  • nossa alegria para bailar e de dia nossa alegria para bailar,,, parabens um portugues perfeito

  • Wow, thanks for the history lesson and the music. How much we don't know of what is happening under our very noses.

    Cheers.

  • @VishvajithN

    Agree. Thanks!!

  • Hi Goonwj, this is a great clip. The singers here are not from Batticaloa, but from Puttalam, they're officially called the Ceylon Kaffirs. They live in a village in Puttalam called Sirambiyadi. They have distinctly African features and hair, unlike the Batticaloa Burghers, who also sing Portuguese Creole songs. The photos here are from their performance at Barefoot, Colombo. They have now produced a CD of their music called "Kaffir Strella", meaning Kaffir Stars. Its available in Colombo.

  • @SLIngreesi

Hi, thanks for the comment. I know Kaffirs of Sirambiadiya who have been performing at Barefoot. Although I got the pictures mixed up by using Kaffirs photos on the video, this piece is by Batticaloa Burghers, not by Kaffirs. I have the original recording with me.

  • muito bunito. muito senti na corasang. palabras igual com palabras portugues na malaca. yo intinder muito claru. iam a malaca portuguese and was i moved and felt a some what natural connection with the melody ,lyrics, and temperament of the songs and the performers. we have avery similar music genre here among the portuguese community and it is called the Branyo where both our communities ,including the Burghers share the Jinkli Nona.there is a strong link ...Mike Singho..mikesingho@gmail.com

  • @ReshiKillerX

Thanks for the comment and valuable information. Sorry for the late acknowledgement!

  • !!!!!!!

  • nice nice!!

  • More Burgers in Sri Lanka than known. Genetic/genealogy project is revealing some Sinhalese or Tamil are actually Burger. 23andMe.com and Genbase.com have had some Sri Lankans take genetic tests. It costs somewhere from $250-450. Everyone that took this test so far has had some unexpected results......and it is revealing that some Sinhalese or Tamil are actually Burger. 23andMe.com and Genbase.com have had some Sri Lankans take genetic tests.

  • wish we could do more to help these people. sad to see this culture dying out

  • loads of thanks , jude . Am hearing about this beautiful community for the first time. Brought tears to my eyes. We need to help them feel that they belong. Will u be able to write to somebody big in SL and get their attention? Tks again for all the info.

  • muito bonito

    very beautiful

    :D

  • thanks so much... looks like you are a genuinely know lot about geography and history! thanks we want more of these!!

  • Thanks for the comment !!

  • You know what happen to these people shipped as slaves by the fucking Portugese, they lost their hair breeding with the locals. As a African that is the worst thing can happen. Only Africans have the most unique hair structure on this planet. I as a Singhale person have curly hair. When girls ask me what is the most beautiful part of my body I say my curly hair. That is what separates me from other Sri Lankans.

  • Would like to know where they live in sri lanka.

  • This is a another Sri Lankan community who is originated from Africa.Brought to Sri Lanka by Coloniala Rulers. They speak5th century Portugese language, which is not existent even in Portugal nowadays. They live in Batticaloa and Chillaw in Sri Lanka.

  • They have been treated equally with SL citizenship. These people are wonderful and brings colour to SL culture

  • awesome!!! :D

  • Thanks.

  • How many people in Sri lanka are aware of people of African origin living there?

Why was it never mentioned in history lessons at school?

  • Certainly, the current generation is not aware of this community. All the past SL govts (which also includes present) have denied responsibility for bringing them into the country, therefore they have been isolated and left to fend for themselves, although they were brought in around 1640. Thanks for the comment.

  • Do you know if these people hold any SL papers? Can they hold a SL passport?

There seems to be some parallels with the south indians brought by the british who were given SL citizenships but these people have been in SL longer.

  • Yep. they are born and bread in SL for generations with SL papers. But been isolated. Veddahs are more recognised than them, which is unfair.

  • elaa.....onna badu

  • Thank You !!

  • This is very nice...born and living in sri lanka for all these years through, I wasn't aware of this race. I never knew they excisted after portuguese people left. Im glad to know that we have a big cultural diversity and hoping to visit these people soon.

Thank you for making us aware about the parts of Sri Lanka I didn't know

  • Hi Roshani,

Thanks for the lovely comment !! My mission is to pass on the little knowledge that I have acquired over the years, to the younger generation. Glad to see it bearing fruit. Yes, we have a rich and a diverse culture. Its such a shame that these people are not given the place that they truly deserve.

If time permits, pl. see my other videos. I invite you to subscribe to my channel and your valuable comments are always appreciated.

  • cool

  • hi it is cool

  • Very nice but very andry about Portugees Pirates.cauze Portugees made these people cultureles and Homeless people. These are desedents of Mozambique.

Sri Lanka should take legal action against portugal

  • Thanks for the comment. Agree in principle. But it happened cneturies ago. They are now Sri Lankans. But many Sri Lankan Governments wash their hands off claiming that they are not responsible for bringing them into the country. They should treat them equally as any other Sri Lankan, since they are born and bred in Sri Lanka like you and me !!

  • yes, they must treat them as equally as we

  • Thank you !!

  • very cool

  • Thank You !!

  • People should preserve and promote this creole.. for this is an indication that cultural exchanged happened during colonial times. Here in the Philippines we're also having an effort of preserving chabacano, the only Spanish creole in Southeast Asia.

  • Fully agree with you. Unfortunately at state level, no effort has been made to preserve it. From some of the comments I see that people are learning about this community for the first time. It is my humble effort to pass this knowledge on to the younger generation.

    Thanks for the comment !!

  • I have been to Mozambique and they do speak Portugees and their own dialogue. Afro Indo mix people can be find in Suriname. I have good kafri friends from Suriname. SL must do take care of these lovely people.

  • It is great to introduce this type of rare entertainment by a 'forgotten community' in Sri Lanka. We will not forget you all since you are part of us.

  • Thanks for the comment. Agree, they should never be forgotten !!

  • HI! its very nice!!! I would like to see the lyrics of this music. Can you post the lyrics?

  • Hi,

  • Thank you Vidhura. You probably might remember that this is the original tune of CT's 'Meewadayaki Jeevithe'.

  • Hats off to this Portuguese Creole community for preserving these great melodies.....it is insane to call them "The Forgotten Community".....

.....Thanks a million for sharing this gem..!!

  • Thanks Aruna !!

They have so much talent and their community is gradually disappearing and now down to about 2000 people. Unfortunately, govt won't help them claiming that we are not responsible for bringing them into Ceylon.

I really hope that someone takes an interest and help preserve their community, music and the culture.

I have a few more, will upload when time permits. Thanks again.

    Jude

  • muito bom
