I respect Walt and his idea, but this would never have worked, and at their time, with their technology, it would probably have been of bad qualitiy and outdated quickly by our technology. Besides that, the cost would have been ENORMOUS. They already paid enough for the land. The land + EPCOT, would have been so depressing and the project would probably never have been finished. In turn Walt would become depressed / stressed and lose his imagination. I think Walt should never have felt that way.
@PandaPurpleify I disagree with you. He was making lots of money with movies and disneyland the land he bought was so big that what he paid was REALLY cheap and everyone wanted to support on this project then but when he died the people that were then the disney chiefs said they didnt want to take care of a city so they bailed but money was never a problem for disney and he had many time suffered with little money and always came successful in a way after and he would never lose his imagination.
Even though this sounds AMAZING!!!!! have my doubts still, it just seemed way too good to be true. It'd still might've been cool to have been created, but I think this would've never worked out.
similar to Andrew Ryan's Idea of the city of Rapture in Bioshock; is it just me; or did the people who made Bioshock just made an evil version of Walt Disney for Andrew Ryan. I mean Ryan looks and sounds exactly like Disney. And had a similar idea- to build an experimental communitee- the difference- Ryans dream got realized, Disney's didn't.
i feel like he didn't think about social divide. Wouldn't the rich want larger, more grand homes and private transportation that was not offered free to the masses? And what about crime? This seems too idealistic to actually work. If only it were completed..
@Robob710 This is pretty much how I feel about it. It could really have been something if he'd been able to see it through, but I guess we'll never know now. Not like there are loads of multi-billionaires with Walt's vision and work ethic around willing to invest in something like this.
While I think it is innovative and a very mind blowing project, I don't think that EPCOT as conceived would have been that great. First, imagine the constant need of remodelations that epcot would need to have in order for (the houses buildings etc) to remain modern...it would be outdated very quickly. Also, the topography in Florida (marshy and sandy) would not have allowed for the 3 transportation underground levels that Disney had in mind. Lastly, the dome for climate control seems a bit odd.
This is incredible. Have any of you been here to vegas to see CityCenter? the Building right in the middle of EPCOT look VERY similar to the Aria Hotel and Funny enough..@ 13:30 they say "a cosmopolitan hotel" and show a building pretty close to the Cosmopolitan hotel in the CityCenter.
If im crazy, tell me. Its 2:30 in the morning and my mind is blown.
WED was the original name for Walt Disney Imagineering. They changed it, because people kept mistaking them for wedding caterers. I wish this Epcot was built.
imagine if that EPCOT was built I bet if it was made more people would have been more innovated with technology and we would have ALOT more technology today like flying cars, more high speed trains in US, future like cities by now already today the only advances are just smartphones, HD tv, blurays, more computers, social networking etc. but nothing really futuristic when you take a look outside *sigh guess we'll have to wait LONGER to live very future like
For those who keep saying that "this'll never happen" or "this idea died with Walt", you should check out The Venus Project.
It's an organization striving not just for future "city systems" (like Epcot) but a total elimination of our present monetary economy, replacing it with a utopian resource-based economy (i.e. everything will be free & available thanks to future Nanotechnology and AI) without having to pay for it. Money will be obsolete.
Every time I see this video it makes me think about what could've happened if he didn't die from lung cancer and how cool it would've been if EPCOT was actually built. Now Walt Disney world seems unfinished to me after seeing this and it is sad this idea will never happen.
We will never know the wonders we would have seen come from Walt had he lived even 15 more years. We can thank the big tobacco companies for cheating us out of EPCOT and whatever other wonders Walt would have come up with had he lived a normal lifespan not cut short by chain smoking.
RIP Walt. The world could sure use someone of your genius now.
@SmileyV07 - I'm glad you like the Disney animation since Walt's death. I personally don't. I don't feel that the animation is of as good a quality as the earlier films. But i am biased. Fred Moore was an animator on many of the earlier films. He is also my grandmothers cousin. So the films Fred worked on have always been special to me. I am also a Disney...er....Freak? :D
@tikigirl the movies between the Little Mermaid and Tarzan are considered the "Disney Renaissance" which have the feel of the movies that Walt had a hand in. but it seems the movies between "Home on the Range and Bolt are rather lacluster. However it feels like they are making a comeback when Princess and the Frog came out. It's like a roller coaster. quality goes up, then goes back down and comes back up =P
@tikigirl If I had a relative that was an animator, I'd feel the same way. However, if Walt had access to today's tech, his cartoons would look a lot different. He always did the absolute best with what he had to work with.
Your are correct. But the Disney animators did work that is better than todays animation without todays tech.
Take a good look at Snow White sometime. The body movements of the character Snow White are so good they look rotoscoped. But they aren't. The animators were just that good. Attention to detail.
sad this Epcot never got to be built but a sort of replacement of this is Celebration Florida which is a town between Disney world and Kissimmee which is a modern community (nothing like the one Walt envisioned) the buildings and streets are like a typical town(think desperate housewives) that was built, owned, and operated by Disney
but it wouldve been so cool if this EPCOT community was built
I have always wondered what Walt Disney would think of Disney world since they did not build His EPCOT. I do think he would love it, the joy that it brings to families is everything that he could have ever dreamed of.
Did you know one of Walt's teachers told him he didn't have enough of an imagination? That itself proves never to let people let you down. Walt was a genius, I am now waiting for someone like this man to walk this earth again. I pity the Disney these days, just a bunch of Pop star singing crap, back when Walt was alive, the Disney company cared about their films, and the films actually had a moral. e.g. The Lion King. RIP.
@legomation24 Walt Disney died in 1966. The Lion King is from 1994. A long time after Walt's death. But I agree. The films made while Walt was alive were the best Disney ever did.
@tikigirl omg i friggin hate when people say like there hasnt been good disney films like aladdin, little mermaid, lion king, etc because Walt died when he actually died way before those films were even made most of those films I listed are under the Disney Renaissance which was in the 90s and films made when Walt was alive(which he also made himself) were Snow White, Pinocchio, Cinderella, etc.
@legomation24 - Walt actually CREATED new media(mulit-plane technique, full length animated features, nature films, theme parks). Compare that to Iger today who is just co-opting social media and internet crap. God, I miss Walt Disney.
@legomation24 i miss walt,he was a nice guy and actually cared about families and family fun.now without him disney has gone greedy and corrupt.we need him back, god!we will give you justin bieber in return!

@VOLightPortal That's amusing you think dear uncle Walt can subliminally attack children in Disney films made 20 years after he died. He must be a powerful zombie.
Bloody capitalist indeed, he made lots of money and gave millions to charity and his parks make millions of children and adults very happy every single day. So what have you done for me lately?
@VOLightPortal No animators that were looking for a funny joke because lets face it animation is a long and drawn out process, wanted a little touch of them to be original in the film. This is what people in the software world called a "Easter Egg". And what does capitalism have anything to do with it? Walt would of made films for pennies on the dollar, he loved to create and draw, money was a by product of his passion.
walt disney was a genius? yeah he was, he's dead and still playing fools like you, the motherfucker was a satanic fool, all he ever really wanted to do was followout lucifer's plan to fuck up the world, and he basically did, havent you noticed how all the little girls today have been acting and dressing like sluts!? and they all wear disney brands and watch disney? fuck, you're all so blind!
@Martin316X have u ever boticedc thoase come out AFTER he got frozen he was not satanic but he was a jew hater. and how could stuff like bambi, fox and the hound, aladin, and such like have inspired whores?
@unave where is your proof on Jew hatter? Walt was many things a slave driver, a conservative, anti-communist and a union basher. But he was not anti-Semitic. The proof for this claim is only found in one book that is questionable at best and has been refuted by many people that worked inside the company. Also Walt is not frozen he was cremated and is entured at forrest lawn.
I think only some of Walt's ideas are portrayed in the EPCOT we all know and love. I dont think it covers the whole "city of the future" idea he had. If Walt was still alive I don't think he would be very pleased with the EPCOT we have today, because I dont think it captures his ideas. Even though I love today's EPCOT and wouldn't change a thing, I would have loved to see Walt's EPCOT.
its so sad :( walt truly was a genius. his plans and ideas for this experimental prototype community of tomorrow really was amazing. as a former community planning and development/ architecture major in college, i see so many little things that a lot of people dont see. its incredible. he truly thought of everything imaginable. and he actually cared about everything, arts, sciences, sports, and he showcases huge things to help buildup each one of those things. :'( walt u will forever be missed!
funny how the people mover was supposed to be used for moving people all around the city, and it only ended up being used as a small attraction at Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom. Walt was a pure genius. If anyone at Disney World was nearly as smart as him, maybe they would have built this city, and other citys around the world would have used those ideas.
I love seeing all of the old american cars everywhere, literally! Now America is filled with these foreign automobiles that don't hold any pride or outstanding significance to patriotism whatsoever. If Walt was still alive today, I'm sure he would have a heavy impact on American pride!
@TubbsLite i know i just saw that in the movie...too bad they didnt make epcot like this. i feel like in epcot the marvels of TODAY are showcased, not the dreams and possibilities of tomorrow.
@TubbsLite I'm SO glad I'm not the only one who thought this! My brother thought I was crazy when I told him, but it's very clear that this was the inspiration! But I was like- the way he was dressed, acted, the way he presented his project. Even kind of the project itself, but of course not really, was extremely similar!
Its so sad his dream was never realized the experimental prototype of tomorrow would have been amazing, although i do love the current epcot i would of much preferred this. It would have changed the world....
This is so interesting, these urban planning/ consumer utopian ideas were very innovative for it's time and died a fast death because none of these ideas solved the living problems they intended to address. It is like a cross between that 70's movie 'Logan's Run' and Disney's 'WALL-E'. Think of the Axion and "The People Mover" it is post modern Disney of today making a movie that lampoons Disney of yesteryear and the commercialist/ consumer modernist values it and the then society promoted.
Yea I could give you a whole summary of walt disney world in Florida and Tiny one of walt disney land in cali since I have only been to that park 3 times.
Actually, Walt DIDN't want Magic Kingdom at WDW to be like Disneyland, but the board wanted something they knew would be a proven success. Even after Walt's death, Roy tried to convince them once more, but had no luck.
Walt did want the MK B/C he wanted to remake the park but 10x better. When walt was at disneyland he saw a cowboy from adventureland in tomorowland. he felt that it ruined the illusion of magic so he came up W/ utilidors. They're tunnels under the MK used by employees to transfer from spot to spot. B/C floridas water table is so high the utilidors r built on sealevel nd the park is actually 15 feet above sea level. Next time u go to MK right before the train station you will notice a slant up.
I'm going to do this. I'm going to bring his plans to today, update them, and bring his vision to life. I will do it, as God as my witness, I will do it.
thank you for uploading this movie! i have been looking for this video of his plans for epcot ever since i watched a clip on it on the mickey magical express bus from MCO
god damn we should make it. MAKE IT! just because hes no longer with us, doesnt mean we shouldn't carry on his good will. We should deffinately make this, the best we can do.
We have the technology to have such cities, but the problem is resources. We need to develop technologies to produce the matter we need from the surplus matter we have. We we can turn carbon into any other form of matter, without it being radioactive we will enter into a era of true peace.
Imagine if it was built it would be so cool no traffic save on gas a green city. would be nice it like a utopia. if you were a kid you could catch the people mover to your friends house. If disney was alive and it work he should have been President of the USA
"A source of joy and inspiration for the whole world" It once was til the current mob started plastering everything with Disney characters and pulling out rides like Horizons and World of Motion
what amazes me is that this was his vision when there was very little technology, i would almost be scared of what walt would have dreamed of with the technology of today.
someone's gotta build a new city with a new concept like this.. the idea behind EPCOT is great, it's a shame no one else had the vision to continue it.
its funny when we were sitting in epcot I said they should make all of disney world indoor and walt was talking about it in this video. btw it poured rain the whole week we were there.
O.K. time changes things. When you get older new abilities well come your way. I was 13 in S. Carolina once and now I been around the world 4 times. Just do your schooling for now and it will come soon. Good Luck.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah, it became .. "such a beautiful city here" i love watching criminals run through my yard running from the police or the kids shooting off guns, more so than the deer and animals i used to see.. he did a great job.
The schools would've had some kind of Disney influence. Everywhere (except the churches) would've had a Disney influence. I bet you would probably hear elevator versions of Disney songs in the transportation lobby.
But I bet they would've also recieved free lifetime passes to Disney World. Sweet!
There is an town ( Celebrations) it was from disney and build on the disney property.
Disney had a big influence on the town but didn't exposed the people constantly to disney adverstisement but Disney.inc decide what happend there ( e.g. You got an penalty when you don't maintance your garden). An onther big problem was that altough celebration was design with good intentions the people stay people so there was also murdering, raping and violence something disney Inc didn't count on
Walt was a crazy, sometimes overly-domineering guy - but he was brilliant! Can u imagine if he'd lived another 10 years, what WDW would REALLY look like?
Can u imagine if he came back and saw what EPCOT had REALLY become?
Walt wanted to build his community in central Florida, part of which would have been underground. Florida is too close to sea level to displace all that land (the other parks, like Magic Kingdom, are built up with the dirt from the lakes & lagoons dug around them)and the idea had to be changed into a park that was dedicated to the people of the world and to what amazing things we were capable of in the future as people of Earth. Epcot was kept as the name as a tribute to Walt's ideas and dreams.
Walt wanted a park devoted to the future. look at epcot, look at every Disneyland around the world. Epcot had very good potential for being devoted to the future. i think they should build a hotel designed like the main bulding of his version of Epcot, and to have all the futuristic utilities. a park like the original EPCOT would make Walt proud. even tho Walt has passed, he never ceases to plan for Disney.
Where are the wealthy today? They are not working like Walt did to make the world better on their own!

I think Walt should never have felt that way.

walt disney was a genius? yeah he was, he's dead and still playing fools like you, the motherfucker was a satanic fool, all he ever really wanted to do was followout lucifer's plan to fuck up the world, and he basically did, havent you noticed how all the little girls today have been acting and dressing like sluts!? and they all wear disney brands and watch disney? fuck, you're all so blind!
Martin316X 1 year ago
@Martin316X have u ever boticedc thoase come out AFTER he got frozen he was not satanic but he was a jew hater. and how could stuff like bambi, fox and the hound, aladin, and such like have inspired whores?
unave 1 year ago
@unave where is your proof on Jew hatter? Walt was many things a slave driver, a conservative, anti-communist and a union basher. But he was not anti-Semitic. The proof for this claim is only found in one book that is questionable at best and has been refuted by many people that worked inside the company. Also Walt is not frozen he was cremated and is entured at forrest lawn.

@Martin316X and you base this on what?

If I can go back in time, I would LOVE to meet him and talk with him for hours unend!

funny how the people mover was supposed to be used for moving people all around the city, and it only ended up being used as a small attraction at Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom.

If you watch Iron Man 2, Tony's Father made a very very similar film. It almost alludes to this directly. He even has the mustache
TubbsLite 1 year ago 4
@TubbsLite i know i just saw that in the movie...too bad they didnt make epcot like this. i feel like in epcot the marvels of TODAY are showcased, not the dreams and possibilities of tomorrow.
gmenfan48 1 year ago
@TubbsLite I'm SO glad I'm not the only one who thought this! My brother thought I was crazy when I told him, but it's very clear that this was the inspiration! But I was like- the way he was dressed, acted, the way he presented his project. Even kind of the project itself, but of course not really, was extremely similar!
pureimagination4747 1 year ago

Actually, Walt DIDN't want Magic Kingdom at WDW to be like Disneyland, but the board wanted something they knew would be a proven success. Even after Walt's death, Roy tried to convince them once more, but had no luck.
stephenb407 2 years ago
Walt did want the MK B/C he wanted to remake the park but 10x better. When walt was at disneyland he saw a cowboy from adventureland in tomorowland. he felt that it ruined the illusion of magic so he came up W/ utilidors. They're tunnels under the MK used by employees to transfer from spot to spot. B/C floridas water table is so high the utilidors r built on sealevel nd the park is actually 15 feet above sea level. Next time u go to MK right before the train station you will notice a slant up.

We have the technology to have such cities, but the problem is resources. We need to develop technologies to produce the matter we need from the surplus matter we have. We we can turn carbon into any other form of matter, without it being radioactive we will enter into a era of true peace.

It sounded great- until they considered putting glass over it. The "green belt" is too relatively small to control smog levels in a covered city.

Imagine if it was built it would be so cool no traffic save on gas a green city. would be nice it like a utopia. if you were a kid you could catch the people mover to your friends house. If disney was alive and it work he should have been President of the USA

The schools would've had some kind of Disney influence. Everywhere (except the churches) would've had a Disney influence. I bet you would probably hear elevator versions of Disney songs in the transportation lobby.
But I bet they would've also recieved free lifetime passes to Disney World. Sweet!
palmercomm 3 years ago 2
There is an town ( Celebrations) it was from disney and build on the disney property.
Disney had a big influence on the town but didn't exposed the people constantly to disney adverstisement but Disney.inc decide what happend there ( e.g. You got an penalty when you don't maintance your garden). An onther big problem was that altough celebration was design with good intentions the people stay people so there was also murdering, raping and violence something disney Inc didn't count on

Great Vid.
I just finished "Hollywood's Dark Prince".
Walt was a crazy, sometimes overly-domineering guy - but he was brilliant! Can u imagine if he'd lived another 10 years, what WDW would REALLY look like?
Can u imagine if he came back and saw what EPCOT had REALLY become?
potsie1138 3 years ago 3
Walt wanted to build his community in central Florida, part of which would have been underground. Florida is too close to sea level to displace all that land (the other parks, like Magic Kingdom, are built up with the dirt from the lakes & lagoons dug around them)and the idea had to be changed into a park that was dedicated to the people of the world and to what amazing things we were capable of in the future as people of Earth. Epcot was kept as the name as a tribute to Walt's ideas and dreams.
MikeBishop 3 years ago 3
Epcot in Disney World is a beautifully crafted park. The design is brilliant, it's only second to the Animal Kingdom.
Ciette 3 years ago 3
Walt wanted a park devoted to the future. look at epcot, look at every Disneyland around the world. Epcot had very good potential for being devoted to the future. i think they should build a hotel designed like the main bulding of his version of Epcot, and to have all the futuristic utilities. a park like the original EPCOT would make Walt proud. even tho Walt has passed, he never ceases to plan for Disney.
redskinsfaniam2 3 years ago 3

Bert9327 3 years ago
with gas prices nowadays, this city concept is actually a good idea.

Looks like Epcot never turned out exactly what it was suppose to be which was an actual community. Today Its just a theme park.
