing with my own devils of late, bought a copy of "california bloodlines" in the early 70's after hearing "july your a woman", still my favourite to this day, fondest memory is him coming to britain in 1984(to escape the olympics) he said, very low key tour, my friends and i saw him at kingswinford west midlands in what can only be described as the local "scout hut" literaly, it was just john & an accompianing guitarist , we were & are so privaliged ! RIP
And when you rise and listen to the song again. Then you`ll know that the wings have come......." Whenever I se a shiny black raven flying over a Norwegian mountain. Sometimes so close I can hear the sound of the wings. Your song starts humming inside of me like the soft beating of an indian drum, like a heartbeat.
The Phoenix Concerts is the best live album I have ever heard (Harry Chapin's Greatest Stories is another great one). John Stewart has been my favorite singer and poet since I first heard Fire in the Wind album in 1976.
Agreed re: The Phoenix Concerts. Bought my first copy of the LP in 75, second in 80 or so, then the CD about 15 years ago. Arrangements of all the favorites are the best (Bloodlines, Cody, July...)
I'm just finding out about John's death today. I first saw him in Ohio in the 80's. The last time in Phoenix last year. I'm near tears. John sang and wrote from the depths of the universal heart and the grit of someone who has seen the darkness, and still shines a light. His music lives on...but tonight, in my heart, I feel a deep void. Thanks John.
You & Buffy look fabulous John! "Driving over Kanan... " as we all did for oh so many years. As ever, your music continues to be the soundtrack of my life. -- "And he's drivin' her stone blind!" I don't train a horse without blasting that song through the barn. The horses know it by heart John! What a thrill to have found you here. We're in Lake County now. Bless you both. Phillip sends love. We both do, lots of it.

Oh I'm believing, believing
Believing, that even when I'm gone
Maybe some lonesome picker will
Find some healing in this song
John Stewart
Thanks John. You were one of a dying breed!

John died yesterday in San Diego of a stroke. Buffy and the kids were at his side.
I'm believing, believing,
Believing that even when I'm gone,
Maybe some lonesome picker
Will find some healing in this song. RIP, Old Lonesome Picker.
